Chapter 17 - Massacre

The sun was still shining brightly on all the amazing, vibrant places on Earth. The sun will fall beyond the horizon in a few hours, and the moon will take the shift to somewhat lighten the night.

But true darkness had already arrived with the sun shining down on it. True misery had already swept through a single region, leaving a trail of blood and cries in the wake of that bright and wonderful day.

I was still running and dodging while attempting to find a way to consume the ones that had already fallen. There was practically no way to do such a task because the bear was unrelenting and enraged at the time. It appears that I have injured its ego, rendering its status as a powerful beast ineffective because it failed to hunt down a weaker creature than itself.

Looking at the field of battle and massacre, at least 60-70 percent of the humans have died due to the sheer power and speed of the bear, its massive body can randomly kill 1-3 humans every time it charges at me and a successful dodge that causes no fatal injuries to me, makes this bear a pretty good killing machine.

As for me, I'm doing my part by killing some humans because the bear isn't going to do it all for me. Some I have to go out of my way to finish because not only do I need to consume these humans, but I also need to prevent them from spreading any news about this massacre because it is large enough that some may believe the information given by these people, unlike the three teenagers I killed in the previous forest.

The killing continues on as those killed by the bear don't even have time to beg for another shot at life because they die seconds after realizing the bear and I are charging in their direction.

The ones slain by me are in the same condition as the others, but occasionally my punches just bring them close to death, so I presume they get a few seconds to reflect about their lives and such before dying.

In reality, their situation is worse than those murdered by the bear because they must endure their anguish until death, and their pain is likely to be excruciating due to the crushing of their ribs and organs. There are also cases where one just loses a leg or two due to their placement, but I still finish them in the same way.

Human bodies are now all over the place. Some people can be seen on the ground with a limb missing and tears streaming down their cheeks. I believe their tears are caused by anguish, death, or having witnessed the deaths of their families and children before their own.

There are also those resting upon a tree trunk, trying to deal with their immense pain even though they have seen others die from situations similar to their own. The group in the lake is now either dead from shock like many on land or because of their attempt at escaping to land.

Because the bear and I never ventured inside the lake due to my weakness, most of those who remained in the water are alive but bloodied as a result of the lake's new bloody tint. They are the cowards who stood by and watched others perish, yet their decision was the only rational one in this camp site.

Finally, there were the humans who died in the most heinous way possible. The ones who were in the way of the charging bear when it leaped back down after failing to injure me. Such people were entirely crushed by the bear's enormous weight. Their bodies were shattering at every single place as they struggled to breathe, causing them the most agonizing torment before death.

This continues for a good amount of time before I decide to start consuming some of the humans on the ground in order to increase my strength so that I can finish this prolonged battle.

It will be difficult for me to execute it well, but I have a strategy. I suppose the finest time to consume is when I avoid the bear and it falls to the ground. Even though it is only a couple of seconds, it should be enough to allow me to cast some shadows around a couple of bodies so I can start drenching them in blood and then consuming them.

I might as well start with bodies farthest from me in order to build enough speed for the bear to not be able to control its jump after I dodge. With my decision intact, I rush towards a patch of 4 humans near a crushed swamp green colored tent.

The bear chases me as usual and outpaces me while I try to outsmart it instead. I get very close to the tent but the shadow I casted on myself which I kept this whole time allows me to know that the bear is already at striking range. With this information, I quickly sidestep and create shadows across a 5-10 meter radius, covering both the crushed tent and its surrounds.

I then rush over to the humans and begin drenching as much blood as possible from their bodies in order to absorb as much strength as possible from them. I then proceed to consume the first body while the bear enters my shadows.

Now all I have to do is try to avoid the bear as much as possible while consuming the other two humans. Moving on to the second corpse, I repeat the same actions but this time I move with the body to avoid the blinded bear.

As we go in circles without the bear's knowledge, I finish consuming the second body and feel very strong, but it's not even enough to assist me inflict a little wound on the bear. Now I'm moving about till I can grab the third and final body. It takes a few seconds, but I manage to grasp and consume it as well.

With that finished, I dash out of the shadows and move on to another batch of humans.
