Chereads / Divine Banishment / Chapter 2 - The Demon Chant

Chapter 2 - The Demon Chant

Under the angel's instructions, Trinity was lain on the church altar.

After the angel had arrived, many of the residents had left the church and had gone back home, figuring things would be safe. While others chose to stay at the church; either too scared to return home until they were told it was ok, or because they were curious about knowing more about the angel who had come to save them.

For three days, Father Kiran sat by his daughter's side, and for three days she remained possessed by the demon. Her body remained still and unmoving. If they hadn't seen the demon enter her body, no one would have believed that she was possessed.

The angel, never leaving her side the whole time. Tirelessly, she stayed by the altar, with a glow emitting from her hands as they glided over Trinity's body, working to expel the demon.

"Shouldn't her body be, I don't know, flailing about or rejecting the demon?" Father Kiran asked the angel. "She is just laying here as if she is asleep."

The angel looked from Trinity to Father Kiran and back again, before replying. "Truthfully, there is no real way to know what he is doing to her right now. I have been trying to search for him inside your daughter, but he is hiding himself well and I cannot pinpoint his location."

"Aren't possessions more violent? Screaming and clawing?" a voice from the crowd asked who was watching.

The angel replied back, without looking at the speaker. "It is strange that she is showing no symptoms of being possessed. However, not really as strange as you might think. Every person reacts differently to possession. Some people's bodies simply cannot tolerate or handle the divine energy that has entered inside their body. Their bodies will reject it and fight against it. While her reaction is the opposite. Her body is having no trouble with containing the divine energy, therefore resulting in no physical or visual symptoms."

"Divine energy?" Father Kiran asked. "But he is a demon!"

The angel continued her focus and did not look away from Trinity. "I can assure you Father, that demons are made up of the same divine energy that us angels are. Divine energy is neither good nor bad. It is simply energy. It is how that energy is twisted and used, that determines if it can be used for creation or destruction."

Father Kiran opened his mouth to speak, but the angel interrupted before he could get out a word. "Also, I do believe that what you are illustrating is a bit of an exaggeration. Have you ever encountered a true possession before?"

"Of course!" Father Kiran immediately answered. "We deal with possessions all the time. Our church is well known for-"

"Let me put it another way, Father Kiran. With all due respect, but humanity has never dealt with a true possession in thousands of years. What you have experienced in the past was the act of children acting out."

"What... what are you saying?" Father Kiran stammered, unable to believe what he was hearing.

"What I am saying is that until recently, demons have not entered your realm in thousands of years, until a pact was made with a human. This pact broke the seal that kept them banished. Luckily though, it also broke the seal that kept us banished as well." The angel's eyes shifted back over to Trinity as it renewed its focus. "I need to figure out what his end goal is for coming here. Did he say anything to you?"

Father Kiran's mind was swarming. Fear clenched at his heart. 'This is all my fault,' he thought to himself. 'I did this! I thought I was communicating with an angel, but instead... Now my little girl is suffering because of my actions. I have to do something to fix this!'

"No. I mean, yes he did say something, but I have no clue what he was saying. He spoke in some foreign language that I have never heard before. What do you mean by banished?" Father Kiran asked in a rush. He had to know more as to if he was the one responsible for all of this.

The angel's hands stopped briefly for a moment. Stunned, she blinked in surprise and looked up at the Priest. "Don't you even know your own History? Was this information not passed down over the years that we have been gone?"

Looking at Father Kiran's puzzled expression, the angel continued on with her explanation. "Thousands of years ago, the church discovered a way to banish demons from their world. What they were unaware of, was that it would banish more than just demons, but all divine beings; us angels included. For this reason, your world has suffered needlessly without our guidance; allowing evil to fester and grow inside of the hearts of humanity."

"Then, that means that all of the evil done in this world, was done purely by humans?" Father Kiran shook his head in disbelief. "No! I cannot accept that. I refuse to believe that this is true!"

The angel looked at Father Kiran with a warm smile on her face. "I understand your need to believe that it isn't true, but regardless if you believe it to be true or not, does not make it any less accurate."

