Chapter 4 - Different

When Friday hits, I meet up with the track team at Don's. I hope they like the place. Evan meets me there. I didn't really want him to come, because he's not as well dressed and formal as the people from Newton. I just didn't want to be embarrassed, but I guess that sounds a little bitchy. We're all already sitting down when Evan shows up. "Hey!" I say. I walk up to him and try to give him a kiss, which misses his face completely. Shit, that's awkward. "Newton, is this him?" Izzie asks, smiling. "Yeah, this is Evan." They all say hi, and Evan sits down at the end of the table, near me. "What's with the Newton thing?" He asks, wondering why Izzie called me that. "That's just what they call me." I tell him. "You know, I was Casey's first friend at Clayton." Nate tells Evan. "Oh, I thought that Izzie was." "No." Izzie says, as she looks at me. "I was actually wicked mean to her." She laughs. "You were so mean to me." I say, smiling at her. "I know, I'm sorry about that. But I'm so nice now." "Meh." We all laugh. Evan looks a little awkward. "So, how's Newton without Newton?" Izzie asks Evan. "I don't know. I actually go to the technical school-" "But he's really smart." I cut him off. I know technical school sounds like a dumb thing to some people, so I say that. "We'll take your word for it." Izzie laughs. Her laughing makes my heart skip a beat, and I still don't know why. Maybe it's because we're just good friends. I grab the last slice of pepperoni pizza, and Nate grabs a pepperoni off of it. "Ew!" I yell at him and laugh. "You grabbed the last slice." He says. Izzie sits close to me and keeps brushing up against me often, which for some reason I can't stop thinking about the rest of the night.

After the night is over, I decide to go home with Evan. "That went pretty well." I tell him, as we walk to his car. "I mean I don't think so, but I'm not that smart, am I?" "Oh shit, I'm sorry. That was a really shitty thing to say. I was just nervous. But we made it through, you're in." I tell him. "Yay." He says, sarcastically. "Casey, you're laughing at jokes you don't normally laugh at. They know more personal stuff about you than I do, and I watched some rich douche eat a pepperoni right out of your mouth." He says angrily. "Well that's just Nate." I tell him. "Well I don't know Nate. And I don't know this Newton either." "What does that mean?" I ask him. "You're just different around them. You're someone that's embarrassed of me. And you're even getting drunk at school." "Well I think you're overreacting. They're really cool, you just have to get to know them." I reply. "I don't want to get to know your friends. They kind of suck." He says. I feel anger wash over me. "You should leave. I'll just get a ride with someone else." I tell him. "I bet you can. They probably drive a much better car too." He says, as he gets in the car and drives away.
