Dawn faced them, her face revealing shock. "Did you hear..."
"Everything? Yes. It was part of the plan; we didn't expect you to cooperate this well."
"But I heard some footsteps. Wasn't that the two of you?"
"Didn't you just hear one? You should have known we don't walk in sync, Lucas." My uncle said, his face looking smug.
"The footstep you heard was a different doctor, heading to his patient. He almost asked me what we were doing here, but I was able to shoo him off quickly. Also, you couldn't see us because we hid well."
That made it sound like they've done that often with other people unknowingly. That gave me the creeps, but I didn't think of the possibility at all. "Then how weren't we able to tell you three came here together?"
"That's because Catherine did the loud walking while we walked on our tip-toes. We may have been able to do this a bit better, like a tiny mic in her chest pocket, but it was hard to go searching for that."
"How did you know to come today? Did someone tell you?"
"Yes, but not Dawn. We still don't know how she found your room number. One of your nurses found you there while she came to pretend-check your vitals. Of course, she didn't need to, but it was still part of her duties and everything. Then she accidentally told Catherine and she told me."
"Then Dr Jones came to tell me about that with Catherine to my office, and we thought of this plan. We couldn't use the mic I have at my home because we had to do this all before I went to see my patients again. Speaking of that, I have to leave now and Dr Jones will tell the two of you about what you need to do."
Then he left without looking back, his quick footsteps echoing in the hallway.
Dr Jones turned to face Catherine and said, "Your work here is done. You may return to your spot and Dawn will tell you about the ending tonight."
After Catherine left, she turned to face us and said, "So that's what you were planning? Under the condition that we do not know about it?"
"It was the best I could think about, especially if Catherine wasn't willing to cooperate. I was ready to take the blame because I was certain you wouldn't stop her from coming to see me."
Dr Jones smiled a bit at that and said, "You found out our mistake there. Nice, well done. Just like you thought, Lucas, we aren't going to stop you both from seeing each other. I think your body is almost done with the recharge, so I think you're able to return to Dawn's side soon, after the result of the test tomorrow is out. So a bit more patience, okay?"
"How long will it take for the results to be out?" I asked, hoping to be close to Dawn as soon as I can.
"We'll have you take the test tomorrow around 10 a.m., and the results will be out later that day. However, all of us are busy that day, so Dr Johnson or I will check with you in the morning after."
"Can't you have some other doctors check on me instead?"
"If that was possible, your result would be out after a week at least. So wait, okay? We can't do it tonight because of other patients, and even if it was possible, the ending would be the same."
Dr Jones then turned to leave, but seemed to remember something and turned to face us again."Dawn, you have to return to your room for your dinner in an hour. Don't forget that and return, alright?"
Dawn nodded in answer and turned to face me as soon as the door shut closed. "So in two days, I'll see you?"
I nodded, disappointment conceivable on my face. "Now that I know the exact time we've got left, it's going to feel like ages."
"I'll come to see you."
Despite my heart starting to dance in happiness, I shook my head. "I'll see you soon and you'll have to get ready for your chemo sessions. Store your energy or do other stuff and stop worrying about me, okay?"
Dawn nodded, her lips pouting, and said, "Lift me back down. I have to go to my room and get ready for dinner. Have a good meal, okay?"
I smiled and nodded, hugging her in my arms. I lifted her back down on her chair and at that, a question suddenly appeared in my head. "How were you able to move in and out of your seat? I thought you didn't have the strength for it right now."
Dawn just gave me a cheeky smile and pecked my cheek, lifting herself while holding onto the handles. While I was dumbfounded enough to say anything about both the kiss and her standing up, she swiftly wheeled herself out of the room.