She lifted one of her hands and placed it upon Father Kiran's cheek, the glow from her palm immediately dissipating upon leaving from Trinity's body. "But it's ok, because I am here now! Together, we can free the other angels and put a stop to their evil. With your help, we can make the world a better place for both of us; the mortal and the divine. And we won't have to worry about the demons interfering with their meddlesome ways."

She smiled at Father Kiran as she said this, and it warmed his heart to hear that everything would turn out alright after all.

At that moment, Trinity flung out her arms as she arched her back. A wispy red smoke was escaping from her eyes and mouth.

This spectacle caught the attention of everyone who was nearby. A crowd began gathering around to watch as the demon was finally being expelled from Trinity after so many days.

Whispers were being exchanged between each person as they watched intently on what was happening.

"No, no, no. Wait, wait!" the angel shouted in annoyance. She had allowed herself to become distracted, and in that brief moment, the demon had used this opportunity to flee before she could properly bind him.

The smoke traveled to the angel, wrapping around her neck as if it was attempting to strangle her.

" ||𝙹⚍ ∴╎ꖎꖎ リ𝙹ℸ ̣ ∴╎リ "

The angel's eyes glowed white as she began to speak in a strange and foreign tongue. The glow between the two of them intensified; a bright white glow emitting from the angel, and a dark red glow emitting from the smoke.

The two glowing auras seemed to battle each other for dominance until the two of them were blasted apart from the other.

As the angel was flung against the church walls, the smoky mist flew out of the church doors in a rapid dash to escape.

Trinity began coughing and gasping for air. Everyone rushed over to help her, and Father Kiran did his best to keep everyone at bay. "Give her some space! Don't crowd her!" he shouted at everyone, but they were all too curious to truly listen.

Trinity sat up slowly, and supporting her body with one arm placed behind her, she surveyed her surroundings but her eyes appeared dazed and almost in a trance. Her eyes fell upon the angel who was still flung against the wall.

Without delay, she quickly thrust her palm up in the air and began chanting.

" ᒲᔑ|| リ𝙹 ⊣𝙹↸ꖎ|| 𝙹∷ ᔑリ⊣ᒷꖎ╎ᓵ ʖᒷ╎リ⊣ ⍑ᒷᔑ∷ ℸ ̣ ⍑ᒷᓭᒷ ∴𝙹∷↸ᓭ "

Trinity's voice echoed as she spoke each strange word. The onlookers noticed that it sounded strangely similar to the language that the demon had been speaking earlier.

The angel's eyes went wide upon hearing the chant. She quickly jumped up to race back over to the altar. "No! Don't do it!" she shouted with anger in her voice.

Trinity sat up straight in a bolt of lightning. With her right hand still held high, she glanced at the angel and spoke another single strange syllable.

" ᒷリℸ ̣ ∷ᔑ!¡ᒲᒷリℸ ̣ "

Again her voice echoed as she spoke, and holding her left palm towards the angel, a powerful force knocked the angel back against the wall again.

The angel struggled against the force, but could do nothing against the pressure that was pinning her.

Once more, Trinity stared up above as she resumed chanting once again.

"╎ ∴╎ꖎꖎ╎リ⊣ꖎ|| ʖ╎リ↸ ᒲ|| ꖎ╎⎓ᒷ ℸ ̣ 𝙹 ℸ ̣ ⍑╎ᓭ ↸ᒷᒲ𝙹リ

As a spark of red light began to appear in the palm of her hand, she cupped her hand around the source of the light and thrust it in the direction of the church doors.

Unbeknownst by all in attendance, the demon had once again returned, but this time in the flesh rather than the wispy smoke.

The beam of light that Trinity shot out from her palm hit the demon square in the chest, enveloping his whole body. The demon stretched out his wings and held his hands up high in the air as he welcomed the energy that was flowing into him. His whole body seemed to glow with a dark power.

As the glow began to diminish, a devilish grin spread across his face. He reached out a clawed hand and pointing at Trinity, he uttered a single word.

" ᓭꖎᒷᒷ!¡ "

Immediately Trinity collapsed on the altar as she passed out.

The demon took a quick turn on his heels, and with his tail swishing excitedly against the floor, he leapt into the air in a burst of strength and took off flying into the sky.

As the force field that was pinning the angel against the wall began to disappear due to Trinity collapsing, she took a small step as her head hung low in defeat. "I failed," she whispered softly.
