Chapter 5 - ch 5 my annoying days

The southern border of the goblin village is a pretty hard-to-handle position. It is a pretty impractical defense, if I say so.

The goblin village is like a small plateau with the mountains up to the north and grasslands down to the south.

The major problem in the southern fields is the dens in those areas. It seems dens are the location where most of the beasts that populate the grasslands are created. There are tons of these dens in the place.

Normally the beasts of each den tend to be busy fighting each other. It looks like l came in at the wrong time. They are entering something known as the hunting season. All the dens are working in overdrive producing a ton of monsters and simply put the grasslands are too small for all the monsters that are fighting in the grasslands. So they all tend to escape into the surrounding region and the inhospitable environment of the mountains does little to make them not come to this place.

That means that a very large number of beasts are going to attack the southern walls and it is supposed to be my duty to help in whatever manner that I can.

Right now I am traveling to that area with the goblin mage. She is a skilled elemental mage, I will give her that much. I saw her combining earth magic and wind magic to create a platform for us to travel on.

It is still pretty rudimentary, but it is a pretty impressive sight. Elemental combination tends to be very complex in any world. Even I have yet to figure it out and I consider myself to be something of a genius in mana manipulations. Then again, I was never really allowed any chance to settle on a world to hone my skills. The longest I Have been in a single world has been two years, if you do not consider my birth world, which did not have any mana.

Anyway, this leaves me with a lot to worry about. I don't know exactly what I am supposed to be doing here and just how dangerous it is going to be. Well, at the very least the goblin mage can't take over in that period. Most of the Southern border has been made into a green zone by the elder.

I don't understand the logic of the elder, but he gave up most of the southern walls to me and too easy at that, and that leaves me very worried. It simply does not make sense that a man would be so willing to give up on his freedom so easily. Well, I am not the person that should speak about giving up freedoms. It is not like a person like me likes to conquer a world.

Now there is no real need to dig up about my past, which is a messy matter to even start with.

Anyway, where in hell is that goblin that is supposed to be inside. I have yet to feel him act up or speak something up till now. He is one of the chatty ones. He must still be sleeping, even I can tell that this goblin's body is very weak. Anyway, I have more pressing things to deal with than a fragile mage. I can see why he would need me.

let's engage in some conversation with the goblin mage. She still treats me with a lot of suspicion, then again the mages normally do not tend to be very trusting folks.

Me - how will you even holding back such a large number of enemies. You would need a powerful formation to deal with the number of beasts that goblin knight had told me about.

Goblin mage - we have a formation, which allows us to deal with most of the weaker ones, but against the stronger ones, we need to use our troops to deal with them. Using the formation would be a waste of time and energy for them.

Me - what is the formation that you are using and the main element that you are using with the formation. Do you have a method to repair any damage done to the formation?

Goblin mage -well, the formation mainly has a fire element, and to repair the damage done to the formation, we have a squad of formation masters to deal with this damage done to the formation.

Me - so, what is going to be my duty in this very mess. I don't think I have too much power to deal with the beasts that you consider strong.

Goblin mage -well we have to deal with the clean-up duty. When the number of weak monsters is not enough to start the formation. Normally we have a squad of nameless ones to do that job, but with their strength, the losses usually are pretty high. I would like for you to change that situation.

Me - so you give me the nameless ones to command. I must say that you trust me too much. To think you are allowing me to command anything.

Shit, why does she even want me to lead a troop. It is in a situation like this I want to curse. I do not like to lead troops into the battle. I have always been more of an advisor in situations like this, laying out the options for the actual leader of the group and see him make the choices.

Goblin mage - I don't like this idea very much myself but you have our leader in there with you and anyways I am only giving you command of a single troop. It will be about ten nameless ones.

Me - that is okay too. I can grow my strength in that way.

Goblin mage - that is the goal. You can't protect the elder if you are too fragile. I believe you need to be at least a second step being for the master to use a single strike at his full power and not to have your body collapse.

Me - so when shall we reach the southern walls. I am eager to meet the soldiers that shall be working for me in the future. ( not really, but no need to let the other side know that. )

Goblin mage - we have a couple of days to reach this spot. Until then, I suggest that you work on getting familiar with that sword of yours. I can't have you accidentally decapitating any of our soldiers, even the nameless ones.

