Chapter 39 - 39

Saera's eyes widened in sudden realization, and she raised her hand for the man to pause. Jin had opted not to tell her the details in his retelling of these events, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to know. After a moment of quiet deliberation, however, she let her hand fall, and nodded for the man to continue.

"Ah, well, the specifics aren't proper to tell a lady, but some of us ended up being badly hurt by the soldiers. Lots of beatings, I know my own ribs were sore for days."

"What happened to that man, the one who tried to take rations?" This was the event that had changed the way Jin worked entirely. Saera wanted to know.

"They removed the fingers, my lady, right beneath the knuckles, and gave the rest of us a thrashing."

Saera closed her eyes as bile rose in her throat and sat for a moment until she'd regained her composure. Her stomach twisted uncomfortably as the image flashed against her eyelids. She had never been very tolerant of violence.
