Chapter 16 - You Know Why

I go home, bored. I wish I could hang out with Izzie. I still am kind of mad at her for what she said to Evan though. I sit on my chair in my room, and text Evan. He went on his ride along today, and he thinks he did good. I text him until I hear my door open. I assume It's just Elsa being annoying, but then I hear a voice. "Hi." Izzie says. I jump up. I look at her in shock. "Hi." She closes the door. She doesn't say anything for a second, but then she looks at me. "I'm a jerk." She says. She sits down on my bed with me, and we talk. I ask about her mom. "It happens sometimes. I just feel bad for the kids, it's scary for them." I nod. "But they're with my Grandma now. Thank you for letting me stay here." "Of course." I tell her. "I am so sorry for the way I acted at that dinner party." She says. "Dude, It's okay." "No. It's not okay." She looks down, and starts to talk again. "I was just stirring shit up just because…" She trails off, not finishing her sentence. "What?" I ask, looking into her eyes. "Because I was jealous." She admits, looking right at me. "Why?" She looks away, then back at me. "You know why." She says, shyly looking into my eyes. I feel my cheeks turn red. I do know why, I just haven't been able to admit it.

Later, we go to sleep. Well, Izzie does. I can't get to sleep. Every time I'm around Izzie, I feel confused. But she's magnetic, and I can't help but go near her anyway. I can't tell her how I feel, because then I would be cheating on Evan. I can't do that to him. I love him. It's pretty dark in my room, but I can tell that Izzie is facing away from me. She shifts in her sleep, and her elbow digs into my hair. "Ow. You're on my hair." I whisper. "Dude. You're on my hair." I whisper again. She doesn't hear me, she's in a deep sleep. I close my eyes, and try not to think about her, when I feel her shift in my bed again. I open my eyes to see her face merely an inch from mine. I lean back, startled by how close she got to me. But then I lean back in. I want to kiss her, at least once. I know she's sleeping, but I need to know if my feelings are real. When I'm about to kiss her, I see Evan's sheep that he got for me after my appendix surgery on the bedside table. It's staring at me, like it knows what I'm doing. I turn around, away from Izzie.

I still can't sleep, and Izzie sleeping this close to me is making me nervous, so I make a bed with blankets and pillows on the floor. When I wake up in the morning, I try to rush out of the house so I don't have to talk to her. I don't know what I would say. She confessed her feelings to me, and I still haven't brought it up again, so I know she probably will soon. And I can't deal with that right now. I'm packing my school bag before I walk out the door, when I hear Izzie come down the stairs. "Did you sleep on the floor last night?" She asks, with concern in her voice. "Yeah, I did. It was sweaty in there, you're like a furnace." I lie. I just couldn't be that close to her, it felt like cheating. I turn towards her. "Maybe my body's just used to living in an apartment, where the heater doesn't always work." She says. She walks a little closer to me. "Are you alright?" Izzie asks. "Who wants eggs?" Mom asks, before I have time to answer Izzie. "I'm heading out." I tell her. "So early?" Izzie asks. "Yeah, I'm behind in a class, so I'm gonna get there early and study." "You should have told me, nerd, I would have come with you." She replies. "Well, I didn't want to wake you up." I smile, and lie to her again. "What about running?" Izzie asks. "I'm gonna skip this morning, I'm a little tired." I tell her. "Of course you are. You were fooling around with your friend all night." Dad says. That sounded worse than he probably thought. I laugh. "I gotta go. See ya." I walk out the door, leaving Izzie behind.
