Chereads / The Lonely Hunter / Chapter 19 - 19: Job Quest

Chapter 19 - 19: Job Quest

Before Kal started his hunting career, he had to do different types of jobs to earn money so he can eat. He didn't have time to have fun since he always took his jobs as priority. The only source of entertainment he had was watching TV. When he do night shifts in grocery stores. The news would always be about hunters and sanctum. He idolized powerful hunters and always see himself as an ant compared to them. He was fascinated by their martial arts, their prowess and how amazing they looked in TV. Even after becoming a hunter, he always humbles himself that he will never be like them and if he could learn a martial art or two, he wouldn't compare himself to the hunters he had been watching when he was still working.

"You must be kidding right? I mean I can't even compare myself to Dontrelle or even you guys! Ain't I just a normal hunter? Geniuses like those hunters I see on TV could probably do much better than me. Come on now guys, don't praise me that much, you're gonna make me blush." Kal said to them in a laughing manner. Lin and Dante felt infuriated to what Kal said but didn't show it. They activate their voice transmission using their mana and talk to themselves without Kal hearing what they're talking about,

'Is he truly serious or he's just being arrogant? Does he not realize that he just mastered one of the hardest dagger arts in a single night as if he was just learning his abcs?' Lin Wei said to Dante in an annoyed tone. Dante sighed and responded to her.

'He is probably serious.' Dante said in a sigh.

'What? How can you say that from just looking at him? Just look at his expressions? Doesn't it look like he's making fun of us that we can't do something that he can easily do?' Lin Wei said in irritation as he try not to look at Kal with dismay. Dante briefly sighed and explained to Lin Wei.

'I have checked Kal's background and found out that he had stopped going to school in his 8th grade after his dad was deemed dead from an expedition. It took quite a toll to him since his father was his only remaining relative and without any financial help, he had to pause his education and focus on finding jobs to earn money for his daily needs. Since he had lived a harsh life, he wasn't really aware of common sense in the hunter's society and even after registering as a hunter, he didn't clearly understood the in depth information for being an awakened and was entirely focus on the earnings he could gain from killing monsters. Since he was only able to see great things about hunters in televisions, his belief of powerful hunters might have been too exaggerated.' Dante explained to her. Lin Wei understood what he was talking awakened decided to stop her triggered thoughts.

'Poor kid, he had to live a harsh life aline and believed in complete delusions.' Lin Wei felt saddened and a ear fell down her eye as she rub it away with her hand.

'So what are you planning to do?' Lin Wei asked Dante.

'We'll train Kal and make sure he won't fall in the hands of the wrong people. We will also aid him on his hunts so he can subjugate as many monsters and make sure he'll raise a rank every reawakening and until he becomes a force to be reckoned with.'ante said to Lin Wei.

'Isn't that too straightforward? What if he becomes arrogant and becomes strong enough that we won't be much of a help to him anymore? What if he'll act rashly because he has the strength to shake the world?' Lin Wei asked.

'That's why we are the right people that should help him grow. I'll educate him about how this world works, teach him the manners of a good hunter and be an inspiration to everyone. When he becomes D-rank, I'll ask the chairman to make Kal a sponsored student to the renowned Hunter's Academy and there, he should be able to learn much more and raise his pouring plus have you forgotten about one of our team member's betrayal?' Dante said to Lin Wei.

'Gluten Organization!' Lin Wei exclaimed. Gluten Organization is one of the dark organizations that is compromises of hunters with criminal records. It is still unclear to what their goal is but it is believe that they are apart of a bigger sect that serves to rule an unnamed god.

'If we can find out why he sided to that organization, we might be able to free him or at best, destroy the entire organization.' Dante spoke to Lin Wei in a serious look.

'...' Lin silently nodded as she swallowed her nervous saliva. Kal saw that there was a brief silence between them so he had to break out.

"What's the matter?" Kal asked.

"Nothing, you should just go back to your apartment and we'll tell you what you'll be doing in the future." Dante said to Kal. Kal didn't bother to ask and simply left.

"So, how should we make him a D-rank? It might still be hard for him to fight monsters alone but what if we assign some-" Before Dante could finish his words, Lin Wei cut him off.

"Now, that I think about it, the power he displayed was surely of D-rank." Lin Wei said to Dante with a questioned face.

"What are you saying? When we sparred, he definitely displayed the power of an E-rank. Even his reawakening data was displayed as E-rank?" Dante replied confusingly.

"No, I was sure of it. I've fought lots of hunters and I can tell their power output in their combat and what Kal showed to me was in the level of an elite D-rank." Lin Wei responded to Dante.

"Wait, so does that mean, he faked the re-awakening and purposely dropped himself to E-rank when in reality, he had jumped to two levels? It should be hard to control your amplified strength with his level, even you who has maximum control of your body can only suppress to the bottleneck of an E-rank." Dante said in disbelief.

"Let's not forget he has an outstanding talent, he probably did that due to Dontrelle since he knows that Dontrelle was still an E-rank." Lin Wei said.

