Chapter 2 - Temple of Death

Kaos's P.O.V

Lights.

Bright lights enveloped me, it was warm and nice. The last time I felt light like this was a long time ago. I tried hard to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall by not opening my eyes, this is probably an illusion in this hell I created to torture myself.

I opened my eyes when I felt something tug my leg.

"Kaos...wake up" whatever it was shook me gently and I sat up. "Wake up it's time to go" I could not make out who it was but the voice now sounded so familiar to me and the feeling of nostalgia hit me.

"Humans...Are they still populating the earth or did I kill them all?" I managed to ask, fearing the worst.

"Even after waking up from centuries of sleep, you still worry about the ones who put you here to wither." I know who it is now. The god of time.

"Dahime...why am I still here?" it just dawned on me that I was still in one piece after centuries.

"we did not create you, Kaos. You were birth out of the prayers of humans, the type of prayer that needed blood to be spilled, the request for chaos. Humans are still chaotic as ever. As long as there is Chaos, there is you..." The god of time explained.

"So why did I fall asleep?" if it was not because they turned their backs then why did I fall asleep for such a long time.

"you simply wanted to...you have been asleep for long enough and besides, the one whose fate is entwined with yours has found you and he is in your temple" he pointed to a door and led me to it. "Go" he said before vanishing, leaving me alone.

Author's P.O.V

Dhara and Yara followed the torches deep into the temple which ended up being the end of the receiving hall, the inner most part, where the people offered incense and offering. The walls were different from the receiving hall. There were spiral markings craved deep into the walls and filled with gold which glittered everytime light shine on them. On the floor was a large circle with a pedestal with inscriptions on it.

Yara excitedly pulled out her tools but Dhara stopped her.

"Don't touch anything" he whispered turning her attention to another side of the room. There were murals on a large portion of the walls.

"I'm not seeing things, that's a fox, right?" Yara squinted bringing the light close to the murals. "Yeah, it's definitely a fox." Dhara took the light from her.

"A village head prayed for protection from their enemies who were about to attack them. According to this, his prayer birthed a new god...he prayed for chaos among their enemies and that god delivered...The enemies mistook one another as an enemy and they slaughtered one another until there was no one left..." he paused.

"That's really badass..." Yara admitted in admiration.

"...the village head and his people in their gratitude began to offer sacrifices and burn incense to the god who protected them" he moved to another side of the wall and continued to depict what it said "For a time prosperity reigned, the god became popular amongst people and they came from far and wide to offer incense and pray. But disaster struck...the god turned on them and started to kill them...whenever anyone prayed, they were struck down with lightening...They stopped praying and burning incense and the god also disappeared." He breathed. "why do I feel like there's more to this story...it's not adding up" he scratched the back of his head.

"hey! we're not here for detective work... documentation only! get it together!" Yara shook him causing him to wince, she saw his expression and withdrew immediately "I'm sorry."

Suddenly the ground shook sending small rocks from the ceiling tumbling on them. A eerie whisper filled the room, followed by a blinding light which prompted the two to shield their eyes.

A few seconds later, the light disappeared as it came and what it left being was a beautiful slivery white fox. It was curled up and fast asleep.

"it's so beautiful" Dhara stood awestruck

"Yeah, I'm definitely seeing things now!" Yara exclaimed in disbelief. "I've been in weirder places than this and nothing ever appeared from a blinding white light and a white fox asleep right in front of us!" Yara heaved as she rambled.

"Calm down, Yara." he shrugged and reached out to touch the sleeping fox only to get pulled back Yara. "ow! why do I feel like you're intentionally yanking my bad arm" he frowned, rubbing his throbbing shoulder.

"Are you finally out of your goddamed fucking mind? A fox appears out of nowhere and the first thing you do is try to touch it? Are you mad?"

"What if it was the god of this temple, you know that means we're trespassing right? and besides this probably the only living proof we have of this place...The temple is standing on its last legs and before the officials get here, everything would probably be gone. we can't just leave it here to die!"

"why do I feel like you were expecting something like this to happen..." she frowned "where would you keep it, do you even know how to keep anything alive?" she countered

"my house plants are different...I had no time for them"

"exactly!" she yelled, her voice echoed through the empty room

"besides, I never said anything about taking care of it alone... you'll help"

"like hell I will!" she backed away "I want no part in this...what if you touch it and it kills you or give you an infection"

"Fine, I'll pick it up with my gloves..." The only proof he could bring back, he wasn't just going to let this one go. He started the project and he was sure as hell he would finish it.

The white fox didn't stir when he picked it up, for the first time he noticed the markings on its tail and for a moment, He felt warmth flooding through his body and he felt relaxed but the feeling disappeared as it came. He winced, the pain in his shoulder increased.

"Hey!" she held the torch ready to attack. "it's waking up!"

The fox opened it's eyes and it was like stirring into an abyss. Yara stood frozen with fear, tears dripping from her eyes. Dhara stood there still holding the fox.

"Are you here to pray?" It cocked one head to the side in amusement.

"um... I...you talk! you can talk!" He set it down gently. He laughed in disbelief "yeah, I think I'm starting to hear things too"

"No, you are not. I talk and Who are you?" it circled him.

"uh...My n-name is Dhara Smith, I'm an archaeologist..." he pointed at Yara "she's...crying...what's wrong with her? what did you do to her?" he didn't realize what had happened. "Yara! talk to me!"

"she looked into my eyes...This only happens to people with the wrong intentions! When they gaze into my eyes, this happens" it explained.

"Yara is a good person!" he wouldn't believe someone like Yara would hate or have ill intentions against anyone "Yara is a saint!"

"is she? I am a god! I sense everything and see into the minds of people, she does not have good intentions towards anyone."

"But..." his shoulders slumped, what the fox said trumped all his defenses

"you are starting to doubt it...I will release her but you can ask her yourself."

"what the fuck!!!!" she screamed as she fell backwards. "why the hell was I crying!" she demanded.

"Why?"

"what?" she dusted herself off "why are you looking at me like that?"

"It's strange actually...you never gave me answers to why you decided all of a sudden to join me on this expedition...I recall asking you so many times when we hit deadends...you always avoided it..." he stalked closer to her

"what are you talking about, Dhara." and she backed away.

"you had the chance to explore tombs in Egypt and establish yourself, and you decided to join this one instead because you knew...you knew what we'd find, right? you didn't join me for the documentation, you wanted Kaos!"

"you're pretty sharp..." she smiled, it wasn't her usual warm smile, this one was different; it held malice. "you figured this out all on your own...so smart!" she pulled a dart gun on him.

His hands shot up in surrender. Other people filed into the temple on her command, surrounding them. They didn't speak, they only did as she ordered.

"cage it" She ordered. Her voice was cold, it wasn't the Yara he knew. Kaos was right.

"I can't let you do that..." he stood in front of Kaos defensively "she's a piece of history, I can't let you take her...she belongs to the university"

"Do I look like a give a damn about that backyard school?" Yara hissed. "she's coming with me, I wonder what she'd fetch on the black market!"

"I belong to no one! Now get out of my house!" Kaos growled. A strong draft blew in so suddenly it swept them off their feet. She grew in size until she was brushing against the ceiling of the temple before proceeding to swallowing Yara's men.

Few minutes down, the screaming ceased. Yara was in one corner shaking, apparently exhausted all her ammunition of Kaos.

"Brutal" Dhara mumbled.

"welcome to the Temple of death...pardon my manners" Kaos gave me a bloody grin before reducing in size.
