In the morning I get my usual good morning text from Evan, along with a text from Izzie. "Newton!!! We on for studying tonight?!" It reads. I tell her I have family plans, so I can't hang out. What happened with her last night still has me feeling confused and weird. I don't think seeing her tonight would make anything better. I decide to hang out with Evan instead.
"How's family time?" Izzie texts me, when I'm with Evan. "Same old, same old." I reply, lying. I feel bad lying to her, but I don't know what would happen if I saw her. "You never gave me my birthday present." I tell Evan. "Yeah, I gave you that necklace. Oh. You mean the other thing?" He asks, as he takes off his shirt. "Are you sure? Because we can wait." He says. I nod. He starts kissing me, and I can't help but think about what kissing Izzie would feel like.
The next night I hang out with Izzie. I feel like since I had sex with Evan again, things will be fine with Izzie, and soon I'll forget all about us almost kissing. "I can't believe we drove 4 towns away just to find a 711 that serves cotton candy Slurpee's." Izzie says, after she takes a long sip of her Slurpee. We sit down together in my car, that I finally got my license for. "I have no regrets." I say, as I smile at her. "So, guess what? I had sex again." She rolls her eyes at me. "With Evan?" "No. With myself. Still counts though right?" I ask teasingly. "Shut up." She laughs. We both take a sip of our Slurpee's. "Yeah, with Evan." She looks down at the floor. "I really love him." I tell her. "I know you do." The way she says that makes it sound like she's almost trying to convince herself of that. "It's just like sometimes a thing feels so right." I say, looking ahead of me. I hear her shift in her seat. I feel her hand brush against mine, and I instantly get butterflies. I feel her hand move closer to mine, and I move mine closer to hers. I feel my breathing start to get heavy as our hands move together, slowly entwining. I hear my phone buzz, but I keep my hand entwined with hers, feeling the heat of her hand seep into mine. I look over at my phone and see Evan calling me. I decline the call with my other hand. I feel like I'm frozen in this moment. All I care about right now is her.
Soon my mom texts me, and I slowly let go of her warm hand. "Is everything okay?" Izzie asks, looking at my phone. "It's Elsa." I say. Izzie nods. "She said, hi honey bear with a bear emoji. Can you please pick up a fire extinguisher on the way home?" We both laugh for a minute. "Yeah, so we should probably go." I say. "Yeah." Izzie says, still laughing. "Let's go, honey bear." Izzie says. My cheeks turn red, and I start to drive.
