Chereads / My Ability is…Mist? / Chapter 24 - Hunger Pains

Chapter 24 - Hunger Pains

(Author's Note- I am thinking of doing either a time skip or simply changing the ages of my characters entirely. I want to write about more mature themes but would feel uncomfortable talking about 14 year old kids that way. I will decide which to do by the time the next chapter releases, thank you for understanding.)

"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?" Sila shouted, staring at my system interface. She tried to poke it but her hand went straight through. I had hoped that the demon queen would have some kind of knowledge involving the system, but it seemed that my hopes were for naught.

"I combed through every single cell in your body, I know that your main ability is to manipulate mist as well as a few secondary skills, but there is nothing to suggest…whatever that is!"

I just stared at her with a smirk, I finally had some information that she did not possess. My small victory was short lived however, as I was met with a smack that sent me to the floor.

"Explain this instant, little hu- Jake." Sila said, crossing her arms.

"It's only my system, it suddenly appeared when I touched the evolution orb." I said, rubbing my still stinging face.

"I know about the ability orb, but what the hell is an evolution orb? Would you happen to have it with you?" She asked.

In response, I pulled the orb out of my inventory and held it up for her to examine. She eyed the orb with a genuine fascination, asking me to turn it over and run my fingertips over every inch of it so that she could experience the touch of it. In the end, she told me to put it away and show her all that my system could do. I showed her all of the functions that had been unlocked so far and Sila meticulously looked at every detail, commenting on how much of a wonder it was.

I noticed that my stats had changed yet again, most likely due to Sila reconstructing my body.

So it seemed that Sila had been telling the truth in that I had been turned into something other than human. I was now a halfling, one step from becoming a vampire. While not a fan of the idea, it appeared that draining someone was the only way to progress. Also, I was not okay with the countdown also being highlighted in the stats. My guess was that if the timer hit zero before I drained somebody, I would die.

Also, all of my attributes had been increased to their current level cap, all except for luck anyway. My health however, seemed to have gone down. Sila's modification of my body had to be the reason behind that. I felt lighter, stronger and more agile than ever now, and it was all thanks to her.

"Wow, I have never seen anything as complex as this system thing of yours, it has even taken our new bond into account." Sila was still in awe of the system.

"My only concern is that my hp went from five-hundred to only one hundred," I said, thinking out loud.

Sila gave a slight nod as she reached a conclusion in her head, "I believe I am the cause for that, you are much more durable than before, taking even one point away would require some real effort. Maybe your new physique required a new standard in hp measurement. I would like to meet the creator of those orbs and pick their brain about this system, it has peaked my curiosity".

"Yeah, I was just as shocked as you when it happened. In fact, I have had this system for all of one day. Also, I don't know why, but I suspect that it was a weapon meant for humanity to be able to fight back." I said, explaining my situation to her.

"Well, actually, it has been a few months since the night we met."

"WHAT?!"

I was surprised to say the least, on the surface, it made sense that changing someone on the cellular level would take some time. Although I understood that fact, I became worried as to the location of my friends.

I headed out to find them at once, walking into the main building for H Dorm. I noticed that the Sun was glaring through the windows in long, scattered lines as my eyes began to feel dry and irritated the longer I looked at the rays.

"Sila, now that I'm vampiric, will I burst into flames the moment I step into the sun"?

I heard her cackling wildly in my head as if I'd just told a joke, "The humans have become a brave lot since I've been gone, twisting the abilities of my kind to portray a weakness that does not exist".

"Does not exist, but what do you mean, I am experiencing a lot of discomfort in my eyes just by looking at the Sun's rays thrkugh the door".

"That is only due to the fact that you have become nocturnal in nature, the daylight will be uncomfortable at first but with time you will come to bare it."

With that, I cautiously opened the door, still recalling the weaknesses of vampires taught to me by my parents. Seeing that I was safe, albeit uncomfortable, I set out to find my friends.
