The bell rang for break time, I reached into my bag and pulled out my lunch, and waited for Uma by her desk.
"I'm so hungry and we've barely gotten through half the day" she exclaimed and I giggled "You're always hungry, there's no surprise there. Come on I'll grab Carol's lunch and we'll meet her at the field."
Today was Friday which meant Carol has a club meeting that's held before the break, she sometimes leaves her lunch box behind, and because we such good friends we agreed to take it for her and hold it until she gets back.
"I honestly don't know why she goes to these club meetings, I think they are a waste of time," Uma said in a matter of a fact tone and I rolled my eyes "Your the one to talk, Miss High jump," I said poking her side.
"Okay okay, point taken but I mean she's part of a music club, what's there to discuss, what instrument sounds better?" She scoffed at her remark.
"You know it's not that, the music club has a lot of important things to discuss like this year's school musical festival, a lot of things can go wrong without proper planning and discussion" I pointed and she pouted.
"Whatever," she said knowing she wasn't going to win this battle. We made our way to our spot which was under the shade of a big sakura tree, it wasn't spring yet so the tree was a beautiful lushes green.
We sat down and I opened the bento Mrs. Urakusai made for me and as always it just screamed anime material, not like I'm complaining, I enjoy my anime lunch and today's theme was Totoro "Woah that looks so good" Uma said eyeing my food with the same hunger as the Walker "Nope all mine" I said playfully and stuck my tongue out and she started begging me for a taste.
I playfully declined again, laughing as she attempted to take some of my food but to only miss, while this was going on my eyes landed on the new guy laying under a tree, a little way across from us.
I stopped playing and just stared at him, he didn't seem bothered by the people walking by him and probably whispering about him. I haven't even seen anyone approach him or attempt to make friends, that made me feel oddly guilty.
Something about the way he carried himself almost made me feel ashamed of how I act when people comment about my ears, I've had people pull and tease me either calling me an elf or a walker, back then my ears were long but have since gone down and now they just pointy like a vampire or demon as some would call me sometimes they would even call me Diablo.
To be honest, growing up hasn't been very easy, it was really hard for me to make friends cause of my ears and the constant bullying, it got to the point I actually became fed up and ended up losing control of my powers and almost burnt everyone.
I'm still haunted by that day and my powers haven't been the same since.
"What you looking at?" I nearly jumped out of my skin, forgetting that Uma was by me, she looked in the direction I was facing with a piece of hot dog she took from my lunch hanging from her mouth.
"Nothing, I was just in thought is all" I quickly tried to change the subject my cheeks burning hot in embarrassment, and just shoved food into my mouth.
"Oh it's the new guy, we should go say hello," Uma said, I quickly grabbed her arm before she could get up and go to him.
"Maybe we shouldn't, he looks like he wants to be left alone, I mean he looks pretty comfortable on his own," I said seeing as he didn't want to be disturbed.
"But as a class rep, I must fulfill my duties and make all my classmates feel welcomed," Uma said sounding like a president giving a speech.
"Just let him be" I begged her.
"Oh don't be such a chicken, come on, up you go!"
"W-wait Uma!"
But I was too late, she had already got me standing and was practically dragging me towards the Kai, with me softly protesting to her so he wouldn't hear but it was no use and we got there before I could free my hand from her grip.
I couldn't see his eyes but I could tell he noticed us when his head slightly turned to face us "Greetings classmate, I'm Uma and this is Zita, one of your classmates"
"We just thought to come over and give you a friendly welcome" The frog girl greeted enthusiastically, I just simply waved and greeted him normally.
He simply turned his head away "Hi" he said with a deadpan voice "What do you want?" He said coldly like we preferred to be left alone.
His attitude didn't seem to faze Uma but sure as hell made me want to go back and eat my lunch. Uma gently bumped my arm and whispered "Invite him over for karaoke night" I looked at her in shock, I was not about to do that, he doesn't even know us but Uma silently persisted and I knew I wasn't going to win when it comes to making friends with her.
I took a deep breath and calmed myself down, closing my hands into fists as they started sweating, I'm so nervous, I've never been this nervous. Is it normal to be this nervous? Okay stop over-thinking it, you can do this.
Can I?
In the worst-case scenario, he could just say no which is also the best-case scenario and we never speak again. Yes, that sounds like a good idea, solid plan.
Oh, shoot, I've been standing awkwardly in silence, I must look like a total idea. Say something before the awkward silence drags one!
"Go out to karaoke with me!"
Oh, my soul, someone end me now.
