Satyrs used to be or rather are still a part of the beast men race. They fell under the same ruling council as the centaurs, the arachnids and the gorgons and lamias. But the satyrs had taken slavery the hardest. According to legends they were one of the few beast men races with access to magic, and even more so one of the races on a global scale that had magic that was unique to them. Satyrs had access to what was called [hearth Magic] they were the only none nomadic Beastmen race and were also the only ones that left the beast men continent to travel the world looking for households to serve.
They were once the servants and housekeepers of gods and dragons, so their magic was tied to an ancestral shrine of the Dragon Romas and his wife the goddess of Home, fertility, Motherhood and Earth. Romas was a dragon known as the father, while he was not the most powerful, Romas was known as a dragon that took in strays and found a place for them. the satyrs were one such strays, and Romas found a home for them by putting them in all homes. Giving them access to powerful magic, magic that would forever be in power as long as they were willing to serve.
Satyrs left home to choose their masters, but slavery took that choice away. At first Satyrs were probably the Weres with the most value due to their housekeeping abilities. But such abilities fade due to the elimination of the choice about who to serve. And as their magic faded so too did their sanity, until they became nothing more than rabid monsters. So it was quite a shock to the entire crew when a naked Asd came back to the camp dragging a massive corpse of a bear and carrying two scared looking and very sentient young satyrs on his back.
The shock wore off very quickly when the reality settled on everyone there. These satyrs were young, satyrs were long lived, almost as much as elves and could serve a particular household for hundreds of years before passing away. They did not easily conceive young and it has been quite a few years since satyrs were even sighted seeing as they were almost just as extinct as the Werelions. If they were young and without the madness that has plagued Satyrs, then there was a possibility they can still choose who to serve, which means they were worth a lot of money, enough to actually have everyone on the ship squared away for life.
The first person to make a move had his heart ripped out of his chest by an irate Asd. A quick warning and display of magic from Professor Mona had made the rest of the crew back off, along with a few harsh words from their captain. But it was obvious to Asd that the captain wasn't happy, especially with the death of one of his crew. But Asd didn't care, he was sorry he killed the bear that had apparently been looking after the two young Satyrs, so he felt responsible for them. plus, they weren't slaves, they had no seal on them, and he would be damned if he would let them put chains on the kids, he was willing to have his blood split for it, and everyone on the airship knew to keep a wide berth from the Werelion that was apparently so much of a magical savant that even the emperor himself had asked for him. They took the caution which was why Asd now found himself sharing his tent with two and a half foot tall satyrs.
When he killed someone for them they had quickly latched tighter onto him, so scared that they have not even spoken a single word…. Or better yet it could be that they didn't even know how to speak seeing as they were clothed in fur and seemed to have been raised by a bear. They were asleep now, huddled together in a corner of his tent, keeping as much distance as they could from him and every other strange thing around them. Asd shook his head with a sight and decided to focus on what had taken him to the forest in the first place, he needed to make the glow ball Boris had given him a blueprint for, but he wasn't just going to make it… Asd was going to modify it.
There were a variety of biological and chemical induced agents that could create light. More often than nor for most mages a spell is all they need, and for engineers they need things from as mundane as a glowing rock to asking an alchemist for a brew that gave off enough light. The common blueprint for the glow ball used a common crystal that could be found in almost any burrow, hole or mine. There are farms that actively cultivated the crystals as they were used industrially for a lot of light fixtures.
If he was an already accomplished rune-smith or engineer he would not need the crystal, as he could have made a simple or complex formation to have the ball glow. So instead he was going to do something that's an amalgamation of rune-smithing and simple engineering. In the kit that he was given, there were a couple of metal sheets that could be put together like a puzzle, they were exactly a puzzle as they were just tiny sheets of copper ore. But Asd also had a multipurpose hand tool that was both a plier, a screwdriver and tiny welding iron. With just that it took him almost an hour to make two half circle cups that when combine would make and orb.
The Bronze or rather copper ore were very light and treated with an agent that made them transparent to a certain degree. If not on normal bases it should be impossible for copper ore to send light apart from one side to the other unless light is being refracted off its surface. But this particular sheet was made with convenience for up and coming engineers. They would probably learn to work and create glass later or use a crystal. But this was still a copper ore, it would be letting off as much light as it should be, even if the light crystal was enhancing enough to give off as much light as the sun. so Asd used a drill to poke holes around both halves of the orbs, until it looked like a sieve, giving it space where pinpricks of light could move through in a brighter burst than what its whole form could give.
The next step was tricky, Asd hadn't gotten to the stage where he could write runes with his mana. His control had improved along with his mana manipulation, but not enough where he could make shapes with his mana and infused them into objects. So Professor Mona had given him a pen with mana ink. She was an expert on runes, using the ink would create the rune, except of course the magic in the ink wouldn't last long, not without a proper rune formation where an array for passive mana absorption was used in whatever creation required the [Runic Pen].
Asd welded two support rods within the orbs, and then inscribed the run for stick on both of them, the pen drew from his own mana pool to inscribe the runes, leaving him surprised as professor had not mentioned that it could do that. the runes flashed with a dull grey light, bringing a smile onto Asd face as shifted his attention to the glowing crystal. It was bright, enough that he had to squint his eyes a bit, but when those orbs come together with the crystal in the middle the light would be dulled greatly. He used the pen to inscribe the rune [Brighter] on it, the rune and the way to write it coming to him with such ease that it was akin to breathing.
The moment the rune was completed there was a bright flash as Asd's eyes were severely injured by the glare of the light. He closed his eyelids cursing as he scrambled to put the crystal into one of the half circle and then scrambled blindly for the other half, he heard a loud clang as it fell to the ground, he cursed as he bent down, his hand moving left and right to find it when he felt a small hand grasp his own and place it on what he was looking for. He didn't think too much about it as he enclosed the second half and completed the glowing orb.
It took almost three minutes for his injured eyes to get back to normal, and even then it still felt a bit tender. He looked down at the bright orb of light in his hands, or the glow ball as Boris had called it and couldn't help but smile. It was so bright he couldn't directly look at it, it was like the sun, only unlike the sun there were beams of tiny light shooting out in every direction, making the insides of the tent look as if it was bathed in light. Asd looked down to notice one of the Satyr children, a female from her shape and hair stare up at the orb with awe in her eyes. Asd smiled as he got down on his knees and handed the orb to her.
for a moment she hesitated, and then she took the orb, her face aglow with such light that it reflected off the two tiny nubs on her forehead where her horns were already growing out from. He smiled again as he said to her.
"Keep it, that's a gift from me to you. And even though it's not enough to make up for me killing your friend, let this be a start. I'm sorry." The Satyr looked up at him and said.
"It's okay, she was only looking after us because she was planning to eat us anyway. My name is Gretel, and that's my Friend Hansel, thanks for saving us!" and with that said she went back to bed besides her friend, holding the glowing ball tightly to her chest leaving Asd dumbfounded as he said.
"Ahhh You're welcome?"
