Chapter 29 - The War Begins

Although Rama had decided to fight, He wanted to try once more to make peace with Ravana. So He sent Angada, Vali's son, as a messenger to Ravana. Angada leapt into the hall in which Ravana met his ministers. He said, "I am a messenger of Rama. I am Angada, Vali's son. I have brought you a message from Rama."

But Ravana was so angry that he did not want to hear anymore. He ordered the Rakshasas, "Capture this monkey and torture him for breaking into our assembly!"

Angada allowed them to capture him but soon he pushed them away and returned to Rama.

Now that all means of peace were destroyed, the war began. Although many monkey warriors were killed, Ravana's side also suffered many losses. The mighty demon, Kumbhakarna, the brother of Ravana, who slept six months of the year, was called to the battlefield, but was easily killed by Rama's arrows. One by one, the demons that were the strength of Ravana's army fell.

When Ravana's son, Indrajit entered the battle field, he tricked Rama and Lakshmana with his powers to disappear and appear. He vanished suddenly and shot many arrows at Them, and then formed a snake-like rope of arrows that bound both the brothers in their poisonous grip. This was called the nagapasha. Rama and Lakshmana were wounded very badly and Lakshmana fainted and fell down. Vibhishana could make out that He had not died and he asked Sugriva to send for the doctor, Sushena. Sushena looked at the prince and said that only two herbs which were found in the mountains could heal Him. He asked that Hanuman be sent to collect these herbs.

Suddenly there was a strong gust of wind as if giant wings were flapping above them. The snakes which bound Rama's brother fled from fear and freed the hero.
