'Huh? What?' Pete woke up suddenly with a jump. He glanced over to his sleeping wife beside to check if he had woken her up. To his relief, she was still sleeping soundly.
Did he just sense someone using an ability across the country? No, this feeling was different. It was a new person using his or her ability. It also seems like it was an Immortal Grade ability. Holy shit. If it was just one of the rest using their abilities the feeling would not be anything much. Definitely not enough to wake him up. The feeling was just for a second though, or it might have been him dreaming. He was not sure if he had been dreaming or not.
The last time he felt this way was 2 years ago. Upon tracking down the source of the ability, he felt disappointed when he found it. The ability had manifested in a 90 year old woman with dementia living at home with a caregiver who comes by daily. This old lady had Telekinesis.
The confused caregiver came to work one day to find belongings and small pieces of furniture thrown all over the house, while the calm and oblivious old woman sat in her wheelchair and told him about the delicious steak she had yesterday, apparently 50 years ago.
Thinking it was a burglar at first, he almost called the police. However, after a quick look around, there were no signs of forced entry and the old lady's valuables were safe and accounted for.
The next week, the even more confused and terrified caregiver witnessed belongings and furniture flying all over the house by themselves, with the old lady laughing and smiling at the flying objects. Believing that there was a ghost, or her being possessed by an evil spirit, he bolted out of the door and never went back again.
Luckily, Pete managed to track her down and got the contact number of the caregiver before it happened. Unlike the rest of the people who witnessed such similar events, Pete did not even bother telling him to keep it a secret. Simply because nobody would believe him. In addition, he was the only witness present there. To persuade him to keep it a secret would mean questions and explanations, something which Pete would gladly avoid if he could.
Unfortunately, the old lady passed away from side effects of using her ability the next day. Her body was much too old and frail to handle the effects of an untrained Immortal Grade ability.
He reached for his phone. There were no calls or texts from Leah or anyone. He scrolled the news but there was nothing abnormal. If there was such a person, he or she would not be able to control or keep his or her abilities a secret yet at the start. If that happens, his phone would be ringing non stop. Controlling one's ability takes time and practice, as well as minimising the side effects of it. That was how strange things happen but the police would not believe it. They would always find a logical explanation.
His search for people with Immortal Grade abilities must have been driving him nuts for him to even dream about it. Feeling confused, he fell back to sleep.
It was 10 in the morning when Alycia woke. She sat up in bed groggily, recalling last night's events. Jumping up in shock, she ran over to her computer. She hasn't been able to shut it down since she was so tired yesterday. The $20 000 was still in her account.
'Huh. Must be a bank error.' she mumbled. The bank would probably call her a few days later when they realised.
But hang on, what was that nosebleed yesterday? It was so sudden and came with an instant bout of fatigue. It was the first time she experienced anything like this. Something was definitely wrong. She felt normal now though. Probably might have to schedule a medical check up if it happens again.
On the bus to her shift at the restaurant bar, she contemplated what had happened last night. The strangest thing was the nosebleed. It was so random and it happened right after the $20 000 had happened. There seems to be a link between these two incidents but it was highly impossible that such a thing would happen in real life. These things only happen in drama and movies.
Unable to come to a conclusion, she shrugged the whole matter off and decided to check on the money again later that night.
It was a crazy day at work. A drunk and angry customer decided to create a ruckus by throwing some beer bottles around. The police had to be called in and Alycia had to clean up shards of glass from the floor thereafter. No idea what got him so angry.
It was 1 in the morning when she finally got home. Wasting no time, she checked on the money in her bank account on her desktop. There it was, exactly as it had been last night.
