Kip had to give James some credit, they were slowly making the beast bleed to death and no one had died yet. The constant streams of little spells against the giant beast were adding up after three hours of fighting. He watched the yak's horns ram into an old car and send it flying.
He winced as a guild member got caught in its trajectory but sighed in relief seeing a sky mage pull the member away and then check them for injuries. He must have been worried for nothing. The guild really did have monster fighting down to a science.
"Away!" Yelled James as the watch on Kip's wrist beeped again. All the members fell back immediately as the Yak started to glow again.
Huh shouldn't it have sent out its wave by now? Kip watched the beast as it seemed to pause looking around at the guild members who were already out of its range. It's also getting smarter Kip thought.
Sure it was covered in injuries but the yak still had plenty of fight. Kip couldn't help thinking that maybe the guild was a little inefficient in some ways. He would have suggested targeting its front legs so it couldn't move. Its fur coat was practically made of steel which it why they were currently targeting its head.
Well either way it'd likely die in the next 30 minutes. Seriously though this was the first time it hadn't used its wave immediately, why was it pausing? He looked at the beast, was it crouching? They surely hadn't done enough damage to it for it to need to lie down yet?
The guild members had started to take notice as well and were frowning, was it trying to lure them back toward it? Kip heard a few muttering about how they weren't stupid enough to fall for a trap like that. They were starting to debate sending a small group as a bait to then get dragged away after the wave. Another mentioned that maybe the yak was using the time to heal.
Kip looked at it again, no something else was up. To a standard person it might look like the yak was laying down, but he'd been surrounded by them for years 24/7 it was crouching. It was, planning? This clearly said trap but it wasn't the standard kind either.
He heard one member mention a possible charge by the beast and another mention nah yak's are known for being slow. Kip looked at it again, if it was a charge it would have aligned its legs different this was, what?
Suddenly it dawned on him "It's going to jump!" he yelled. He also knew at this point they were to close.
Another member looked at him "Jump?" he questioned.
He didn't have to wait for an answer though. Kip cursed slightly, he should have been able to recognize that pattern sooner, wolves displayed it all the time. The yak launched itself into the air and easily cleared 3 football fields in length. It landed in front of the line of guild members with a loud bellow and released its aura wave.
Kip felt weird like a warm breeze had traveled over him with no effect at all. He clenched his teeth in anger seeing all the other members had basically frozen up. What a weird mutation power.
The yak looked down on its prey and Kip could of sworn it was smiling. It stomped the ground with a foot and charged sending several members flying with its horns. It then looked down and Kip saw Kyle frozen below it. The yak picked up a hoof ready to start squashing the insects below it.
Sure Kip had said he's stay on the sidelines and only do support, but he was totally breaking that promise now. He ran toward the yak concentrating all his null or martial art energy into his legs. What he needed right now was speed.
He could see the yak's hoof starting its decent and he pushed his burning legs to go faster. Almost there! He wasn't aiming for the falling foot or for Kyle though. Instead his focus was on the front foot still on the ground.
The yak could easily pummel people many times while he tried to save a few, so instead he went for unbalancing the beast. The best battle plan against a large monster, the Achilles heel tendon, was his goal.
The front leg was right in front of him and he pulled out his two swords. He drew them both to the side of his run and then slashed them across the lower leg of the yak.
The yak let out a scream and toppled sideways toward Kip. He leapt sideways and kept running to avoid being crushed by the falling mountain of a monster. Two of its fur strands brushed against him, one on his face leaving a gash on his left cheek, the other across his left shoulder slicing it open.
Kip could feel blood dripping down his arm but ignored it. It wasn't life threatening.
The yak stomped back to its feet, all of its attention was now on Kip. Which was good since it was ignoring the guild members but also bad, because Kip couldn't outrun a several story tall yak. Kip gulped a little as his eyes met the yak's. How long till the freeze wore off? He didn't want to keep this up very long.
Assuming its duration was the same as its wave interval, probably 10 minutes. He gulped again as the yak lowered its head. Could he even manage to stay alive that long with this thing around?
