April Morrison, in her new apartment at seven o'clock on a Thursday morning in early January, was all dressed up for an interview. Her apartment building was the tallest she had ever seen. It consisted of one tiny room with a kitchen half the size of the room and a bathroom.
April had a breath taking beautiful face and she wore no makeup except for some pale-pink lipstick ( as she didn't have money to buy any). Her hair, which was a tawny gold, cascaded down her back to her elbow, thick and tangled, making her look like Rebecca of sunny Brook farm. She had big blue eyes and freckles on her delicately sculptured nose.
She had no job, but she sure as hell wasn't going back home to live a little princess life, she left the moment she had the chance to. She had always wanted to be an actress but her mum and sisters didn't like it. After all, there were thousands of pretty girls with long gold hair who wanted to go to Hollywood, they told her. She was going for a job interview (though at the moment not for acting).
It was a huge plush office with a soft thick carpet on the floor, a black leather sofa and rows of bookcases on bookshelves. In front of the wall of Windows was a great desk. In this desk chair, with his feet crossed on the blotter and his chin on his chest, was Mr Gustavo, snoring gently. She stood in the door way not knowing what to do. Mr Gustavo snorted in his sleep, tossed his head furiously like a dog shaking itself and woke up.
"what? what?"he said
"I'm sorry I disturbed you"she said timidly
"Oh I take a rest now and then",He looked at her closely"come over here"
"You want a Job?"He asked when she came in
She nodded.
"What's your name?"
"April Morrison"
"Do you know that for this job,50 girls have been interviewed".
"No Sir"
"What do you want? to be an editor, get famous?"
"I... don't know yet"
His brows drew together"What makes you think you have more of a right to be here than any of those 49 girls".
She put her hands behind her back so he wouldn't see them trembling.
"I don't know sir"she said"I haven't met them"
"What makes you think you ought to be here instead of say a sales girl in a dress shop.
At that moment she would rather have gone to a dress shop, but she said bravely"I don't think I'd be a very good salesgirl".
"Why?"
"Because I'm not interested in it"
"And you're interested in books?"
"Yes"
He laid back, put his hands behind his head laughed.
