"Is there anything you need?" Jordan asked, facing his Luna.
"You know, I came to the pack recently, and I want to know about the situation here. How are things going? What should I do? I want to know about everything," she said.
Jordan looked at her and stroked his hair. He had work to do but seeing her confused expression made him reluctant to leave. "I will tell you briefly. The Moon Shadow Pack, our pack is one of many packs under the werewolf king. You have met him before," he said, and she nodded.
"Okay then, every pack had an Alpha, the one who is in charge of the pack. And besides the Alpha, there is the Luna. His mate," he explained.
"Mate?" she asked.
"It's like your soul mate or your other half," he responded.
"Did it mean I am the Alpha's mate?" she asked him once again.
"Mmm, it's not like that. Werewolves recognize their mate when they see them. We know naturally if she is the one," he explained, and she nodded.
She was fast learning and curious woman. He thought.
"Then, the Alpha didn't have a mate. That's why he accepted the marriage alliance. Right?" she asked,
Jordan shifted his gaze away from her. He patted his neck, "The Alpha had a mate, but she.. died," he said with a low voice.
She gaped at the sudden revelation and asked him what happened, but he preferred to stay silent.
After the previous Luna's death eight years ago, horrible things happened that changed his life completely. Thus, he didn't want to remember it at all.
Jordan sighed and excused himself, saying he had something to do. He exited the door and walked aimlessly, remembering the past, how the Alpha beheaded his father without batting an eye, how the others humiliated him for being a traitor's son, and the greatest joke that the same Alpha chose him as his beta.
He didn't know why the alpha took such a decision. His father's betrayal had nothing to do with him, but his reputation went to the ground.
He worked hard since young. His father praised him many times for his wittiness and told him he would surpass him. All the beautiful things faded with his father's corpse.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He saw his mate's name displayed on the screen, so he received the call.
She must have felt his troubled emotions through the mate bond, maybe she tried contacting him through the mind link, but he shut it down.
After a few words of reassuring her, he said, "Hon, why don't you visit the Luna? She seemed lost when I saw her a while ago. Explain to her about life in the pack," he said, remembering how he left urgently.
"But don't tire yourself," he declared, and she growled at him for his overprotective act, but he could not help. She and the child were the most important ones in his life.
After talking to Hannah, he smiled. But after he opened the mind link, the Alpha's indifferent voice welcomed him to erase that smile. He tucked the phone in his jeans pocket and rushed to the packhouse.
…
In the vampire kingdom, a man rested on the bed. His eyes were closed. The thick, white bandage wrapped around his chest, hands, and forehead. The specialist sat beside him, bandaging his right leg.
The door to his chamber opened, and someone got in, "How is he?" Valdo asked, and the specialist replied, "His conditions were stable." he stood, seized his equipment and exited the room.
Valdo sat beside the bed, looking at the injured man. "I shouldn't have talked to you," he murmured. Miranda wrote to him secretly days ago. Who thought he would leave his post, going to that place and putting himself in danger?
The injured man's hand moved, his eyelashes fluttered and attempted to sit, groaning in pain.
"What are you doing?" Valdo said, noticing the man's movements.
"I need to go. She is in danger," the man said as he pushed his leg to the floor.
"What are you talking about? Which danger are you referring to?" Valdo asked. "How did you get such an injury?" he asked once again. The man worked for him for years. He used to do many risky jobs, but never did he perceive severe wounds.
The man stood up, but his legs wobbled. He crouched, sucking a deep breath and clenching his hands hard on the bedsheet.
"Don't move. Your wounds haven't healed yet," said Valdo sternly.
"But, I need to save her," the man stated in a weak voice.
This man didn't consider his injury, and boldly he was going to save someone! Valdo thought.
"She isn't in our territory. She is now under the werewolves' protection. They will not harm her or allow someone to do so," he answered the man who may forget the peace treaty between the two races.
Targeting the 'princess' wasn't a good option unless they wanted to stir trouble.
"She was in danger last night. If I didn't intervene, she might be dead by now. What protection are you talking about? It was clear from yesterday's incident that she isn't safe there!" he told Valdo, fisting his hands. If he was late, then she...
Valdo said, "I will have someone to check on her. You need to rest." The man shook his head. "Do you want to die? You want to go thousands of miles away while you can't take two steps successive."
The man listened to him and sat on the bed.
"Now tell me, any news on Arius's movement?" Valdo asked.
Since the day the previous queen died, he monitored Arius. He found nothing wrong. But last year, he went to a research centre a lot.
The elimination of one of the six dukes who refused his reign to the core shocked him. No rulers had done anything similar. Arius flung one enormous problem away. Banning the Lysio's would cause the Sanders and Kantos families to be in a disadvantaged state as they lack the influence Dalimar Lysio had as the leader of the second grand duchy.
"I tried infiltrating the institute, but there are many guards in the place."
Valdo nodded his head. He should know what Arius was planning to do.
