And so, she had to be there in order to look after the crops that are grown on the land and ensure the well being of it. Martha's grandfather too was an influential figure in his town.
He used to rub his shoulder with other prominent figures of his town and other nearby towns. As long as Martha's memory can date back, she could still recollect a handful of events with her grandfather. Most vivid of all is the one when her grandfather would get on his knees with both of his hands on ground so to become four legged animal.
He would then let Martha climb on to his back and take her around the house. Martha was six or seven years old at that time when she'd climb on to his grandpa's back and take a ride around the home.
Every time she would tap a bit on his grandpa's back, he would make neigh loudly so to give an impression of a horse neighing to her command.
Both her maternal grandparents loved their little grandchild profoundly. Another memory she could recollect with her grandfather was when she was staying at her grandparent's home along with her grandfather only while her granny along with her daughter – Martha's mother – had gone to some place due to some work.
At that time, her grandpa was taking care of her. She remembered this event as vividly as the first one because of one thing. Out of boredom, she had asked her grandfather to get her something to eat. Her grandpa, who just couldn't see her daughter feeling hungry – though she had just asked this to him out of boredom – began to think of cooking something. He went to the kitchen followed by Martha, taking little steps to keep up pace with his grandfather who was almost rushing to prepare something for her granddaughter to eat.
First stood her grandpa, next to whom stood little Martha, barely being able to reach her head to the top of platform of kitchen. She immediately cried, "Paaaa!" – She, at that time, never called him grandpa but just Paa and Papa to her own father – She lifted her arms in a way as if commanding the big man to hold her into his arms so she too can see what he is doing. His grandfather lifted her up but rather than carrying her in his arms, sat her on the kitchen platform only, right beside the various kitchen commodities.
He made sure to shift the spices away from her as he didn't want to welcome any trouble
. Now what was in front of him was little Martha who, from his point of view was hungry and beside his sweet little granddaughter were the ingredients by which he will make something for her. It was the first time this man was going to cook for someone as dear as his sweet granddaughter.
Therefore, he got to be extra careful while cooking something. Being a farmer, he knew how to grow crops and spices and vegetables and what not. But little did he had the knowledge on how to make something edible out of whatever he knew how to grow out of the land.
Nonetheless, he began with his pursuit.
He first examined all the ingredients that lay in front of him. Of those, he was supposed to plan something that her granddaughter would like to eat. Martha, on the other hand, was innocently observing her grandpa who seemed as if he was solving the most difficult mathematics problem of all time that no one's ever been able to solve.
She said, "Paa!"
"Yes little girl?" asked her grandpa, always geared up to listen and act on her grandchild's command.
"I am not hungry. It is ok" said the little Martha, not being able to bear the distress on the old man's face.
Her grandfather's mood suddenly shifted from a distressed face to a jolly man with a big smile on his face, realizing what made the little one say this. "You need not worry my princess. It wouldn't take more than half an hour for your grandpa to cook something healthy and of course, tasty!" said grandpa
Martha posed so innocent a smile that could be weighed against a billion dollar and yet would nonchalantly outweigh the hefty amount.
This smile of Martha encouraged her grandfather to get back to preparing something good for her granddaughter and began with his work.
He again ran his eyes across what was kept in front of him. There were eggs in front of him so he though to make a cheese omelet.
Now that he had the main ingredient of his dish, he began to find the secondary ingredients like cheese, some spices, essential vegetables, etc.
He gathered all the ingredients; some from the cupboard, some from the vegetables basket and some from the drawer. After gathering all the essential ingredients, he now began to find the utensils. He first of all took out a bowl in which he would blend the eggs.
He, meanwhile blending the eggs, added the cheese to the bowl. He had already chopped the cheese into tiny small pieces.
After adding cheese, he then put a few chopped veggies like tomato, onion and very minimal amount of capsicum. He knew how much Martha despised the taste of capsicum but being a responsible grandfather, he made it sure to change this habit of her grandchild at a ripe age only and that she get used to eating green veggies for a good health.
Upon seeing her grandfather adding capsicum into what she believed as her to-be-snack, she immediately said, "Please Paa no caspicum!" she hadn't quite learned to pronounce the word in the correct way. Anyway, her grandpa understood her motive and responded, "Just two pieces only, please?" trying to posing a smile as dearly as Martha to convince her.
Martha, being a child and keenly observing the efforts of his grandpa replied in positive to her request and said, "But you will only eat those" as she posed a mischievous smile this time.
