Chapter 5 - Cell Mates

The guards all let out a loud laugh and one of them said ,"That's right and it will be your tomb". "Not likely", I rebutted still grinning from ear to ear. An older man who had long grey hair around the side of his head, but a bald spot on the top, and a long grey beard stepped through the middle of the guards. He was wearing a long white robe with blue trimming and long golden tassels on the sleeves and the base hem. "Greater protection", the old man uttered as he raised his hand at my cell. A jade green magic circle was brought forth from his hand, and the bars of my cell, and walls shined the same green. Without another word the old man hobbled back down the long hallway towards the exit. "Be nice to your cell mate, we will be back tomorrow to take you out for some exercise", one of the guardsmen said as they also walked towards the exit, dragging my old cell out with them.

I hadn't noticed before but in every cell down the long hall had monsters and beasts in each one. Wolves, bears, lions, tigers, goblins, and one cell even had a small ogre. None of them were particularly high in level. The goblins held the lowest level of five, while the ogre held the highest, other than myself, of fourteen. As I inspected the cells I heard the beating of a heart just behind me. It's sounded as if whatever was there was just waking up. I turned around to see the only human in these holding cells. He was filthy, covered in blood and dirt from head to toe. His hair was long and brown unwashed and matted. He smelled like urine, sweat, and excrement. His status tag shown that he was a level eleven thief, with the title of murderer. As he opened his eyes from his nap he caught sight of my devilish look. He let out a scream that would put a small girl's to shame. "What are you? Stay away from me!". He whined as he curled up in the corner of the cell. "How did you get that title?", I asked the man. "I was caught by a servant of the duke's while I was stealing some of his money", the man now holding his hands in front of his eyes to keep from seeing my demonic face. "Boy am I hungry. They didn't feed me on my long trip here, nor did they leave me with anything to satiate my appetite". I exclaimed with a pause. "I guess you will have to do". In a flash I was holding the man up by palming his face with my left claw. "No!! Please god no!!", were the thief's final words as I sank my fangs into his jugular vein. The man went limp after a few seconds, and the last beat of his heart made a light thud then whimpered out as if someone had blown out a candle.

"How exhilarating", I though to myself as the last drops of blood ran down my throat. The man was now little more than withered skin and bones. Then I heard it. Something I hadn't heard in many years. "Activating evolution!". The same loud, clear, soothing voice from before. "Awakening true origin vampire. Thirst for human blood acquired. As the origin of vampires all weaknesses are void. Elemental resistance acquired. Toxic and poison resistance acquired. Dark and holy resistance acquired. Level significantly increased. Raising level to twenty. New title acquired, vampire lord. As vampire lord you may now take on a more human appearance. All skills deal increased damage. Health regeneration has been upgraded to greater regeneration. Quick step has been replaced with spacial movement. New blood magic spells acquired blood beam, rain of blood, and blood manipulation acquired. Evolution into origin vampire lord complete".

My wings reseeded into my back, my claws formed into what looked more like hands, though my fingernails were still sharpened to a point. The veins that once bulged outward faded away, and my large fangs pushed back into my gums until they had the appearance of slightly larger k9s. The one thing that didn't change was the color of my eyes. The only obvious sign my body gave off to be aware of. I felt slightly tired after my evolution was completed, so I decided to test out my skills while taking a nap. Using spatial movement I walked up the cell wall, and onto the ceiling. Now hanging upside down I pushed my wing back out from the skin that hid them away, wrapped them around my entire body, and instantly fell asleep.
