Chapter 1 - Mouse Evolution

Underground in a monster den a creature opened its eyes for the first time, it's awakened mind began to think. It observed its surroundings and processed information until a thought came to mind. It's mind paused for a moment before working even harder than before. The creature had a simple thought. It was a simple question that shouldn't require this much thinking. The answer should be clear.

'Didn't I just die?' was the question.

'I don't remember what it was like before but this is definitely different.' was the answer. The creature felt something was different with its point of view. It felt that this should be very obvious with the proper memories, however confirmation did not come. If only it could still remember what life was like before it died. A certain stiffness in its head and limbs prevented it from observing itself. 'This is probably different.' Its head was only a short distance from the ground. 'This is what makes it feel weird to look around.' The feeling of walking with 4 legs. 'This is definitely different.' The creature came to the conclusion that it was a taller creature. One that walked on fewer than 4 legs and could easily observe the rest of its body.

[Inspiration Acquired]

The creature was surprised to find the information in its mind was verified as a deeper understanding of humans came to it. 'I was a human before, an intelligent and flexible animal that walks on 2 legs and uses tools, weapons, and numbers to make themselves capable of killing stronger animals. That inspiration acquired thing popped into my head with this detailed information on humans, I wonder what that means?' The creature began wandering around, it was in a cave, a big cave. It felt that going down was dangerous so it went up.

Although the creature felt inconvenienced by its short legs, the claws on its feet along with the balance from four legs made it easy to climb even the steep parts of the cave. After climbing up the cave for 10 minutes the creature saw no end in sight and started to feel quite tired. It was at the time when the creature felt the need to take a break that it saw something moving in the dark cave.

[Inspiration Acquired]

'It has wings? A bat seems to be smaller than me if you don't count its stretched out wings, and maybe weaker in general but with flight it will be far faster!' The knowledge made it seem easy to fight in theory. 'Just lure it in and scratch it with all my strength, and it should be a won battle.' The creature walked slowly and moved to the right side of the cave that was more flat so that it could move easier. The bat, noticing its prey moving strangely instinctively knew that it had been spotted so it decided to immediately attack.

The creature and the bat were both fully prepared to fight even though the creature was walking away. At that moment the danger from the depths of the cave intensified. A loud roar could faintly be heard echoing through the cave. The creature felt that it couldn't stop ascending the cave, whatever was down there was now coming up. The bat paused for a second, freightened by the sound. However it only delayed its attack for so long, since its prey wasn't responsible for the roar why should it stop attacking? The creature was tensed up from the dangerous feeling. It could tell that whatever was responsible could kill it in an instant so it decided to get past the bat as quickly as possible, retreat was not an option. With the bat incoming the creature repeated in its mind exactly what it needed to do. The creature didn't need its eyes to see! Despite facing away from the bat it jumped forwards just in time to dodge when it sensed danger from the bat swooping down at it. Unfortunately the jump did not go according to plan as the creature did not land on all of its feet and ended up rolling over on the flat area it was previously walking towards. Neither of the two were amused by this as the bat immediately swooped down for a second time before the creature could recover from the tumble.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEK"

A deep gash was struck into the creature's back just as it got back onto its feet. The creature could sense the danger coming from the attack, but wasn't prepared and thus was unable to dodge. The creature was aggravated by the pain and watched as the bat swooped down for a third time. 'Do you think that attacking the same way 3 times in a row will be effective?' The creature jumped again, this time not to the side, but up. The jump was timed perfectly to land on the back of the bat, but unexpectedly the bat immediately fell to the ground due to the added weight. The creature was enraged by the thought that such a fragile creature could injure it, and without thinking much took a big bite out of the bat's head. It was delicious, the creature's mood quickly turned happy as it started munching down on the bat's dead body.

The creature felt a sharp pain for a few seconds as its body morphed. It's back legs grew longer and stronger while its front legs stayed the same. The creature felt like its overall lethality decreased as its claws shrunk and its teeth became less sharp, but the greatest change was to the creature's intelligence. It only took a few seconds for extremely hot air to fill the cave as well as the creature's lungs. 'I don't want to die again!' Were the last thoughts of the creature before they collapsed and closed their eyes.
