Chapter 18 - The New Normal

Third Person's P.O.V

Its been over a month since Adelaide arrived in Amalfi. She spent so much of her time putting her plans into action that she became unaware of her suffering. She had now come to terms with everything that had taken place. It surely took a lot of courage on her part to come to the point in life that she was now on and she was relieved to have things work in her favour.

At present Adelaide stood in front of her new workplace 'Envisage'. Her probatory period starts today. As excited as she was to start with her dream job, she felt nervous and unsure of whether she could do it right.

"Breathe Adel, you got this!" -She spoke to herself as she stood in front of the company's entrance. Her navy blue coat and pants made her feel confident and ready to face her job as she closed her eyes for a few seconds and soon walked into the building. She felt her heart hammer in her chest as the numbers on the elevator's display kept increasing. She was pulled out of her trance when a loud 'ding!' reached her ears. The display screen showed the number 'seven' giving Adel her cue to get out.

Upon leaving the elevator she was approached by a tall confident lady who wore a brown checkered suit and her dark hair was tied up in a pony. Her aura was so powerful and elegant that Adelaide couldn't help but be drawn to her.

"Good morning Adelaide! You sure are right on time, I'm Gemma Greco, your immediate supervisor." -she spoke and at the same time brought her hand out.

Taking her hand and shaking it with a smile Adelaide introduced herself.

As the introductions ended, Adelaide was guided towards her office in the central room. After receiving a few general instructions about the working and flow of authority she was handed a few unaccepted proposals undertaken by the company in the past with the task of studying them in relation to the company. Her first post was with the home decor team.

After settling down in her designated place, Adelaide started setting up her desk and soon started reviewing the files that were left behind by Gemma.

It's hard to describe where and how time flies by when you are doing something you truly enjoy and love. That is how Adelaide felt. She was into reading the files and analysing the designs that she didn't realise her supervisor calling out to her.

"Adelaide!" -Gemma spoke while tapping on her shoulder.

Surprised by the sudden contact Adelaide looks up to see her supervisor.

"Yes? Is there something I can do for you?" -Adelaide replied hesitantly.

"Yes. Come with me."

"Where to?"

"The cafeteria. It's lunchtime." -Gemma replied with a smile.

"Already?!" -Adelaide was surprised to see the time by her watch.

"Yes. Now come on. The entire team is waiting to meet you."

The cafeteria was a lot different from the working cabin. The bustle was for different reasons. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the company and living in the moment. It had been a while since Adelaide had experienced such evident laughter and joy. Gemma guided her to where the home decor team was seated for lunch after attending to some on-site work. The team in itself wasn't too big. Including Adelaide and Gemma, there were only but five people in the team with Gemma as their head.

"Hi, I'm Aria Ricci" -A petite bright girl with auburn hair spoke first. Followed by her came the shrill voice of her twin who had cinnamon hair.

"And I'm Mia Ricci, It's a pleasure to meet you." -she spoke with a smile.

"I'm Augusto Berlusconi."

Reaching out her hand for a handshake, Adelaide smiled at Augusto who looked intimidating without a smile but surely gave the vibes of a cinnamon roll.

Getting along with the team wasn't as hard as Adelaide assumed it to be. Within the span of a few minutes, she felt like she already belonged there with the rest. The work-related topics that felt endless seemed so interesting that they instantly demanded everyone's undue attention. And just like that, lunchtime ended before it could properly start and everyone went on with their respective work.

Soon the sunset on its horizon marked the end of a working day and it was time to wrap up.

As Adelaide was exiting the building with her belongings she heard Augusto speak up from beside her.

"Are you free tonight?" -Augusto spoke taking Adelaide by surprise. As they blankly stared at each other Augusto realised his message went across wrong. In perplexion, he spoke again.

"Uhh... I-I didn't mean it that way. It's for your welcome party. Gemma wanted me to ask when you're free so that we can have a team dinner together and like you know celebrate..."

He spoke trailing off his sentence towards the end as he was flustered.

Passing it off as a joke Adelaide giggled and replied, "Is Saturday night good?"

"Sounds good. I'll let Gemma know. Well then, good work today. Goodbye." -Augusto spoke while waving at Adelaide and walking away in the direction opposite to her destination.

Adelaide looked at the board that read 'Tackles' in front of her. She felt proud of how the cafe was coming about. The wooden doors stood tall and shone brightly as they provided the sense of welcoming needed for every upcoming customer. The cafe's work was almost done. Only the last pieces of furniture were yet to arrive, with which the cafe would be ready for launch. Entering the cafe Adelaide realised how much the vibe of the place had improved. Although without any tables or chairs for customers, the cafe still looked a lot comforting and inviting with its polished wooden floor, its marble counter and glass bakery cum brewing spot. The crockeries were set beautifully on top of each other. Smiling in contentment, Adelaide turned around to face the scenic walls.

The painting of the cherry blossoms blooming and floating in the air perfectly contrasted the creme wall. Her thoughts were interrupted by Mr. Ricardo.

"Thank you for all that you have made possible. I truly can't express how happy I am to be able to continue with this place." -He spoke as he took Adelaide's palm in his and smiled at her.

"No need to thank me Mr. Ricardo We're simply completing our dreams together."

"Yes, yes. If you don't mind me asking, what inspired you to name the cafe 'tackles'?" -he spoke with wonder and awkwardness as they let go off each others hands.

Adelaide smiled and replied while looking at the painting.

"I just wanted people to be able to overcome everything that's thrown at them and face their struggles head on. After all, a cup of coffee sure helps people to recover like titans. It keeps us going and helps us tackle our problems, whatever they may be."

"That's a lovely way to put it. Never thought it would motivate to do better at the job." -Mr. Riccardo spoke with a smile on his face.

"Ain't that great news!" -Adelaide chirped.

"Speaking of news. I'd like to conduct the event maybe next week, I believe the cafe will be all set by then and we could do it after a few days of actual sales."

Adelaide spoke after a momentary pause. "Oh that! Is there anything you would like me to do? As I mentioned you're free to do it as you please but don't be shy in asking for help."

"No,no. I've checked a good company for it, I thought I should let you know of it before finalizing the dates."

"That's truly very thoughtful of you. It's getting late, should we head out?"

"Well yes, lets do that."

And with that Adelaide's new normal had begun.
