Chapter 5 - 5. UNPRODUCTIVE MANPOWER

High manpower was a serious problem, that to non working type and majority in higher age bracket, the outcome of hiding of actual age at the time of recruitment when recruiters took large sums of money to indulge in this practice, and one of such person became Chairman of a big PSU, again by offering large sum to the minister as this practice was set in his blood and he raised a contingent wherever he worked to practice corrupt practices for which our country was always down the second position in enlisted nations of the world. Their wrong doing was taking a toll and we borrowed costly money as a bank loan to remove extra and non-performing persons with the scheme approved by the government. Many mishaps in the form of killing of VRS taking employees and duping by near relations were reported, and we took extra pain to get deposited the money in banks and arranged for regular earning in the form of bank interest, which became popular and a means of relief. Also we trained them in new skills if they desired to work and earn before actual separation at company's expense, and also encouraged formation of co-operatives who were given smaller value contracts on a preferential basis and taught them to run the business with regular guidance and assistance. This could be successful in a very limited way but whosoever applied, got some success despite the higher age group in reality, and we didn't charge earnest money at one time and deducted in installments from their bills. This was greatly appreciated and I was asked by the ministry to prepare a write up, which of course one director presented as his own and got rewarded, which I didn't mind as long as this was appreciated and could have been used by many others.

We were able to bring down manpower by twenty five hundred leaning most profit centers and only supervision in one way or other was possible. This demanded more involvement of executives and they were forced to give up adherence to designations and work on equal levels' ' All jobs to be performed by anyone through quick switching over in needs". Initially they resisted but were forced when their own survival became important and good understanding developed in short time, proceeding on long leaves came down, families got tuned to this thinking and their lifestyles took a better turn. Some reports came in when kids and wives forced individuals not to ignore the office and readied themselves to perform routine chores in the household, never imagined even by me. My planned family got together on my visit to different places and wives came forward to thank me for the healthy changes in their life, which I accepted humbly and sincerely, responding with kind words of appreciation for their true efforts in this direction. This was learning for me, how simple thinking can change the work culture of a company and create a forward looking approach. My management skill was shaping up well for me to remember for my whole life. But our thrust of getting orders regularly continued and the order book was improving. I touched the level of nine hundred crore while I aimed for one thousand in my tenure of two years.
