I viewed the results from my first small group combat experience, not being able to help but feel dissatisfaction that this was all I had to show for it.
Even though a single level was a lot to most people, I could get that EXP pretty easily, so it didn't feel like much of a reward when compared to the arguably safer encounter with the [Clawed Centipede].
Resolving to make the most of it, I closed my eyes and dropped all three AP into sorcery, bringing it up to a grand total of 32, whilst relishing the feeling of my power increasing by more than 10%.
Brad and I had finished the trek home an hour ago, and after turning in our proofs of subjugation at the guild post we said goodbye and he departed. I got my share of 18 Dali, and since it was pretty late I went over to the tavern to stuff myself with a big dinner for 3 Dali, before getting up to go across the building to rent a room.
I felt like I saw something move incredibly quickly away from behind the central counter of the Guild Post out of the corner of my eye, however I couldn't be sure.
At the smaller periphery counter for renting rooms, I saw a clerk disappear around the corner as if they were being dragged away, before Jina came out from a back room to sit at the counter.
"..."
"Hi, uhm..."
...
"hmm?" She vaguely smiled, her eyes like slits: Unreadable.
"Can I... get a room for three nights...?"
"hmm?"
"A uhm, a room... please."
"hmmmmmmmm?"
"J... Miss Jina?"
"Yes, what is it Mister Einer?"
"...Can I rent a room for three nights? It was 20 Dali right?"
"Ah. Of course!" This time she had a wide smile, and it was the first time I had seen her make a major break from her poker face.
's-scary...'
"Here's the money."
"mmm, you'll be in room #17 this time... one second..."
Jina went behind the cabinets and retrieved the key for room #17, which she held out to me instead of placing it on the counter this time.
When I held out my own for her to place it in, she did infact put the key in my hand, but when I tried to withdraw she held on.
"Mister Einer, if you have any troubles... do make sure to come find me."
I couldn't see the expression on her face, being too focused on the pale hand currently over mine as I attempted to hold back my embarrassment, but I could here a strange emphasis placed on the last part.
With that, she released me, and I hurried away to find my room.
I let the worries about the situation leave me as the comfort from a full belly and poor quality bed (which felt to me like heaven), took me off to dreamland with assistance from my tiredness.
After a good night's sleep and a full recovery, I returned to the bottom floor of the post, ordering a light breakfast at the tavern.
I had been able to leave all of my equipment and possessions in my room this time, since I had it for three days, and all I had brought down was my old pouch with a few Dali, my room key, and the small knife I had taken back then.
sitting there at a large table without anyone else, I held my knees to my chest for comfort as I nibbled at the meal I had just been served.
Contrary to all expectations however, someone suddenly sat next to me.
it was pol- Kimi, the adventurer I had saved before.
"Good morning Einer! I just wanted to thank you again... do you mind if I sit with you? I was about to get some food before looking at requests for the day."
"o-ooh, Kimi? you're welcome, you can sit here if you want."
Kimi motioned for a waiter, who had already noticed Kimi take a seat and was preparing to come over.
The whole time I kind of just watched her out of the corner of my eyes, while continuing to eat. I was interested to see what kind of person this was, and if they could be trusted.
Kimi couldn't help but think however, 'he kind of looks like a little chipmunk... eating like that and sitting like that at the same time.'
And from across the building Jina was secretly watching while working.
'the little chipmunk... is being stalked by another predator now...?'
'Unacceptable', a dangerous gleam, but nothing more, for now.
After eating, I hesitantly nodded to Kimi and left her to go over to the request board, intent on finding something that would be ideal for my new theory on how I could abuse EXP gain.
A few minutes in to sifting through a sea of papers on the massive board, I caught a snippet of conversation that immediately stole all of my attention.
I whipped around and speed walked to the pair I thought I had heard it from.
"You two! did one of you just say something along the lines of 'faster magic regeneration'?"
"Woah- I guess, what do you want?"
"Can you tell me about that? Actually, please. Please do."
The other guy cut in, "I was just telling him about a skill I had gotten my hands on recently, which is useful in increasing the rate of recovery for arcana. What's it to you?"
I subsequently noticed the shining Geode crests on both of them. One proudly displayed on a metallic collar and the other on the soft robes of a mage.
"Hmm? What's this Stone Rank kid? You want it from him or something?" The one who was dressed as a mage responded, and was also the first one who had spoken when I approached.
I inferred that I had intervened on a possible sale between a guy who wanted the skill and one who didn't need it.
"n-no! I uhm, just wanted to hear more about how I could recover faster..."
Poor choice of words.
"Kid. Just cause your stats are shit doesn't mean you should bother us." A voice as cold as the first rank's namesake came out from the guy wearing armor, who I assumed was a seller.
The sudden verbal assault took me off guard, and I realized my desperation to learn about magic had just gotten me a whole lot of nothing, aside from a bad situation.