"That could be it, no wonder he was able to kill that D-rank mutant boss by himself. He was just hiding his powers so Dontrelle won't know." Dante replied to Lin Wei.

"So, what shall we do with him?" Lin Wei asked.

"He has shown us that he has the talent to be able to learn about any knowledge , he has a body perfect for martial arts in any category, but he is still lacking in formal education so for now, we should teach him as much as we can to give him a jumpstart when he goes to the Hunter's Academy."

******************

Kal was walking in the streets of the shelter, he watch the busy stores crowded with hunters as they went and go to buy and sell the things they needed.

'Today seems as busy as the usual.' Kal said to himself. He continued on his walk back to his apartment when suddenly, the window panel popped up right infront of his view.

"..!" Kal's face gleamed in shock after reading the contents of the quest.

'Knowing the difficulty of the quest, the rewards should be extraordinary but the penalty is too much. Even if I deny the quest, I can't since there no 'NO' option given.' Kal clicked his tongue and thought about his decision deeply.

"Fine, I'll just have to be careful." Kal proceed to press the YES button. A pillar of light struck down to him like lightning and his body flashed with a loud bang leaving no trace of him in the spot. The hunters nearby were quickly alerted by the loud noise and saw nothing in the scene and the hunters guarding Kal from afar were shocked at what had occurred.

"What the hell just happened?" A hunter asked in a brief shock.

"He just disappeared after getting struck by that lightning!" Another hunter exclaimed.

"D-does that mean he's dead?" The hunter asked.

"If it was just a normal lightning, he'd at the very least get knocked out unconscious, but this lightning struck at the bright of the afternoon with no news of any thunderstorms, caused Kal's entire body to vanish in the air." A hunter said as a swallowed his dry saliva.

"What should we tell Dante?" He asked.

"This is no normal occurrence, I think this is done by someone who's targeting Kal. And that someone would be very powerful." The hunter respond a sweat fell to his forehead.

"Let's tell boss about this." He said as he hastened back to the shelter hall.

"Yes, we should." The hunter followed.

**************

Slowly Kal opened his eyes. He immediately found himself in a dark room. He couldn't tell if the room was big or small but he didn't dare to move so he stood still from his position sharpening his sense in any case that danger may come.

'Where am I?' He asked himself. He looked around his vicinity and even with his night vision eyes, he couldn't see anything, only pitch darkness that spread to infinity.

[PLEASE CHOOSE YOUR DIFFICULTY]

[Easy] [Normal] [Hard] [Expert]

As the window panel popped up, he was given 4 options, the easy mode which was dyed in green, normal mode which was dyed in blue, hard mode which was dyed in orange, and expert mode which was dyed in red.

"Just like a game, if I choose the easy mode, I'll get common rewards while if I choose the expert mode, I'll get the best rewards." Kal said. He had a deep thought in mind and decided the best course he should get.

"Let's choose the hard mode, that should be at my level expertise." As Kal was about to press the [Hard] icon on the screen tab, the window panel suddenly glitched and moved sideways which prompt Kal to press the [Expert] icon.

Ting~

[YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE EXPERT MODE!]

YOU'LL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOUR DESTINATION.

"Wait, there's something wrong here!" Realizing that the system may have purposely wished to make him press expert mode, Kal was both infuriated and shocked. His body soon was enveloped by a red light and flashed away out of existence.

Shaaaa!

He found himself in a wide colleseum, it was an empty arena where only him at the center of the stage was standing. A window panel then popped up in his front.

Ting~

[MAIN QUEST]

Finish all the stages with each, you'll be using different types of weapons and must finish the requirements to pass the tests. You must accumulate points, the higher the points the better the rewards is at the end of the tests.

-points can be acquired by killing monsters

-points will be given as a reward after each passing stage

-points can be used to buy items in the store

-if unable to fight or is killed in action, points will be deducted

-you can choose to retry the stage but must pay with points

-if points goes below zero, quest will fail

"That sounds easy to understand but what exactly are the tests?" Kal asked but soon the window panel disappeared and reappeared but now, two axes appeared in his hand, each weighing as much as 5 kilos and as half a meter long.

Ting~

[1ST TEST HAS COMMENCED!]

10 ogres will appear every 5 minutes or after all of the ogres have been killed and you must finish all the requirements on the designated time.

-Defeat 500 ogres (0/500)

-Behead 100 ogres (0/100)

-Obtain 30 ogre tusk (0/100) (10% chances of dropping the tusk after the ogre has died)

-Finish the test within 5 hours

"What the hell? Is this?" Kal exclaimed in shock. Soon the ground trembled as the huge entrances that circulate around the arena summoned huge monsters.

Chik!

The ogres screamed their battle cry when they met their opponent, Kal. They were 2 meters tall, bulky muscles, green skin, long tusks, wore a tattered brown cloth to cover their privates and welded a giant wooden bat that stretch out as long as their arm.

"Shit."
