Chapter 11 - Chapter eleven | self-absorbed princess

Conway PV

Damn! All I think about is what transpired last night. I didn't get a wink of sleep. Last night's events were fucking disturbing. Ouma's (granny in Afrikaans) sudden illness and Diako's drama on the other hand.

Diako did seem a little morose during dinner. No wonder she only brusquely answered when Boity and mom spoke to her. I just brushed it off as her usually saccharine self.

I have always thought of her as too sentimental.

Now mom also has to worry about her too.

Beginning of memory

Damn! This is one hell of a dessert. Boity sure knows her way around the kitchen. She's definitely a cooking goddess.

I've got to have a another slice. This is by far the best Swirl raisin bread I've ever had.

She's got quite a sense of humor, a conversationalist as well. Can't say the same about her snobbish niece though. The Princess is so self absorbed, she hasn't said a word to anyone.

Why is she even here if we bore her?

I refuse to even acknowledge her presence at this table. I won't spare her a glance, well not tonight anyway.

It's embarrassing enough that I got hard from being within her proximity. I blame it on the past weeks without sex. Hope I'm not too addicted to pussy. It's preposterous to even think Diako could affect me.

My eyes betray me and look across the table for the first time tonight. And typical Diako is withdrawn as per usual. Her breathing is rapid and small beads of sweat trace her forehead.

What's up with her?

I brush it off and start digging in on my delicious dessert. What'd Boity put in here?

"Didi, sweetie are you okay? Boity do something she's trembling!" Mom's distraught-laced voice pulls me out of my trance.

Dread washes over me when I take in her appearance. Her eyes are bloodshot and drops of sweat run down her face as she rapidly quivers. She's clutching her chest like it hurts.

"She's hyperventilating, Diako my baby, look at me. Keep your eyes on me baby. Breathe!"

Boity runs to her side and turns her so they're face to face. Mom starts panicking and her phone starts ringing. She takes it and heads out.

In all this I'm still glued to my seat, still too appalled to react. Everything is happening so fast it feels surreal. Boity makes her count slowly to even out her breathing.

Is this how a hyperventilation looks like?

Snap out of it you dork! Do something!

Water! That usually helps right?

I run to the kitchen and bump into mom with tear bloodshot eyes. I can tell she's been crying. I give her a comforting hug and she starts weeping.

"Everything is just falling apart Conway, mom just got admitted to the hospital."

"What's wrong with her?"

She detaches herself from our embrace and shakes her head. I knew there was more to her crying than this Diako thing.

"Is Didi okay?"  She wipes her tears and acts like she didn't just breakdown in front of me. She always does this, act strong.

"I don't know ma, I'm just getting her some water."

"Let me go see if I can help.", she doesn't maintain eye contact with me as she ignores my question and walks away.

I fill a glass with water and rush back to the dining room. Diako furrows her brows and scans her surroundings. I hand her the glass but she bolts past me and runs out of the house.

I put the glass on the table and rush after her. I feel my heart drop to my stomach and terror surges through me when I take in what's before me.

She runs across the street just as  car speeds towards her. The dramatic horn sound is enough to drive me completely to the edge.

Phew, that was a close one!

End memory

I can't help but keep wondering what caused her hyperventilation. Was it maybe because of me? Damn! I should have known better than to speak to her like I did last night.

Or perhaps I should have tried engaging in a conversation with her. Maybe she didn't want to be there.

Ugh this is so hard man!

Why do I even care? I shouldn't be analyzing everything.I'll just keep my distance like I've been doing lately. She's got way too much drama. I've got to mind my own business.

I have a lot on my plate as it is. It turns out my ouma's condition is critical. Mom left immediately after Diako's incident.

Now I have to look after my two cousins Sara-Deen and her little brother, Jordan.

"Conway! Someone's at the door asking for you.", Sara-Deen yells from the living room.

It must be Aurileo, I told him about my ouma last night.