There she goes insulting me again. I have no idea what she hopes to achieve by doing so. I just might be the most powerful ally that elder is going to be. I don't understand people sometimes.

Me - anyway, what is the elder even doing. I haven't felt his presence in my body since yesterday. It is almost like he is not even there.

Goblin mage - the elder is a mighty man indeed but his strength comes with great cost. Every time that he uses his mana, he ends up sleeping for a very long period and he seems to have used a lot of it entering you. Such a weakness is the reason we don't want him on the battlefield and why he created an abomination like you.

Me - he seemed very active to me yesterday, kept chattering and taking over my body to speak with you people and it is not like he had used a lot of mana yesterday.

Goblin mage - I don't know exactly how the body of the elder works. He is a fourth step being. We have no chance of understanding his power. He is too profound for beings like us.

Me - what the hell does that even mean. Even your elder promised to me that he would make me into a third step being.

Goblin mage - well, you should have a basic idea about the evolution system.

Me - yes, I do have a brief idea about how it works, but I am not an expert particularly.

Goblin mage - well, the evolution system of this world is relatively more unique compared to that of the other worlds. Evolution normally works by us absorbing the life force of our victims and then using it to make our bodies more powerful. Each evolution changes the very nature of our bodies, but this kind of evolution also tends to destabilize our bodies.

That means that we can only have five evolutions before our bodies destabilize and we will explode into pieces in the best case or become an abomination in the worst case.

Me - I know that much, but I did not know that there was a limit of five evolutions. I know of beings that have reached at the very least a hundred evolutions.

Goblin mage - well, other beings in other worlds do not have such a limitation as far as I know. It is something unique to our world. Anyway, after every five evolutions, we have to go through something known as rebirth and we gain the ability to undergo five more evolutions. A being that has undergone one rebirth is considered as a first step being and a being with two rebirths is considered to be a second step being.

Me - okay, I understand. Would you mind explaining how this rebirth works exactly?

Goblin mage - do you want me to stop right now and explain it to you. I have a battlefield to go to and it is not like this knowledge will be of any use to you, at least not now.

Me - fine I will shut up right now. I will be entering into meditation right now. Inform me when we reach the southern borders.

The goblin in front of me just waves her hands, which I take to be a yes.

Anyway, I sit down and take a deep breath, feeling the mana in the air as the world around me fades away.

Meditation is a necessity for being like me and honestly, most living things end up in a non - living body. Our souls are like any organ of our body, even it needs it rest.

With an organic body, all you need to do is sleep and everything is fine, your souls get rested and everything is fine.

With an inorganic body or if you are undead, this tends to be a cause of annoyance. An undead does not need to rest, but if an undead were to stay awake forever sooner or later he will begin to feel the side effects.

He will find that mana is nearly impossible to control, even the one that is present in his own body.

If even more time were to pass, he would lose control over any mana that he has and once he does lose control of the mana in his body, he is nothing more than a glorified firecracker. There are creepier side effects, one which I would rather not talk about. I have no wish to spoil my mood.

As a world hopper, I have been in many bodies that do not need any sleep, so I have to learn something like meditation, or I will end up dead if I were to enter the wrong body.

Anyway, I am entering into meditation, which means that I will not be able to maintain my recordings for too long.

(After a couple of days)

I have finally reached the southern walls, well it is not as impressive as I thought that it would look, but it is a very practical construction.

The walls are quite tall, about twice my size I believe. For the goblins, this wall must be a behemoth.

Well, goblin mage has already left, forcing me to sit in a particular spot. It is annoying but I must agree that it is better that I don't roam. it looks like the elder has already woken up.

Me - how are you feeling elder, tired?

Elder bone - well, young one. I can call you young one right.

Me - combining all the worlds that I have been in, I think that my present age should cross a hundred years.

Elder bone - then it is fine, I am almost three hundred years old already.

Me - okay, well I might need your help then. I am not too good at leading troops and you must have a decent understanding of strategies. I need you to train me in that matter or at the very least make sure that I don't screw it up too much.

Elder bone - let me see, It is a green zone and I am very tired. I might end up in a long sleep. I will try to wake up once in a while though. Don't expect anything from me.
