Chapter 21 - Suspect

Abel let Ray be the one to knock on the door as he stepped to the side where he wouldn't be as noticeable. In the case that Ace was at home bit decided to bolt rather than come peacefully with them for questioning, Abel wanted to be positioned in a way he thought would be best to stop the other from running.

Ray knocked softly on the door twice trying to approach it in a way that he thought wouldn't alert Ace if he was home.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" They both heard the exhausted sounding voice yell from inside.

"Ethan, I thought you were supposed to be coming later with.." Ace trailed off when he noticed that the person standing on the other side of the door wasn't the person he had been expecting.

"Who are you waiting for?" Ray politely asked as it was taking Ace a few seconds to process exactly what was going on.

The moment that he did however, he tried to make a run for it as Abel had predicted he most likely would. His partner thought he had grounded himself well enough to hold his position even when Ace slammed into him in am attempt to get away, but Ray instead lost his balance and almost fell over from the impact.

Abel managed to grab the back of the hoodie he was wearing and tug him back and around so that he could grab his left arm and pin it behind his back.

Despite the difficult position that he found himself in, Ace still wasn't ready to go easily. Abel this time however with the help of his system Prose was able to know right away ESE he was hiding- there were drugs somewhere in the house that he was hiding. What kind they were he wasn't sure, but he would find out soon enough.

"Now, isn't it a bit rude to suddenly try and run off without answering the question you were asked?" he asked as forced Ace against the wall so that he could pin him more easily.

"I know my rights! I don't have to answer anything you ask without a lawyer being present!" The young man snapped as he still tried to twist around in Abel's grip in an attempt to somehow get free even though it was nearly impossible with the way he was being held.

"It might be wise to refrain from using excess force." Prose reminded him.

"You didn't come here to make an arrest and if you accidentally injured or otherwise hurt your prime suspect at this point, he might get you in trouble." He forgot what it was like to have that secondary conscious in his mind that would critique if he did something that could be considered unjust or wrongly timed.

In this case though Abel wasn't all that worried because he wasn't really pinning Ace that hard against the wall, just enough to keep him in place so that they could get a chance to talk with him.

"I can only speak for myself when I say I don't mean any harm by coming here. I just actually wanted to come here to ask you a few follow up questions, but your behavior has put me in a rather bad place." Ray told the young man as he came closer to try and continue the conversation from before.

"We had a new development in the case that might involve you and we hoped that you would be willing to answer a few questions that might clear your name, but it seems like you're not in much of a talking mood.

"I don't have anything to talk about. I don't know what or the why of what happened to Victoria. I don't know anything about the drugs either." Ace rambled off as he tried to shift his position to get Abel to release the arm that was pinned behind his back, but it was to no avail as the other wasn't loosening his grip in the slightest.

"Drugs? I never said anything about drugs. What makes you think drugs are involved?" Ray asked keeping up the calm and clueless act, hoping that it cause Ace to slip up further and maybe tell them what is really up. Instead though realizing that he might've said too much, he suddenly became really quiet after repeating again that he didn't have to answer any questions without a lawyer present.

"Since you kindly left the door open would you prefer that my partner here goes into your house and see if maybe what we're looking for is somewhere in there?" Abel offered leaning close to his ear to a low but threatening tone.

"I'm sure if we could find what we're looking for in there that it would be more than enough to arrest you on drug charges. Maybe you would be more willing to talk after a few more months or perhaps years in jail?"

"It's unwise to threaten a suspect without sufficient evidence to back up the threat that you're making. Since you don't know that the drugs are actually in there, it is unadvised to make such threats."

"Prose, I appreciate your backseat driving, but I know that you would've connected with his thought about the drugs that are inside. I think that' enough evidence coming from his own mind to already know that he's hiding some kind of drugs in there." The system became quiet after he said this, most likely because he didn't have an argument for this response as he knew the host wasn't wrong in his claim.

"I don't think you're legally allowed to do that." Ace replied in barely whisper, by the way his voice wavered it was evident that Abel hit on something that he might be able to use as leverage to get him to talk.

"Technically no, but you did leave the door open so it wouldn't actually be considered breaking and entering, especially if you so kindly accompany us back inside. At that point we'd just be two detectives who came pay you a visit for a follow up, you let us inside and while we were there we just so happened to come across some drugs." He replied glancing back at Ray who he realized was being rather quiet.

He wasn't quite in favor of the direction that his partner was going with this situation, but he wasn't wrong either. It couldn't exactly be considered breaking and entering if the door was already open and they just happened to go in with the suspect.

"If you don't want to talk, do you think if we wait inside long enough Ethan will still be coming along to pay you a visit and may be more willing to tell us what's going on then you would be?" Abel asked continuing to pressure the young man who was starting to slowly panic. He could feel it in his thoughts. Though his mind was mostly blank, when he did try to think of a way out of the situation, Abel could read it is as a jumble of thoughts that didn't quite make sense. This question seemed to push a big trigger with him however that sent Ace into a panic.

"No, no, no. You can't be here when he comes, you can't talk to him. If he finds out I'm here with two detectives, he would kill me!" Ace replied in a panic trying harder to get away from Abel than he had before causing the other to have to plant his feet in a firmer position to keep the young man in a pinned position.

"Why would this Ethan kill?" Ray asked but was met again with silence, but he could tell that the other was still in a panic by the heavy way that he was breathing.

"Tell me who he is and why he would kill you." Ray pressured again. He wouldn't be able to help Ace if he couldn't get this answer out of him.
