Chapter 29 - The Scythe

The next class of the first day was team combat. It focused on how to work together as a team with others to better coordinate yourself in battle.

The professor, Professor Sines, was a very boring teacher who made the class pass by at a snail's pace. Ojero spent almost every second talking to the Night Demon just to keep his brain functioning through the levels of mind numbing waste.

They did basic icebreakers, learned random and worthless facts, and the teacher then spent an hour going over worthless points about how a "A team is more effective than a single man" and other garbage that Ojero couldn't care less about.

'I will never understand their reliance on others. If they put as much focus on their own growth as they did socializing they would be much stronger'

"I agree, master"

Ojero had noticed the Night Demon had agreed with everything he had thought since he obtained him, and although it was a little strange it's not like he minded it.

When the bell rang, the professor was mid speech about how "A team is the backbone of victory."

Usually Ojero would race out of a class he disliked, but he was half asleep by that time. He dragged himself out of his seat and left the room.

'Although that class was a waste, I am looking forward to the next one.'

He had weapons training. It involved both material and magical weapons.

Strangely enough, the room he was directed to was the same one as the familiar's room.

'Does this mean I have to deal with Erica's tricks again?'

Ojero could still remember the feeling of sickness her "fun" had cost them all.

Preparing his mind, and his stomach, he pushed open the door and walked through the portal. He once again arrived at the arena, but Erica was nowhere to be seen.

In her place, was a different professor. He was a frail old man with no hair left on his head. His skin was very wrinkly, and he walked hunched over. He had a long wooden cane in one hand, and wore old brown robes. Even when standing straight up, he couldn't be more than five feet tall (152 cm).

His old eyes studied Ojero, before turning back to focus on the portal. Ojero, feeling a little awkward at his gaze, just walked over to the stairs, and descended to the arena.

Soon, everyone had arrived and they were all standing around the bottom of the arena. The only one who wasn't down there was the professor. However, they soon saw him slowly walk down the stairs.

He took them one at a time, slowly, methodically. He could feel all the students watching him confused, but he just kept taking his time.

Once he reached the bottom of the stairs, he hobbled his way towards the students. Of course he also did this very slowly.

Once he was near the students, he started talking. Surprisingly, they could all hear his aged and ragged voice.

"Today you will be summoning your elemental weapon. Focus on your magic crystals and try to make your mana take a physical form. That is all. Do not ask me any more questions. If you fail, you fail. You may try again every class lesson till you succeed. Those who pass will start training next class."

With these words, the old man stood there, perfectly still. They would have assumed he was dead if not for the fact he had spoken to them moments before.

They all just awkwardly started to spread out, not really too sure of what they were doing. Even Ojero was confused, but just then the Night Demon spoke up.

"I may be of assistance, master. An elemental weapon can be summoned by familiars too, and I am aware of the most useful method."

'Well, that is convenient I suppose. How exactly do I summon it?'

"You must focus on the mana inside you, master. Many of your people believe you should only focus on your most powerful element, but this is not the best way. I recommend trying to use all three at once, fusing them into weapons. It will not only be a stronger weapon, but will harmonize with you more."

"Draw all of your mana out like you are planning to use it, but instead of casting it, keep it focused on your hand. Allow it to shape itself, do not force it. The most important thing to realize is that it is a part of you, all mana is. Do not treat it like a weapon, treat it as a new limb."

Listening to the Night Demon, Ojero began to coax the mana out of his crystals, and he felt it flowing through his veins. The feeling of power it gave was intoxicating.

Focusing on his hand, the mana naturally started to circulate towards that area. In his palm, a rolling ball of purple, black, and a hint of green started to form.

Its glow was growing, becoming brighter and brighter. A few nearby students saw it, and looked towards it. The ball was now the size of Ojero's head, and was growing.

He fed it more and more powerful, but he never felt like he had spent the strength. It was like he could keep feeding it indefinitely. However, each time he fed it he felt stronger. As if it doubled his current strength each time he gave more.

'Is this what it feels like to be a king? To command such power, all at the tips of your fingers?'

"It is, master, now let the weapon form itself."

Following the Night Demons suggestion, Ojero let the mana take its form.

The ball of light grew huge, and then small in an instant. All the nearby light was sucked into it, as a large scythe appeared in Ojero's hand.

It was a sleek black color, with skulls and bones adorning its shaft. A slight green sheen was visible on it, and it radiated a chill. However, no one but Ojero could see the weapon as it sucked the light out of anything near it.

"Well done, master. You have formed the Scythe of Death."
