Chapter 5 - Gift

Abandoned. Again.

The room around him was absolutely dark, he couldn't even see the difference between having his eyes opened or closed. It was a weird situation. Charlie tried looking around but it all seemed like a black void, I was hard to know which direction he came from, where he was, even up and down started to mix in his mind.

And with the darkness came emptiness.

As an orphan, some of the most horrible emotions came to Charlie in situations where he felt abandoned, left behind, alone, or any other scenario where he would not fit in. That is why he enjoyed being around Jhonny so much, maybe not the only reason, but a big reason nonetheless.

When he was with Jhonny he belonged, he had a family. A lot of people don't realize the importance of family, family is a place where you belong. For many, family is the group of people you are born into, for others it is the people you meet along the way, this was Charlie. He had found a family in Jhonny, Mr. Meyer, the farmworkers, even the animals on the farm.

Now, in a single morning he had been forcefully separated from all of them, the sequence of events started to slowly wash over Charlie as he laid on the cold floor. What had happened with Mr. Meyer? What where those explosions? What was Jhonny and Mr. Meyer not telling him? Why did they leave him alone? Why...? Why...? Why...?

Many questions where running thru young Charlie's mind. He was hyperventilating on the floor, it was hard to breath, very hard. He had to make a great effort to take every breath, the walls, the walls started to close in on him. He was about to be crushed.

"Ahhhhhh" Charlie cried "Why! Why! JHONNY! MR. MEYER!"

"Charlie, when you don't know what to do keep moving forward, when it seems like there is no solution keep moving forward, life is always moving; if you move with it you will find an answer." Mr. Meyer's words came to Charlie's mind.

"Move forward..." Charlie repeated to himself, he took a deep breath and stood up.

Suddenly the whole room seemed to go back to normal. It was all in Charlie's mind.

It took Charlie a moment to get a hold on himself. He took a few steps back and felt the wall where he came from pressing against his back.

"ok, this is good" said Charlie to himself. He then turned around and started running his hands around the wall. It only took him a few steps to find the a wall to his right.

"Alright, if I follow this wall I might be able to get out of here" he kept talking to himself as if to keep the negative emotions away. When he looked in the direction the wall lead he was surprised to see a faint red hue ahead, the red coloration was barely visible from where he was.

"There..." Charlie started walking towards the light. As he approached the other end he understood why it was so dark, the material around him seemed different than the room he was previously in. The walls where also perfectly polished but the material looked like a a thick dark crystal. The color of the walls was a solid black and the walls where cold to the touch, the temperature on the room was comfortable compared to the hot a humid space of the previous hall.

The material on the walls did not reflect the red light, on the contrary, the light was absorbed by them. The hallway was about 200 feet long, on the other side a faintly lit room was visible.

Charlie slowly walked towards the room, when he finally entered he noticed a single small wooden chest about the size of a shoebox placed on top of a stone pedestal.

Charlie was currently within what seemed to be an old room, dust was accumulated on all the surfaces.

He slowly moved towards the stone platform.

The wooden box seemed very simple, the wood seemed to be treated and polishes but no special decorations covered it. A thick layer of dust covered the platform, oddly enough, the wooden box was clean like it was just placed there a moment ago.

When he opened the box he saw a flat fist sized red stone with a symbol engraved on it, the symbol was an eye within a doorframe. The stone was attached to a delicate silver colored metal mount.

Charlie hesitated for a moment.

"Whatever, if Mr. Meyer and Jhonny brought me here it cant be that bad" he extended his hand and picked up the stone.

When he pulled it up he noticed two things, first, the stone was practically weightless. Second, the mount was attached to a similarly delicate chain of the same silver color.

"A necklace?"

Charlie examined the necklace, it was beautiful. The stone and the metal around it looked very expensive.

Charlie waited for a moment but nothing happened. The room was completely silent, the ethereal light continued illuminated the room seemingly coming from nowhere. He examined the room and noticed that it was just a large square, it seemed like the only way in or our was the hallway he had just walked in thru.

"Maybe I have to put it on?"

Charlie passed the chain around his neck, the chain was very long which made the stone hang around his belly button.

"What now?"

Ptssssss

Suddenly the chain started heating up.

"Aaaaaargh!" Charlie felt his skin was burning, he tried taking of the necklace but it the burning pain on his hands was too much it felt like holding a hot coil. His old clothes started burning under the necklace and the room got filled with smoke.

"What is this?!" Charlie was in so much pain he couldn't hold it, his vision started fading, the pain was too much to bare. After a few more moments his vision darkened.

Charlie had passed out and dropped to the floor.

Everything went black for an unknown amount of time, it was a weird state tho. He was still conscious, just drifting in nothingness.

"New user identified, initializing protocols" a female voice ringed in Charlies head. Some information started displaying in front of Charlie's eyes:

Charlie looked around but couldn't see no one. "What is this place?" Charlie thought to himself.

"This is your neural interphase" responded a female voice.

"Can you hear my thoughts?" Charlie was more and more confused.
