Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

"Listen to me. I was assaulted by two men for no reason. This is the closest police station I could find." Sean said, holding an ice pack to his face.

A tall, older man walked in the to room.

"I'm Tom. You are Sean, correct?" Tom said.

"Yeah. Sean." He said, shifting in his chair. "Are you going to go and arrest these guys or what?"

"I need to ask you a few questions first." Tom said.

"What questions?" Sean asked.

"Why are you here, all the way from Indiana?" Tom asked.

"Who are you? A cop?" Sean asked.

"I am the sheriff of Maricopa county." Tom said.

Sean looked a bit surprised.

"So, back to my question." Tom said.

"My wife is missing." Sean said.

"Ah yes. So, she just up and disappeared one day?" Tom asked.

"Kind of, yes." Sean said.

"I don't think kind of is an answer to that. Either she did or she didn't. Did she leave a note? A call?" Tom asked.

"Look. I don't know where she is and I need to find her. She's my wife." Sean said.

"If I'm gonna allow you to parade around my county, interfering with people's lives, I'm going to need to know a little bit more than that." Tom said.

"Just help me find her! She's a missing person. Can't you out something out to look for her?" Sean shouted. Tom sat down next to him.

"You are crazy if you think I'm gonna put out an APB on a woman who left her husband to start a new life. And I got a feeling, she left like she did for a reason. There's usually only one reason for that in these cases and helping you find her is one thing I won't do." He said.

"She had her lawyer give me divorce papers. I haven't seen her since. She left it all. Money. Car. House. Job. Even her clothes. All of it. So I followed the bus line." Sean said. "Please. I just want to talk to her." Sean said desperately.

"I can't tell you what to do. But I will give you some advice. Go home. Pick up the pieces and get on with your life. Leave her be. She's not a missing woman. She left you. End." Tom said getting up.

"One more thing. If something happens to this woman, if she is here in my county or my state for that matter, I am coming directly to you for answers." Tom said. "Take my advice and steer clear of here."

"And what about these guys that assaulted me." Sean asked.

"Couldn't find them either. Looks like everyone around you ends up gone." Tom said, walking out.

He went to his office and called Bill Allison. "Yep. He's here. Got his ass kicked by some locals for snooping around about her. I'm positive she's in Carefree or Cave Creek. Yeah I'll keep an eye out and make sure she's ok. This guy Sean… any history of domestic violence? Yeah. Look into it. I will too. Let me know. I don't have a good feeling about him. Alright Bill. Have a good day."

He hung up the phone. Tom wasn't a young man. He had seen some things and trusted his gut. Sean was a pure narcissist and had all the indications of a man that had a temper and was extremely possessive. And a wife that ran out on him, leaving everything behind. Not a good situation. He decided he would take a trip to Carefree and see what he could find out.