A prominent blushed crept up and I wanted to turn back or better yet wished for the ground to open up and just eat me. Uma just broke down in laughter at my blunder and collapsed onto the floor.
"I-I mean not like a date, that would be weird, we only just met and that's just so weird I didn't mean to blurt that out, I mean I did but I didn't want to say it like that but you don't have to agree to come if-" my frantic mumbling only caused Uma to laugh even harder, tears streaming down her face.
All of a sudden he stood up and walked up to me making me flinch and shift in my spot, my heart spiked and my hands were sweating more than ever, a flashback to the forest with the guy caused me to blush even more.
"I-It's completely fine if you don't want to come" I swallowed, my mind racing with thoughts I couldn't understand and he just kept staring at me, making me more nervous than I am.
"Okay" was all he said and walked off, It was my turn to be confused as my brain slowly caught up "Oh, well then uhm you can meet me, I mean us, my friends and I at Northway street it's where the karaoke club is, I'll text you the rest of the details" I called after him.
I quickly grabbed Uma by her leg and dragged her to our spot where she remained laughing, Carol was already sitting down by the time we got back.
"And now, what's got Uma in stitches," Carol asked, Uma jumped at the chance and told her the whole event, I sat down and just buried my head into my knees, completely embarrassed.
"And then she said 'Go out to karaoke with me' she practically asked him out on a date," Uma said laughing while she pushed me eagerly, I punched her by the shoulder "Ow what was that for?" She protested rubbing her shoulder "That was for embarrassing me and putting me through that ordeal" I said, pouting at her.
"You should be thanking me you know, you'd be sitting here and staring at him all day," she said pointing out what I did before we spoke to him "I was not staring, I was thinking of something, there's a huge difference" I sullied, turning away from Uma.
Technically I was but she doesn't need to know that.
"Girls, girls calm down, there's no need to fight, there's nothing we can do about it now, so what did he say?" Carol said looking between me and Uma.
"He said okay but I think he thinks I meant it as a date," I said covering my face with my hands "You at least cleared it up, its normal for people to get nervous and mix up their words" Carol reassured while gently squeezing my shoulder, comforting me "Did you tell him when and where?" Uma seemed more enthusiastic but then again this is Uma.
"Ya, she told him where and said she'll text him the rest of the details-" suddenly Uma went quiet and I seemed to catch up as to why "I forgot to give him my number."
We sat there silently in utter dismay, as the gentle breeze passed by.
Carol noticed our sunken expressions and sighed "You know you can get his number from the class group text, right?" She pulled out her phone, and went to the group text, and showed us the group.
I looked at Uma and smacked her over the head as the class rep she should have remembered taking his number and adding him to the group, how is she a straight-A student but can't seem to remember something like this.
She rubbed the back of her head smiling sheepishly "Oops" was all she said and I had to hold back from smacking her again.
I sighed and reached over for my lunch "I'll send the rest of the information to him when I get home" I said stuffing my mouth with a Totoro onigiri.
Both Uma and Carol nodded with the plan and we continued with the rest of our break talking about the usual things in the world.
The bell rang for our next lesson, I told the girls to go ahead without me as I needed the bathroom.
They both nodded and took my lunch box for me as I headed to the bathroom to relieve myself, after that, I washed my hands and walked feeling a lot better and no pressure from my bladder.
I wasn't looking where I was going and bumped into someone, almost falling back from the impact "Oh I'm sorry, I should have look where I was...K-Kai?" My voice wavered causing me to blush and my hands to start sweating again.
He didn't say anything, just stood there looking down at me, I shifted in my spot as it felt like he was scrutinizing me under those bangs. My heart quickened and the butterflies formed in my stomach again, why am I always getting nervous around him?
"Uhm, I'll just...yeah" I waved at him nervously and started jogging back so that I wasn't late for English, feeling his gaze on me as I walked away.
I got to class and took my seat, the teacher hasn't arrived yet so I had time to chat with Uma and Carol.
"Guess who I bumped into the corridors?" I interjected, Carol turned around in her seat and Uma leaned in closer to hear what I was going to say "Who?" She asked.
"Kai" I answered "Here's the thing, he didn't say anything to me, he just stood there and stared at me" Uma and Carol both exchanged confused looks "Nothing at all?" Carol asked and I nodded.
"Maybe he likes you" Uma added wiggling her eyebrows, I immediately blushed at that idea "No he doesn't and stop wiggling your brows like that, it's weird," I said and faced away from them, using my hair to hide my face and the blush radiating on my cheeks.
"Well when you get home, don't forget to text him about it tomorrow," Carol said turning to face the front as soon as the teacher walked in.
