It was almost a dusky midnight then. The sky became completely
cloudy as if it was painted in black. A small piece of cigar was
suddenly thrown on the ground by somebody. The half-burnt cigar
was still emitting smoke. In such a dingy night, no object was
visible, except the hue of the cigar. At a visible distance, a
nameplate was showing the existence of a bar – the "Highway
Bar".
Inside the bar …
"It‟s enough, Sir! Don‟t take further as you have already
consumed a lot," said the bearer to Walter. Walter is a
businessman by profession. Despite being a scholar in psychology,
he settled himself as a businessman. It was the midnight, so the
bearer insisted Walter to leave the bar at the earliest. Walter
stepped out of the bar staggeringly as he became fully drunkard.
He had parked his car on the other side of the road, headlights of
which were switched on. When the bearer saw that the car's lights
were on, he tried to anticipate that Walter might have forgotten to
turn them off. Suddenly, he heard a strange noise that dragged his
attention, and he immediately turned his head to the left to find out
the source of the noise. He got excited when he saw some rusted
iron rods falling down on the ground, which were supporting the
other end of the bar. The bearer questioned himself with a surprise
how had the rods fallen down. He slowly walked into the bar
shrugging his shoulders in anxiety.
As Walter had already been in stupor, he staggeringly moved
toward his car. However grievingly, he got into his car and started
driving.
The midnight had already been over as it was around 1.30
AM. The atmosphere remained fully dusky. Meantime, it started
raining cats and dogs. Walter was driving his car with much
difficulty in that weather.
"Lift … Lift …!" shouted someone. Listening to the voice,
Walter stopped his car suddenly and found an unknown person
asking for help. As Walter was not in a fully conscious state,
unhesitatingly he allowed the anonymous person get into his car. It
was lightening, and the loud sound of thunders was frightening.
Under lightening hue, Walter could faintly be able to see the
person in the car.
"Stop …! Stop …! I must get down immediately," said the
mysterious person in a restless manner. The vehicle stopped near a
big tunnel. The person flew about the place immediately after
showing his gratitude. Walter again started moving. It was quite
dark, and Walter was struggling to move forward in the dark.
Suddenly, he discovered himself in the tunnel. However, with
much difficulties, Walter could manage to come out of the horrible
tunnel. After getting relieved, he stopped the car near a tree to light
a cigar. Walter was fully drenched in that heavy opposing rain and
was trying to reduce his drowsiness.
"Oh God! It is bleeding from my leg? Was it a creature's
bite?" Anxiously he was seeing blood, coming out from one of his
legs.
Suddenly, he heard a loud noise … It was surprising to hear
about. Some tinkling sound, like of water probably, was heard
again. There could be a small water stream nearby, which might be
flowing to a valley. While Walter was guessing these, the rain
started pouring heavily again. It was a dense forest all-around
without any sign of human existence nearby. A roar of thunderbolt
suddenly left Walter shaken up with fear and anxiety of something
horrible to come next. In the lightening of the thunderbolt, he
found a terrible resemblance at the other end of the tunnel. A
horrible shadow of a person putting a black hat and holding a
king's bar on his left hand appeared. It appeared that the person
was following him secretly and spying on him.
"At such a dreadful night, what the hell is he doing in the
tunnel?" –Walter asked himself. Walter gradually got into his car
and drove sharp to get out of that fear. The rain had stopped that
time. While Walter was passing through the dense forest in
moonlight, he saw someone lying down on his way.
"Who are you? Disappear from my way! Hey man! Are you a
deaf?" – shouted Walter, honking the car horn loudly.
It seemed like he was out of his balance that made it difficult for
him to walk in a straight line. Walter got down from his car and
walked toward the person who was lying on the road. He was lying
upside down and was fully smeared with blood all around his
body.
"Oh my God! Someone has killed him brutally," – said Walter to
himself. Taking the support of his foot, he turned around the
person to see who he was. After seeing the face, Walter almost
broke down and was astonished. He was the same person whom he
had given a lift a few minutes ago.
Walter walked toward his car out of fear. When he sat inside the
car, he could see a red glowing hue from the shade of the trees and
heard a sudden strange noise coming from a strange creature. All
of a sudden, Walter accelerated his car to its full speed in order to
flee from the place as he could feel the uninviting perils to fall in
his way.
Turning to the left, he found it was written on the board:
"Welcome! You are entering New D-Street"
Though it was the dead hours of the night, Walter somehow
reached his place safely. He drove his car to the main gate. The
colony watchman, Michael, came to him and addressed,
"You are too late, Sir…. Never be such late again … because
the way you came through is not safe at all. Many tales are tied
with it, especially regarding the tunnel. No one really dares to
come through it. You please be careful from now" said Michael
allowing Walter into the street, and he finally walked to his watch
house.
