After mopping up the remnant of the enemy forces. Still fighting on the beaches. We were ordered to join the third division as supports.
We were told that after this, we're going to attack a defensive position up a hill called hill 499.
With troops around only 112 men from the original 300 men army. We were to take and hold hill 499 until next week. That's when the reinforcements should arrive.
Before assaulting up the hill. We were given a little time to catch our breath.
Collins and I met up with the remnant of the 2nd division whose still combat effective. Which brings our group to a total of 12 men.
Night came, the moon shines bright into the night. The stars were clouded from our sight by clouds of smoke and burning vehicle.
I decided to check my icon. I found out that it not only directs my movement. Marks our objective, gives me my ammo count and also checks my health incase I was injured.
It was pretty useful for keeping my inventory in check. And it makes it easier to navigate the battlefield.
The next morning came without much of a scene. We woke up in the morning with barely a wink of sleep. Knowing that the enemy might attack in the middle of the night. So we had to take shifts on watching the camp at night.
We stock up on supplies and ammo. And rallied with the third division. The commander gave us a briefing about the plan to take hill 499.
We will the divide our forces into six groups to attack them from 5 different sides. When the leader pops smoke the entire army will charge up the hill. And attack it with every thing they've got.
We expect heavy resistance and tight defences. But thankfully there won't be an bombing raid on the hill. And there will only be a few half track.
But besides that the enemy is numbered at around 50 to 70 men. All armed to the teeth with machine guns, mortars, Panzer Faust, and a few snipers.
After finishing the deep brief. Every one has gone out to prepare. My team was assigned to attack from the South West. There is a mine field on our side of the hill.
Which means it will be less defended. Than the other points. We were ordered to walk clear through the mine field and attack the enemy bunkers from the back.
Thus we set out for the flanks. Suddenly The other groups shouted and suddenly ran up the hill without the commander. And inspiring the other units to do a reckless charge up the hill.
We decided to use the cover of the trees to sneak up the hill behind the enemy defense. Then support our comrades fighting through the front.
After walking through the dense woods. We arrived at the first bunker pinning our men with machine gun fire.
I quickly brought 3 men with me to attack the bunker from behind. They took firing position behind a wooden crate. As I plant the breaching charge on the metal door.
I rushed to the sides of the bunker and duck behind the wall. As the bunker door explode the men rushed in and a shot down the enemy's inside. Disabling the machine gun the other groups finally moved up the trench and up the hill.
Collins ordered his group to join the assault up the hill . Cutting through barbwire. While doging enemy fire along the way.
They made it up to the second defense line. But something was wrong the other groups attacking the hill wasn't present.
My guess is that they were still stuck at the first line of defence. They weren't able to make a break through on their own. Without suffering a significant casualties.
So I decided to take my men around the hill to take out the rest of the bunkers. To help the other group up the hill. Whilst Collins will continue to support the first group on breaking through the second line.
After securing the other 7 bunkers. The other groups managed to climb up the hill. And The first group up managed to get through the second line.
Suddenly a Mechanised group appear. Spearheading the enemy counter attack. They broke our through our formations and continue to wreak havoc.
I jumped to the ground. As their machines guns ripped my men apart. The driver, drove the half truck over me.
I snuck down and waited for it to cross me. I jumped behind the truck and killed the driver and the gunner inside the half truck with my pistol.
I immediately drove the half truck towards the enemy and rammed it into their vehicle. Disabling it and run over a few of their troops.
I screamed toward the troops.
"forward men,attack push through and destroy them men !!!" they immediately followed me to get back to the fight.
I spearhead the attack from inside the half truck. And used it to cover their advance. While using the machine gun to shot down the enemy effectively diminishing their numbers and moral.
I proceeded to rally what's left of our attack force. To destroy the enemies. And then we managed to take the hill, despite fierce enemy resistance.
We gathered in the radar bunker at the peak of the hill. To collect what's left of our forces. And to count the casualties, We had received during the attack.
We grabbed any weapons, ammunitions, and explosive pieces we could muster.We managed to get a few anti armour rockets, but will be enough to destroy the enemies vehicles ? Because we knew now we need to defend this hill from the enemy. If not all of that death and battle we've been through it will be all for naught.
I managed to meet up with Collins and what's left of our team. We in total have suffered 80 casualties just to take the hill. We have secured a victory over this strategic position but at what cost.
