Chapter 6 - Mortal Core

With the proof, the receptionist didn't say anything as Wolfy followed us toward the teleporter portal where only authorized people can use it.

This device is commonly used by wealthy people due to its convenience for traveling in a big mansion.

"I never expected that going to the library would be so troublesome," Ariel murmured as we stepped out of the portal.

The ambiance here is like being in another world where no harm could happen to us. Many people were reading in silence while others were going through bookshelves.

"Aren't you happy that we get to read any books without spending anything for an unlimited amount of time?"

Shrugging her shoulders, she replied, "Well, it's just money. Paying or not, that's fine by me, and you know very well how much I hate this place. The only thing good is that we are allowed to bring our little cute puppy along."

"You're right."

Thinking about it, although Fynn has no interest in tracking our location, can I trust him?

While this would be dangerous if he has some malicious intentions, removing the mark would show that I don't trust him enough and will therefore make us lose an important ally...

According to the memory of my past life, keeping powerful friends at your side is never a bad thing.

"Let's go to the Magic section," I said.

Obviously, I haven't gone through so much trouble just for the pleasure of reading but actually to build up my limited knowledge. There weren't many things I could do with my three-year-old body other than coming here.

It took us around 10 minutes to get there so much this place is huge. They must have hired a space-time mage to build this dimensional pocket.

"What do you want to read?" Ariel relaxed on the small couch with Wolfy.

I passed Ariel a book and sat beside her. "This one. Remember Wolfy's previous owner? The old man said he only has a mortal core which I don't know what that means."

"Well, you could have simply asked me. People possessing a mortal core represent 95% of the world's population. You can just consider them as ordinary humans who can't protect themselves," Ariel explained before opening the book. "Now in more detail, the reason why a mortal core is worthless is that it is only equipped with an input. Like others, it can absorb the mana around the world, however, without an output, it is impossible to use magic."

Everything makes sense. That's why knights are so respected and envied by everyone.

I have always wondered why some people decided to be a farmer rather than becoming a knight and earning lots of money.

"Then, are we superior to them?"

Without hesitation, Ariel replied with a smile, "Of course, isn't it obvious? Even the strongest of them can't even beat a toddler who has just learned to use magic. You should be proud of our family since only descendants of magic users have a high chance of awakening something else other than a mortal core.

"Yet, keep in mind that this is no reason to look down on ordinary people. They are humans, just like us, but unlucky ones."

"Wolfy might be weak but I won't let anyone hurt him," I said.

"That's the idea." Ariel nodded

While she continues reading for me, I listened to her voice with great interest. Ariel must have enjoyed it too since she didn't complain once. During the whole time, Wolfy took a nap on her lap.

~~~
Today, we are supposed to go to Fynn's mansion but Ariel went to her Academy, which means that I have to go there alone.
"Levi, I can't accompany you any further. School is waiting for me. See you later!" Ariel said as she rushed away.
Whatever... It wouldn't make much difference if she came with me or not.
"Hey, kid. What are you doing alone here?" An armored guard stood in front of the fence.
"I am here to see Ligh."
After showing him the mark on my hand, his demeanor became much more respectful. "Welcome esteemed guest, I beg your clemency for my rude attitude earlier."
This is quite convenient...
While walking, I took a look at the natural scenery.
A pity that my parents prefer living in a small house rather than a big mansion.
Even Wolfy agrees with me, just take a look at his wagging tail. He only has one desire and that is to explore this gigantic place!
