Chapter 12 - They Just Laughed

Mwop looks at Hubrid steadily, still jumping out of excitement as Arry begins to cry beside her, "Can you really keep such a promise!?" She pushes Arry out of the way with a bump from her side and runs over to Hubrid.

She begins hugging Hubrid squeezing out all of the air in his lungs as Arry lay on the ground, nearly unconscious in a pile of books that fell on top of him upon impact. Arry quickly bursts free from the books with his flames and begins dashing towards Hubrid in haste.

"I still don't know why you attacked us earlier, how you've lived this long, or even how you know Nigil's name but…" Arry's tears of joy turn into tears of love as he runs over to Hubrid at full speed and hugs both Hubrid and Mwop at full strength; his arms nearly sear them both from the heat exuding from his arms. "I can see that you haven't changed a bit!" Arry says with a sniffle as he continues hugging with snot dripping down his face and his body growing warmer.

"Huh," Hubrid says in confusion while looking at them in awe.

Regil begins to sniffle, tear droplets echoing through Hubrids mind, 'You would do such a thing for my subordinates?' He begins to howl from the utter amount of kindness Hubrid had shown to him and his people.

"What are you-,"

'You're truly a spitting image of that man, Hubrid.'

"I am?" Hubrid says questioning Regil as the two fairies looked at Hubrid with joy.

"So it wasn't a fluke? You'll truly help us free Hauura?" The two fairies cry out in unison as their joy continues to grow so much that they ignore Hubrid's reactions.

"Who-rau?" Hubrid begins to grow increasingly more confused.

'Hubrid, I saw your memories and as I recall, a man by the name of Druchess stressed to you heavily how important it was to remember her name and history...'

"Ueh?" Hubrid lets out a strange sound as he tried to remember who Haaura was.

'Hubrid, with his dying words, he spoke to you about Hauura... Don't tell me you truly forgot about her?'

"Oh yeah... I remember her..." Hubrid says in an attempt to convince Regil.

'She gave you her magic and saved your life, surely you jest?'

Hubrid begins to remember the past couple of months in his life, it all felt like a bad dream to him. Small blots of his past were expunged from his memory in an attempt to keep him sane. All of the past trauma he'd endured came back to him as if he'd just awoken from a terrible dream. The smile he forced himself to wear began to decay as he looked down at his dirty hands and clothing; mud smeared over his arms, legs, and body but still, he smiled through all of the pain he was enduring.

To Hubrid, smiling was more than just an action, it was freedom. He would never let that freedom go ever again even if it meant taking that same freedom away from others. He'd made up his mind; that he'd find his path by himself, to decide right from wrong without fail, and to find his truth.

Though Hubrid had a simple mind, his ideas blurry and unrefined, he knew what he would have to do to move up in the world. He thought back to when Druchess had nursed him back to health and educated him. He remembered small bits of the stories Druchess would tell him, Hubrid however, did not want to recall his lessons. When Druchess had first told Hubrid about Gods, the afterlife, and about his people; he'd gained a new hope until he learned what it truly was.

He was told that Gods and Goddesses were all-powerful, that they could change history in the blink of an eye. This information intrigued Hubrid; it also angered him. Why would these beings with what seemed to be an endless well of power forsake him and his people? Did the Gods have favorites? Did the Gods enjoy seeing the people beneath them suffer?

Despite Hubrid's childish nature and naivety, he was a quick learner, even a bit of a philosopher. He pondered to himself, 'How could someone like me help someone so great and all-powerful? Even if I could help her should I? I was freed from slavery only to become the slave of another master?'

Hubrid had remembered one thing, the rest of the information he tossed to be back of his mind so that he'd never forget his true goals. He wanted to go to a place higher than even the heavens so that he could see his family again. With his ambitions and hopes high, he still had his doubts; he wanted to believe in a place so great and people so mighty but, how could he?

"When people die, their spirits are released from their mortal internment and soar into the skies; I'll be dead one day too, Hubrid, and when I go, I'll be sure to watch over you," Druchess spoke to the naive Hubrid who'd been studying in the corner of the cave in wonder.

"Why will you die?" Hubrid asks curiously.

"So that I can go to greater heights," Druchess replied with joy.

"Greater heights? You'll go back to the Arupio?" Hubrid asked as he flipped another page with his smile growing slowly.

"If I went back there, I'd basically already be as good as dead!" Druchess says as the two of them laugh as tears sweep down their faces.

"Why is it so funny?" Hubrid asks as he laughed uncontrollably, nearly dropping his books to the cold ground of the cove.

Druchess laughs even harder as he walks over to Hubrid; putting his hand on his should and nearly trips on his beard as the cave began to echo with both of their howls of laughter, it was as if they were hyenas reflecting sounds off of one another, or wolves howling at a full moon.

"I wanna go back to that farm one day and tell them all about the afterlife and the Gods, I bet it would make them happy," Hubrid says with a warm smile on his face as he looked at Druchess as his laughter continued growing.

The smile on Druchess's face slowly faded into a frown and his laughter slowed while he began to rub on Hubrids shoulders in an attempt to comfort him.

Druchess speaks to Hubrid cautiously, so that he wouldn't raise any suspicion as he looked at Hubrids' turned back, "That would be nice of you to do for them."

"Why didn't I know about these things before you taught me?" Hubrid asked as his eyes gleamed with eagerness.

"Well... Gods, Goddesses, Life, and Death inspire people Hubrid; Arupians wanted your people to be devoid of even the smallest amounts of hope. We live our lives to serve the Gods, we fight to live so that we can die another day. I've taught you plenty about the three goddesses Hubrid, would you like to learn of the others?"

"There are more!?" Hubrid replies in wonder as he turns his head to Druchess.

"There are many more, do you want to hear their stories?"

"Yes!" Hubrid retorts as he slams his book shut and gives Druchess his full attention.
