Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Finally some geography lessons coming to use" Martha spoke to herself as this was the best thing she found to do in this trip where she had no one to talk to.

The clouds were building up fast over them and in no time, rain would appear. As the clouds gathered in unison in the entire sky, the Sun had little to no presence in the sky now.

Yet it was still at its job to reach its light to every corner of the landscape in sight.

It was able to do so through the little gaps within the clouds the sunrays made their way to the land from.

After driving for about ten minutes past the view of the hill that simulated a sunset scene, little raindrops began to appear on the windshield of the car and gradually on to the windows as well. The time must be somewhere around 12 PM and Martha expected to reach to her granny's at about 12:45 PM.

It appeared to be drizzling outside. The rain showered on the crops and furnished them with the essential water requirements. With the Sun hid upwards of the blanket of clouds, it was unable to give the required amount of light so an object can be perceived the way it is.

The lack of presence of sufficient light enabled Martha to perceive everything around her in a different way. Everything seemed to have gained contrast by arriving at a darker version of their respective color.

The lush green and friendly fields have now turned dark greed and appeared very bold than being friendly.

The trunk of each tree that they left behind as they drove ahead was dark brown that represented to Martha a deep sense of sadness and isolation. Of course, it perfectly matched to the state that Martha was in currently, sad and isolated. Sad because the day didn't go as planned by her and isolated because both her parents weren't on talking terms, neither to each other nor to Martha in a typical manner they used to be.

Therefore, she liked taking a look at the trunk of every tree they drove past as she could feel herself connected to it.

"At least I can share my feelings with a tree" smiled Martha. "Everything would become normal as it was once we had reached granny's place. She's the only person at this time I can think of who'd understand me.

Of course Matthew as well but it's impossible for him to reach out to me and hug me tightly and say repeatedly how much he missed me and how worried he grew when I didn't show up at the Sunday gathering. I wonder if he's even missing me or not.

If yes, I hope he misses me in a good way and not curse me for not meeting him today" she again lost in talking to her own self.

She just waited patiently to reach to her granny's home which, as per Martha, was just half an hour away from where they were driving. So lost she was in her thought that when she came back to the reality, she found the window next to her was all covered up in fog.

This obstructed her from enjoying the outside view with since the windows were still shut as per her mother's orders.

She, with her hand, removed fog from just one small portion of the window where her eyes could witness the beauty of outside from. She brought her eyes close to the portion of the window which she had just wiped off right now and looked outside.

There was only one word that popped up in her mind upon witnessing the view outside. "Breathtaking" she thought.

She then playfully, with her index finger, wrote Matthew on the foggy window right below where she had made herself a peephole to see through. She had also replaced the 'A' in Matthew with a heart sign and smiled widely to herself.

She then erased his name before anyone else could see it, thought they haven't looked at her the entire time the car was on drive mode.

She then went for the portion that still contained some fog and wrote granny, this time again replacing the 'A' of granny with a heart, a bigger heart than what she had drawn for Matthew.

"Who is more dearly to me, Matthew or granny? Girl, stop making this nonsense in your mind.

The two cannot be compared at all. But, what if I had to choose out of the two of them, whom would I choose? Seriously? Again you're dealing with all those silly questions? But what to do for past time? I should keep myself engaged till the time we reach granny's place so it seems a good time that I answer to myself some hard questions? Ok, go ahead.

So on one hand, Matthew is on his knees and holding a ring in his hand and asking me if I would like to marry him and live with him for the rest of our lives.

And on the other, my granny is seeing me as a full grown and mature person who had made it to a job and is now earning well, and thereby asking me to build a home – if not castle – where she could live with me in her final years.

Whom would you choose Martha? I need answers from you, or from myself. Would granny be okay if I choose to live with Matthew and not her? Or ask Matthew to postpone the marriage idea for some while till she spends some good years with her granny? How come I would tell him to wait for me when I can't wait anymore to get married to him? Okay I have arrived at a solution.

I will tell Matthew that I will marry him on one condition that granny would staying with the two of us post their marriage.

He will agree to my condition. In fact he will have to agree to my condition, for there is no other woman that can love him more than I do. But, what if granny ever walks in on us while we're making love? That would be too embarrassing.

Oh please Martha, do not sink to such a level of stupidity and stop talking more and more to yourself and better enjoy the view outside" She wiped the window glass since it was again all fogged up now and looked outside.

After a couple of seconds, she felt like bursting into laughter at her own thoughts and tried not to make any sound that would put her parents suspicious. "Silly Martha" she called herself. "Granny's place is not far away now."
