Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten: Change of Heart

Tetsuo Naru's POV

"Tatsumi? It's me, Tetsuo." I knocked on Tatsumi's door, asking for her permission before entering her room. I waited for a little bit but I didn't receive any response from her. "Tatsumi?"

I knocked a few more times but there was still no response from her, my heart started beating faster as fear started taking a hold of me.

I quickly opened the door, hoping to not see Tatsumi's body lying still on her bed with a sharp object on her hands, ending her life.

"Tatsu--" I stopped my sentence as I saw Tatsumi sitting on her bed, applying makeup on her face, not paying attention to me.

My heart started beating slowly, a sigh of relief comes out from my mouth as I see that nothing bad happened to her. I closed the door behind me and I placed the plastic bag filled with tangerines, Tatsumi's favorite fruit.

"Care to explain why you didn't answer the door when I asked for permission?" I asked, crossing my arms as I stand in front of her, watching her run the makeup brush along her cheeks.

"Shh! I'm concentrating!"

"Concentrating? What for?"

"Applying this makeup on me. This is my first time doing this so you better shut up or I'll make you shut up."

I stood around, waiting for her to finish.

She lets out a sigh as she stopped, placing the mirror she was holding in her lap, closing the makeup kit. "Oh who am I kidding? I'll never get used to putting on makeup." She whined, wiping away the makeup that was already on her face.

"You couldn't have shown me first before you wiped it? And where did you get this makeup anyway?"

"I asked the nurse if I can borrow her makeup. I wanted to try and apply makeup on me. And why do you want to see it? It's hideous anyway. Do you want to see your girlfriend wearing hideous makeup?"

"You're already hideous without makeup." I jokingly said, giving her another wet wipes after seeing the one she's using being already covered with makeup.

"Oh haha, very funny. Says the guy who, uhh, the guy who--- Agh! I can't come up with a good burn for your eyes!" Tatsumi whined.

"Burn? Like that scar on your face?" I let out a giggle as I started peeling one of the tangerine.

It's been two months since me and Tatsumi started dating, and in those two months the two of us got comfortable with each other, so comfortable that we don't mind if we joke with both of our imperfections.

"I may not come up with a good burn for your eyes, but I know another way to tease you!"

"Oh yeah? Like wha--- hey!"

Without warning, Tatsumi pulled my clothes, pulling me along and making me lie on her hospital bed.

"W-what are you d-doing...?" I blushed, looking at Tatsumi as she pins my hand against the bed, her eyes staring at mine.

"Hey? Tetsuo?" Tatsumi whispered as she started moving her lips closer to mine. "Shall we do it before my surgery?" She chuckled, making me blush even more.

"W-what are you talking about?"

"You know."

Tatsumi kept on teasing, her cheeks started glowing pink as she slowly makes our lips touch.

Before Tatsumi could go even further with what she was planning, the door opened and the two of us looked towards the door, there we saw the nurse standing at the door with a wheel chair.

"My my, you love birds having the honey moon before the wedding?" The nurse joked as she pushed the wheel chair inside the room.

"I-it's not what it looks like!" I defended, looking at Tatsumi to where she just giggles before kissing my cheeks.

"We'll do our honey moon after my surgery?" Tatsumi winked at me as she stood up, walking towards the bathroom of her room.

"She changed." The nurse stated, smiling. "She changed in a great way. In the past, each time I enter this room I always see her gloomy, always wanting to end her life. But when you came around, she changed. It seemed like the room that was once dark became flooded with colors. Thank you for keeping an eye in her."

I don't know what to say, I just smiled and gave her a nod.

"Tetsuo!" Tatsumi came running out of the bathroom and she wrapped her arms around me, resting her chin on my shoulders.

"Tatsumi? What's wrong?" I asked, wrapping my arms around her.

"Nothing, it's just. When my surgery is over, can you hold my hand and wait for me to wake up? I want you to be the very first one I see when I wake up."

I started blushing after hearing what Tatsumi said.

"Or better yet! You can hold my hand as the doctors do the surgery!"

"Eh!? I'm not sure that that's possible!"

"It's not?" Tatsumi looked at me, her eyes started watering.

"What's gotten into you all of a sudden?" I chuckled as I kissed her forehead. She then turned and looked at the nurse.

"Nurse Fubuki? It's not possible to let Tetsuo hold my hand as you perform the surgery?"

The nurse lets out a soft giggle as she looked st Tatsumi. "I'm afraid not, Tatsumi."

"Then, I guess you'll just have to do the first one?" Tatsumi stated as she looked at me. "Hold my hand after the surgery okay? Wait for me to wake up! Promise me!!!"

I let out a little laugh as I held Tatsumi's hand. "I promise."

"Good!" Tatsumi smiles as she lets go from the hug. She then starts walking towards the wheel chair Nurse Fubuki brought and sat on it. "You better wait for me! Tetsuo! Or else you and I are going to have some serious problems!!!"

"Don't worry, I won't leave until you wake up."

"Good! Oh wait, I forgot something!" Tatsumi stood up from the wheel chair and ran towards me, hugging me tight as she kissed me on my lips. "You better reserve that last name of yours for me! Got it!?" She added as she giggled, letting go of the hug and walking back towards the wheel chair.

I didn't got the chance to say a word as Nurse Fubuki started pushing the wheel chair out of the room. I just smiled at Tatsumi as she smiles back.

Today is the day of Tatsumi's heart surgery and I was tasked to wait in Tatsumi's room until the end of her surgery. Tatsumi wanted me to come along with her or just push the wheel chair she'll use to transport her to the surgery room, but it wasn't allowed.

They wanted Tatsumi to be transported by a wheel chair so that she'll have the strength for the surgery, they don't want her feeling tired before starting the surgery.

I let out a sigh as I walked towards the tangerines, peeling the tangerine I was peeling earlier before Tatsumi pulled me.

I sat on the bed and something under Tatsumi's pillow caught my attention.

"What's this?" I muttered to myself, grabbing the thing that was under her pillow. "A letter?"
