Chapter 15 - Small Details

It was early still after Abel and Ray had done what they could do that morning, now they were just waiting for the person that Ray said would be coming in to give a statement about what she knew.

Abel didn't like waiting much though. Inaction meant that there was time being wasted that would perhaps allow a dangerous criminal to get away with another crime or to disappear all together before they would be able to find them.

He didn't have a office of his yet as that was still being arranged for him since he had been transferred over on such short so instead he had or rather Ray had encouraged him to wait in his office for him until they got the call that the person was here.

Ray had some information that he needed to organize so he didn't mind the waiting. It was important to the case for him to make sure that he kept all the information that he had collected organized and in order since even though Able was frequently the one who took charge, Ray was the senior officer at the station which meant that he was going to be the one responsible for putting together the final report and submitting it to the chief. One of the reasons he wasn't thrilled about the fact that Abel was already starting to get on his bad side. It it became worse, he had no doubt that he would be feeling the wraith of the other more than his partner would be.

"Impatient much?" Ray asked after a few minutes when Abel sat in the chair, jiggling his left knee with arms crossed over his chest as he looked towards the direction of the front desk which is where he knew whomever was coming in would be most visible at.

"Inaction is problematic in my opinion. The longer we don't do anything, the higher the chance becomes that something else could happen in the meantime."

"You really think that it's a bigger case than just a robbery gone wrong or a vengeance murder?" Ray asked as he looked at his partner to see what his expression would say about this question. He hadn't ruled out the option entirely himself, but he also hadn't put it at the front of the list of possibilities. He preferred to deal with the facts that were placed in front of him first and then look to the other possibilities if the facts didn't add up.

"You heard what the corner said for yourself. If she didn't think that it was of much consequence to the case, she wouldn't have shown it to us. The chief even pointed out the fact that a number of use drugs on a regular basis and die of overdose on a daily basis and aren't given much heed to, yet this detail was pointed out to us. It's something worth keeping note of." Abel replied, being honest about the direction that he was looking at the case from.

"I'm not saying you're wrong for looking at the case from that perspective. But, I don't remember anything that resembled drugs or any odd bottles, bags or such at the crime scene." Ray had already gone back over everything in his mind after the corner had pointed this out to them, but he couldn't recall any such things being at the scene or being pointed out by forensics as a item of interest.

"But that could easily be discounted as whoever was there could've taken it from the scene with them if the reason she was killed had nothing to do with an accident or work and was related to drugs." Abel pointed out.

"I'm waiting to get the itemized list back though first to make sure that nothing was over looked before coming the conclusion that a substance of that type might've been taken from the scene. Sometimes small details can be overlooked."

"We certainly won't rule it out, but lets first finish reviewing it from the direction we are already taking with the case and look at that along side it rather than just completely shifting the direction of everything before we know for sure." Ray tried to reason. He didn't want to make any major mistakes on his first case a new detective.

"Fine, but if we don't have any new leads by tomorrow, we're going to handle this the way that I think is best." Abel conceded though based upon the tone of his voice it didn't seem as though he was that thrilled to agree to those terms.

Ray was getting ready to try to reason further with him about the perspective that he was looking at the case from when Rachel from the front desk came back.

"There's a Larissa James here to speak with detective Monroe and Gray." This got both of their attention. Glancing at the clock, Ray noticed the fact that she had come much earlier than they had originally agreed upon.

Abel was the first one to head up to the front desk to go and meet Larissa. Ray wasn't far behind him but he took a second longer than his partner to thank Rachel for letting them know the other woman had arrived.

"I'm Abel Gray and this my Partner Ray Monroe. Thank you for giving us some of your time willingly today to give us a statement." Abel told the small, mousy, and rather nervous looking woman as he held out his hand for a shake. The woman took a second before she hesitatingly reached her hand out to shake his.

"It's no problem. If it's something that can help at least. As long as no one else knows that I am giving this statement." The woman replied as they shook hands.

'I don't know if it's any of my business to be telling them this, but I want to help Veronica out. She didn't deserve to die like that and if those drugs have anything to do with it.. I'll tell them if they can keep me say.' Abel froze and looked at the woman in front of him more intently. He was certain that he had heard her talk but the voice sounded more like it had come from his inside his head rather than the woman's mouth.

"You know something about the drugs?" Abel asked, gaining his composure as he let go of Larissa's hand before he asked her the question. The woman looked up at him with wide-eyes, seemingly shocked at what he had just asked. Ray also seemed rather confused as to why he said.

"H-how did you know that?" She asked taking a tentative step back, acting as though what Abel had just said was something that shouldn't have been spoken out loud.
