Steven was walking back towards his car from Sophie's window, it was 1 am, the meeting didn't go as he thought it would, he was frustrated with himself as well as Rain's behavior.
Steven asked Rain multiple times to somehow make Sophie come back but Rain didn't budge from her stubbornness and so he had to only tell Rain everything, and now he was going back today, he turned back to look at Finn's house and saw Rain leaning on the window seal, Steven knew she must be crying but he still smiled and waved at her and she waved back.
He was now up to the fence, he remembered how Rain reacted after he told her that, they all thought that the sisters are not in danger anymore.
"Why?" She exclaimed.
He was uncomfortable with the answer to that at first but then said," Because… Maybe they think both of you don't have powers so you are no harm to anyone who was hunting you that's why he is not hunting you anymore."
"What?" She replied in shock.
"They are still going to send a team here, they will keep a watch on you from afar not like us, and would protect you, but Ace told me to ask you both to protect each other as much as you can." He stated.
He bent and stood up after thinking of seeing the Finns house once again after all it might be the last time. He turned and looked at the branch that was covering Sophie's window now, then he moved his eyes towards the dark hall, and saw a little hunched figure sitting near the glass door.
That must be Sophie, he thought, should I go to her? Well, one of my mission was to tell her about the new order so… He moved towards the glass door, as soon as he was near to it Sophie glanced at him and stood up.
He gestured her to open, as the glass door would only open from inside. She at first stood straight looking at him for a moment then started sliding the door open.
"Aren't you going?" She smiled and moved aside letting him in.
"I was. Then I saw you. I wanted to talk to you too. but why is it so dark?" He replied while sitting on the floor. Looking at him Sophie chuckled and sat.
"I love dark," She replied. She looked out of the glass door again, he did too, then he looked back at her, her eyes were not moving it was looking in the far distance which means she was thinking about something.
Must be thinking about what happened tonight, he thought.
"Um…" He was confused as to what to say, she looked at him. It was dark but he can see her eyes with a little redness from crying or anger in them.
"Um?" Sophie replied.
She is still savage, he thought. "I was supposed to let you know that the new team will not meet you as I did, you won't even know they are there. They will protect and keep watch from distance, but you both need to protect each other…"
"Why from distance?"
"Because the danger of this mission has decreased, so…"
"Decreased?" How?"
He smiled at how even when she is sad she still can't resist putting him in midsentence and she still is curious.
"We haven't seen any shadows since the encounter 5 days ago. So…"
"Did you ask Rain?" She was the only one always seeing them."
"Yes, we did…" He said and as she was about to cut him off again he put his hand in front of her, " And let me finish first, I am going to tell you everything."
She chuckled, and then he did too, " Go on" She replied.
"As we reported that we haven't seen any shadows till now, they told us to come back and the new team will come here and investigate from distance, as Ace is needed in more dangerous missions and as I am about to start my tests too." He looked at her and she nodded and looked out of the glass door while crossing her legs and hugging her knees to her chest.
He smiled and continued, "Our mission is complete here, they think you guys will be safe, as they think that… I don't know how to say this…"
"Like you always do, with your mouth." She sarcastically replied.
"I mean…" He chuckled and then started with a serious tone," They think that you both didn't have any power," Sophie looked at him while he said this.
He was nervous, will she shout at me? He thought, she must be mad as I am giving her sister hopes which could be false, but to her surprise, she calmly asked.
"What if we don't, what about it then? What would you guys do?"
He was surprised with her calmness but was impressed too, she is only 12 and she is handling this better than Rain.
"Erasing memories. They will have to make you forget about this," He explained.
"Oh." That was her only reply.
They both fell into silence, Steven didn't know how to add more and Sophie was staring out without speaking, after some time, Sophie broke the silence with, "Did you tell this to Rain?"
"Yes," He replied.
"Yes? What did she say?"
"She was angry at first then said that she will exercise more and show them all that she had her mot... powers," He replied.
"Her mother's power you mean?" She asked looking at him.
"Sophie..."
"Don't, you can't explain Rain's mind to her sister." She smiled bitterly.
"It's not like I want to explain, but if you guys don't protect each other, and if the shadows came back then who will be there for you both?"
"She has powers, right? Can't she protect herself?" Sophie looked out dejectedly.
He didn't know how to reply to that, he was still thinking when she asked, "Can powers be forgotten? Like can they be lost?"
"No, why do you ask?" He was confused.
"Just..." She didn't look at him.
"Well, to be honest, children at the age of 10 to 15 can forget about their powers, but it is not usual in our world. It's Ju..."
"So that's what you think Rain is going through, that she might have forgotten about her power?" She looked at him intently.
"Yeah..." He was unsure if he should tell her or not, "But they might come back, its called the gap effect in our world..."
He saw her mouthing gap effect. while he continued, "Yeah, and this usually happens to the human children who have powers but are born in the human world, if you are in the human world for too long, just like your childhood memories, your memories of the powers fade as you grow old, but with exercises and training they can come back."
"Come back? What if one doesn't want it to come back?"
He frowned, "It's not up to you, if you are powerful, your powers will come back unwillingly too. Rain will be happy in that world too, you know."
"I know, I know. I just am scared..."
"Don't be, I am there to protect her."
Sophie looked at him and nodded. She looked out again while silence falls in between them again, her thoughts were shouting aloud.
She thought, only if he knew that she wasn't talking about her sister but herself. Only if he would be as friendly and good to her too as he is to Rain, only if he could have talked with her like this when they had meetings, she can't tell him now, he was going and also she didn't want him to pressurize her as well like he was doing to Rain.
She wanted to live here and thus, she hoped that her powers shouldn't be that powerful, that she would just forget about them and never see anything like this again, she wanted to shout at him to take Rain as she was too angry on her behavior but she couldn't as she would miss her dearly if she is gone.
Rain wanted this, I didn't she thought, in mind of her mind she knew somehow that she still had powers and they will come back making everything worse, and she thought what if Rain's powers don't, what if she is not with powers. There was only a 10% chance that they both had power, and if she had powers then that means Rain didn't then what?
How will Rain react to that? Would she shout and curse at her as she did now? Would she accept her? Would Steven react badly? Would he help her as well as he is promising Rain? Would anyone be happy?
I don't want anything but my family happy, she thought while looking at the sky, if there is God, then please hear me, I want my family happy, take my every power if it will result in their unhappiness.
