Chapter 42 - Kavan grew a backbone

Sabrina stood with Kavan at the hospital corridor, racking their brains on who else they could get as a witness to their fake marriage registration. Kavan sent a few messages and managed to get one old school friend - Ace - who hated his family members, to agree.

Kavan's mother had looked down on Ace because of his poor family background and insisted that Kavan do not remain friends with him. Of course Kavan had secretly remained friends with Ace, sometimes going for drinks with him. They have continued to stay in touch after graduating and throughout their college years. However, he has not seen Ace since he ran off to Penang to hide from his family. The moment Kavan sent him a message, Ace called back.

"Finally you made an appearance! I thought you had eloped with some karaoke singer and is now struggling to make ends meet with three babies to support," Ace said the moment Kavan picked up.

"Well, I am back and I need your help," Kavan said.

"I will need to be paid…at least a few rounds of drinks on you buddy," Ace said.

Kavan agreed and told him that he will fill him in with the details later that night. He agreed to meet Ace for drinks. He then turned to Sabrina.

"I've got one, he will be a stellar witness but we need another one, my family doesn't like Ace either," he told her.

"And I wonder why…" Sabrina replied sarcastically. His family is turning out to be such snobbish assholes, she is having second thoughts to be even remotely related to them.

"You know, I am beginning to wonder if all this fuss is worth the trouble, this whole drama is really getting out of hand," she told him.

She is tired of all this drama. She has to stay hidden from her own dragon clan, all because of Kavan. She has to come up with plans on how to get Dashen to divorce her, also for Kavan. Now, they have to fake a marriage AND get fake witnesses, for her to be with Kavan.

Is it worth all this trouble? Is Kavan worth all this?

"What do you mean Sab?" Kavan asked, worried.

"I mean, I am on the run from my clan elders because of you, because I refused to heed them and stayed with you, I lost my powers temporarily and now I have to hide my powers and my aura to prevent them from finding me, if that's not enough, we have to fake get married and get fake witnesses to appease your annoying, demanding snobbish asshole family," she blurted out.

She is mentally drained from all these nonsense. Everything is piling up and she could barely breathe. For a fleeting moment, she wished she had never met Kavan. Life was simpler when she was just Dashen and Meera's free babysitter. At least the kids are manageable.

She rubbed her temples. She is beyond exhausted with all these drama. This is much worse than some stupid TV family drama.

"I just can't…" she walked away. She needed to clear her mind. She noticed Kavan's mother and Reesha looking at them. His mother is smirking and so is Reesha. Well, that fake little minx can have Kavan. She is about done with all this. She walked out of the hospital and stood outside, staring up at the skies.

"Well, there you have it destiny or fate or whatever you call it, looks like we are not meant to be after all!" she muttered to the vast expanse of blue skies. Kavan came running after her. He grabbed her arm.

"Sabrina! You don't mean that! Not after all that we went through," he said. Worry creased his brows. The fear of losing her was written all over his face.

"You mean after all that I went through…you never fought for us, it was always me doing the fighting and you know what? I am tired of all this shit. I am tired of being the one fighting for us while you follow along and barely make an effort," she shot back at him.

He hangs his head at her words. He rubbed his nape and then looked up at her, tears glinting in his eyes.

"I am sorry if you feel this way," he said. Her eyes widened. She was right. He is giving up on them. He doesn't have the guts to fight for them!

Kavan swiped the tears away from his eyes. He grabbed both her arms and stared at her, a sudden glimmer of determination glinting in his eyes.

"You know what? You are right. It is time I stand up to my family," he said. He raised his chin. "I will go in there and tell them to fuck off and then we can go back to Penang, living our lives as we did before this, without the Chokshi family, without their stupid fortune!" he said.

He kissed her. "Wait for me here," he said. Then he marched back inside, his shoulders squared, his back straight. Sabrina was speechless. This is another side of Kavan she has not seen before. She stood there awestruck for a few moments before she realised that someone was staring at her.

She looked up at the stranger. A man in a white coat. Possibly a doctor in the hospital. She looked at him and stared back. She is not one to be easily intimidated. The doctor came towards her and then he broke into a wide grin.

"I was right! Boy, am I glad to meet one of us!" he said, reaching out to hug her. She jumped back from him and eyed him suspiciously. Is he an escaped lunatic? Why is he hugging her?

"You're from sea jade isn't it? I am one of Heaven's Descent," the lunatic told her.

She gasped.

"You mean?" she asked, unsure if she had heard him right.

He nodded, grinning at her happily. As if he had met his long lost friend.

The lunatic, who is not a lunatic actually, is rather handsome with thick brown hair tied neatly behind his nape, large friendly green eyes and a large built, as if he goes to the gym. He is much larger, more well built than Kavan, that's for sure.

"I am so glad to meet you, it's not easy to bump into one of us among the sea of mortals we have to live among," the handsome doctor said.
