Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Where am I?

I can see shapes and colors but they're all fuzzy. I tried walking forward but I couldn't get any closer. It's like there was an invisible wall in front of me.

I could hear voices and what looked like shapes of people moving around coming from the other side .

I tried moving around the wall but the wall circled around me. Only letting me see this specific area.

"No! Just let me go…" someone cried out

The voices were getting clearer but not enough for me to understand very well. I held my ear up to the wall.

"...can't go...go alone…" another voice said

I moved my head away to look at what was going on. There was a tall building with a large bottom with a pointed tip. On the bottom here were two figures and struggling against them was a smaller one. One of the figures held a sharp object and jammed it into the smaller one's arm. They kept struggling for a while before the smaller one went slack. One of the figures carried the smaller one inside the building while the other fell in a heap and shook on the ground.

Are they crying?

The figure inside came running outside, picked up the one on the ground and dashed away.

I could hear the one being carried wailing loudly. It hurt my heart for some reason.

I saw a spark at the bottom of the building. I got closer to it to see what it was. Then, a flash of white and the images were gone.

I blinked a couple of times only to realize that I was in a jungle of some kind. It looked like moms drawing in the glass window.

"Kota!" Someone yelled

I turned back to see who called me and saw Derrick running towards me at full speed.

"What's up?" I asked

"Why are you spacing off? Anyways, so you know that the Comet that's going to come in a few months, right?"

"What do you mean was?" I asked

"It's coming in just a few hours!"

"Huh?"

He grabbed my arm and pulled towards the underground bunker we prepared for this very moment. It wasn't fully prepared but it was enough for us to stay for a few months if we needed to.

The rest of the crew were carrying equipment and supplies inside the bunker. Naomi walked over to us. She was the Major of this crew.

"Gather enough food and get settled inside. We don't know the exact time this space rock will arrive." She ordered

"Yes ma'am" we said

A girl stomped towards us with an angry face.

"What about me? I need to have the most food and space in this stupid bunker! My father should be here any minute! You will all be sorry if anything happens to me!" She yelled at us

"After you finish, be sure to take care of our guest" Naomi sighed as she walked off, leaving us with the Captain's daughter, Soprano.

She huffed like a child and walked towards her seat and watched us while we worked.

"Geez...spoiled much?" Derrick whispered

I chuckled.

No one knew why she was here. All we know was that she was the Captain's daughter and we needed to keep her safe from everything. Lord only knows what would happen if the princes got a scratch on our watch. The last time a mosquito landed on her, she gave the poor man on guard duty an ear full.

We moved food supplies from the van inside the bunker for hours before we finished.

We got back to Soprano who was now on her phone.

"Hey! You should head inside" I said

She glanced up from her phone and back down but said "Why are you two always together?"

Deciding to humor her, I asked "Who?"

"You and the other guy. Derrick?"

"We've been close since we've been on this crew." I explained

"Oh. It's not because you're together?" She asked

"Huh?!" I asked as I blushed

Derrick jumped on my back and said "What are you two talking about?"

Soprano smirked at us. I glowered and pushed him off of me.

Derrick fell and landed with a thump.

"Ouch! Kota!" He yelled

He looked like he wanted to say more but the Major instructed for us to head inside.

I walked down into the bunker along with Soprano and Derrick.

As everyone got settled in, Soprano yelled "Wait! My father isn't here yet!"

"He won't be able to make it. He's going to wait on a faraway island, safe from the comets impact. When it's safe, he'll come." Major explained

"Why can't we-"

A loud bang insterupted Soprano.

"Close the doors! Everyone sit down!" Major yelled

"The comet just broke the sound barrier. You must have heard the loud sound." A voice from the Majors walkie talkie said

She held it up and said "We did"

"Did we just hear a sonic boom?" Soprano asked "How fast is this thing going?"

No one answered. We're only the army not astronomers.

We felt rumbling and then silence.

Major spoke into her walkie talkie "Hello? Has the comet landed yet? Is it safe to go out?"

We heard static for a second before hearing "It has landed. But you may want to wait a few minutes for-"

It cut off before finishing. Major tried contacting them again but it was no use.

"We have been cut off from outside communications but for now, we wait a few minutes just like they said" Major said

Soprano held her phone up and whispered, "No wifi"

After a few minutes, we climbed up the ladder of the bunker and got out. There was so much dust in the air that we couldn't breath. We covered our faces with our shirts and looked for the comet.

It was in the exact spot we expected it to be. It was too hot for us to touch it so we headed inside to get away from the dust.

Soprano ran up to us and asked "Where is it? What happened?"

"We need to let it cool down and let the dirt in the air settle down. You should call your dad" Major said

"I already tired but he didn't pick up"

Major called him on the walkie talkie but no response.

"That's odd"

She tried her phone but it wouldn't turn on. She turned towards us "Get your phones. Are they working? Do you have a signal?"

We got our phones but they wouldn't turn on.

Soprano waved her phone around "It was just working a second ago!"

"Shit" Major whispered. She ran towards the television in the room but it also wouldn't work.

"I'm going to head towards a nearby town to see if we can communicate with anyone," Major said as she ran towards one of the military cars.

I started to worry. What was going on with all the technology? Why wasn't anything able to work?

The Major ran back inside "It won't start up. Nothing will"
