Chereads / My Ability is…Mist? / Chapter 19 - Role Reversal

Chapter 19 - Role Reversal

I left the arena and decided to go walk back to the dorm instead of teleporting, I needed to think about all that had happed that day. First I got my beast weapon, then a crazy offer from Pain, and then a freaking wendigo appeared. I shuddered at the memory of it watching me in the trees. On top of everything, I happened to stumble upon an 'Evolution Orb' that gave me amazing new abilities. If that weren't enough I also got an S rank sword, a butt load of beast cores, a small vile of some kind of liquid and a journal.

I examined my gifts from the leech skill, it was extremely overpowered. Every single beast that was killed inside my mist veil had given me an attribute. With everything that I had gained, it was easy to see why my luck was so high. But thinking about the contents of the duffel bag, I needed to know the origins of the orb. Hopefully the author of the journal would have some answers for me. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to read it until I got back to the dorm because the sun was starting to set.

I continued to walk while deep in thought, how would I be able to explain my jump in power to everyone? I had a literal mound of beast cores but no plausible way to explain how I had attained them, not to mention my sword. I would need some place quiet to train and absorb the cores as well as read the journal.

As much as I wanted to tell my friends about my adventure, I couldn't. The more I talked about it meant that there was an even bigger chance that the academy would find out. The only option was to keep a low profile and act as if nothing had happened.

I was still very deep in thought when my instincts screamed at me to pay attention to my surroundings. I calmed my mind and focused as I could indeed feel the gaze of a hostile being lurking nearby. Could I have really attracted the attention of the assassin just by walking alone? This was too perfect, a chance to play with my new skills without anyone watching.

"Hey, loser." I heard a familiar voice call out from the dark.

I knew that voice, it belonged to a bully that i had long forgotten about, Aldin. But what was he doing here? Could it be that he was the assassin of the H rank newbies? It certainly made sense with the way he reacted to seeing anyone that he deemed weak. I prepared myself for a hard fight with an S rank individual.

"Why are you out here so late, don't you know someone is going around killing off fragile flowers like you? Aldin taunted as he stepped into the light provided by a street lamp. He looked like he was going to train somewhere. He wore a light set of black armor on his upper body, a simple pair of gray sweatpants and running shoes.

"So you're the H rank assassin Aldin? Honestly I expected as much." I said in a bored tone. Before I could continue though, he had appeared right in front of me. The speed was incredible even with my new strength, I couldn't hope to match his speed.

"Don't you think that if I was running around killing garbage, I would have done it already?" Aldin said, his face curved into a smile.

"S-so it isn't yo-you then?" I was so thrown off by his power that I was stammering to form a sentence, how could a person get to be so strong?

Leaning in closer until we were almost touching noses, he said "No it isn't me, I would never waste my time terrorizing people smaller than myself. I have training to get to and that's all you get to know."

He then spun around, and the black armor started to shrink from his chest back down to his hands before disappearing entirely. The armor wasn't armor at all, it was his ability. Incredible, in only six months he had trained his ability to grow that much, he really was deserving of S rank despite his attitude.

I was actually quite relieved to find out that Aldin wasn't the killer, if he were I probably wouldn't win. But this drew me to another point, what was I going to so if the killer was as skilled as Aldin?

I immediately threw all of my previous worries to the side, what I needed to do was absorb cores. Even with my evolution I was still H rank in the eyes of the academy and my abilities were still level one according to the display. I couldn't risk the chance that the killer could out class me, even worse I couldn't risk one of my friends dying due to my over confidence.

I was putting in the code to my dorm in my teleportation watch when I sensed another presence nearby. It was familiar and I couldn't tell if it was malicious or not.

"Hey Jake!" It was Clark Green, the prefect for H dorm, I couldn't be more happy to see this guy.

"Hey, Clark I was just about to head to the dorm, I know it's late but I was having a talk with Pain." I explained not knowing if I was going to be grilled by my upper class men.

He looked at me with understanding and approached, I noticed that he was carrying a katana on his waist.

"Woah, you sure are packing tonight, is everything okay?" I asked genuinely concerned.

"Yeah, everything is fine, but I'm tired of this H rank assassin bullshit! I've decided to take him out myself." Clark declared.

He sounded so full of confidence and passion, I knew that I could put my life into his hands.

"Actually, I was going ti do the same thing tonight with my friends, it's gone on long enough." I told him.

He appeared to be thinking about something as he rocked on his heels for a moment.

"Hey that ability of yours blinds your enemies right? He asked suddenly.

"Well yes, it actually blinds my enemies and allies alike." I answered, was he going to ask me to join him?

"This is good, we need an ability like that. You know I heard some kids in G rank say that they saw someone running around in a dark cloak on the outskirts of the campus. Would you want to come and investigate this mysterious person with me? I could use the backup." He finished in a huff, practically begging.

"Of course!" I answered ecstatic that a senior wanted my help.

"Okay, lets get going then, you aren't allowed access to the coordinates yet so we will have to travel on foot." Clark said before turning to run off into the darkness.
