Chapter 16 - A New Trick

The bear was now charging at me from about 10 meters behind me. It was one I had to avoid in order not to lose any more grains, but ordinarily dodging was nearly impossible because the bear's speed greatly outpaced mine, and it could also change course mid-air, making dodging targets even easier to hit.

I had to save myself and I believe the trick I have been saving is best to be used right now. My plan is to cast a shadow over myself that is large enough to cover a 2 meter radius.

My strategy isn't perfect, and it's only a theory, but I'm hoping that because I can feel the bear's presence in my shadows, I'll be able to sense its direction and location before it gets closer than a meter or two to me, allowing me to estimate its attack. Overall, I'm attempting to compensate for my lack of speed in comparison to the bear by giving myself more time and knowledge about the scenario before evading.

This also means that the shadow does not have to be super dark, any darkness works, even natural looking shadows but why not create darker shadows to limit the bear's vision as well hence increasing my chances of a successful dodge.

I cast the shadow while the bear lunges forward for what it presumes a successful and deadly attack that will definitely land on its target. Once it jumps I feel as if dodging is definitely possible.

I am aware of the bear's specific location as well as the direction in which it is going. In my imagination, I had a perfect image of the bear leaping towards me with its massive stature. When the bear gets within 1 meter of my position, I jump backwards to the far left side, where the bear will have the most difficulty reaching.

The bear changes direction mid air but it seems it also did not expect me to dodge to the location I jumped at, It was shocked but that did not stop it from continuing its attack. What happened next was somewhat fortunate for me but a definite loss for the bear.

My trick worked but I believe I need a bit more speed or practice because I definitely dodged the fatal attack it would have been if I hadn't dodged by the bear still clawed at my left shoulder even if it was not as bad, it still caused a slight decrease in grains.

The bear lost my main body and it continued to jump through the air until it landed back on the ground, no land is not the correct word, it would be more accurate to say the it got smashed to the ground because of its ridiculous speed.

The impact was devastating, it got two adults near the location killed since all these events took place in a matter of seconds and the humans near us did not have the chance to escape.

This was an improvement in a battle where no victor emerged for a long period of time. I was getting closer to becoming successful. I had decent defensive measures against the bear now and I only need more strength to injure the bear so that I can finish the bizarre creature.

The others who saw the death of two of their kind and the devastating battle were truly horrified, some collapsed right on the spot while others tried to escape. It was a scene filled with screams and cries of the weak. They simply ignored these humans and focused its attention solely on me, its true competition.

As for gaining strength, no good and large animals were present in my way here and it is risky to make another attempt to run in another direction in hopes of finding such animals so my only option is...the humans right here.

Even if I convince myself that consuming humans is the only way, it still does not change much because it still bothers me that I have to slaughter a great number of humans including elderly and children. Ahh...It makes me struggle within myself to find a reasonable explanation for the action I am going to commit.

I have to just do it without thinking, it is the only rational option available to me in such a dire situation. I mean some are already dead so might as well use them and the rest, well, It is either kill or be killed meaning I have no choice if I want to live.

There is no way to put distance between us to consume some of the humans first because I have now way to perform such a task and even if I do, it will take some time which the humans can use to escape from me. Not worth it.

My plan is to just run around and let the bear finish off the humans but in case I have to also do it, I can just dodge the bear and go around killing the humans by throwing punches which should work considering my bone crushing punches. With my plant intact, I get ready to start the dark yet necessary massacre by resolving my mind. I need to embrace my hatred of humans and the desire to live in order to be able to carry this out.

And it begins, I continue running from the bear while it chases me. I have to use my newly developed shadow trick in order to dodge the bear and in some instances, I fail to fully dodge and get a slight injury but in the end it is working.

The bear is stomping and running all over the place. Its massive body and unimaginable speed are enough to kill and even shred some of the humans. The bear seems to regard the humans as mere bugs meaning it does not try to kill them but it also does not try to avoid them or save them. It is simply ignoring them.

This continues for quite a couple of minutes, death and blood can be seen all around this camping site. The lake is colored red and the strong scent of iron is all over the place. The horrifying yet beneficial things is that only half the humans have died as of right now. Many still live, running or sitting down like a true bug.

This is a true one sided massacre.
