It's 9:30 in the morning and I'm only an hour into my workday when my partner Detective Josiah Fisher, walked into my office. Joe is 26 with short, neat blonde hair and light green eyes; he's muscular with strong arms, a stocky torso, muscular legs, ta skin, and stands at 6'1. I looked up at him.
"We need to get going."
Joe said seriously.
"What's wrong?"
"We got a call, a couple found dead in bed completely drained of blood."
I instantly stood up.
"Go ahead and pull the car around. I need to grab a few things; I'll meet you out there."
I said as I grabbed my bag. Joe nodded as he left. I grabbed my notes, camera, evidence bags and robes, gloves, etc. I walked out, put my bag in the trunk before sliding into the passenger seat, and headed out to the address where we are to meet the forensic team.
As soon as we arrived on scene Officer Elmore Nye led us through the house and up to the master bedroom. More is 45 with short frizzy blonde hair and stern blue eyes; he's wide-bodied and stands at 5'8. When we got to the master bedroom we were met with an all too familiar scene; officers taking pictures, dusting for prints around key points within and around the room. Kayla Cott and Harvey Macklin, two of the most skilled scientists in the field were collecting and analyzing the victims as they lie, swabbing for possible DNA and any other residue around the two puncture marks on each of their necks.
"What do we got?"
I asked. Kayla, the head of our forensic team looked up at us. Kay is 30 with butt-length fine slick golden blonde hair that's tied up neatly in a braid and stern yet soft hazel eyes; she's thin and 5'7.
"The usual; a husband and wife found dead in bed, laying on their backs with their head either twisted to the side or facing the ceiling. Seemingly no obvious cause of death. Two puncture marks on the carotid artery with very little if any blood on the outside, as well as little to no blood within their body."
She explained simply.
"Anything new?"
Joe asked.
"Actually, there is,"
She started as she moved away from the husband to the wife. She gently lifted her hand from under the blanket to reveal blood on and under the woman's nails.
"You know how we assumed the victims are drugged somehow so there's not a struggle."
Me and Joe nodded before she continued.
"Not this time. It seems that she either wasn't given enough or it wore off quicker and she was able to scratch her attacker and even draw blood before being subdued and falling victim. Also, the window was found open, unlike the other house who all had their windows locked and closed."
That's definitely different. I thought as I wrote everything into my "Vampire" case journal; the journal that I have designated solely to this case, and it's only called "vampire" because the media has dubbed him the real-life vampire.
"Anything else?"
I asked.
"Unfortunately not."
She said disappointed. I sighed as I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration.
"Ok, well… just, just get back to me as soon as the DNA of the blood comes back."
Kay nodded before turning around and getting back to work as me and Joe headed back to the KTPD. Once we got back I grabbed my things and immediately walked into my office, shutting the door behind me. I went to my desk and heavily sat down in my black leather chair with a heavy sigh, slouching as far as I could, my head resting on my hand as a massive headache began to sit in.
I have never been this frustrated by a case, ever. Just as I closed my eyes a light knock sounded on my office door. I slowly opened my eyes as Joe walked in.
"Hey."
He greeted with a warm smile.
"Hey."
I said tiredly back.
"How you doing?"
I let out a loud exaggerated sigh. Joe chuckled lightly.
"That bad huh?"
He asked, chuckling lightly. I just gave him 'the look' causing him to stop and put his hands up.
"Tell you what, let me take you to lunch and you can rant all you want, how does that sound?"
I smiled as I sat up and opened my left middle desk drawer and popped two Tylenol into my mouth, no water needed.
"Fine, but you're buying."
I said as I got up. Joe chuckled.
"Naturally."
~~~~~~~~
We just got back to the station when Olive Grenville walked over to us. Olive is a 30-year-old detective with long lank red hair and beddy light green eyes; she's of average build and is 5'5, so still taller than me.
"Detective Grenville, what do you need?"
I asked, addressing her with respect instead of casually like how most of us address each other.
"Alice Smith, today's victim's daughter is here to speak with you."
I nodded.
"Thank you very much for letting me know."
She nodded as she walked away. Joe put his hand on my shoulder.
"Do you want me to take care of this one?"
He asked tentatively. I sighed, shaking my head.
"No, it's fine. I think it'd be best if I spoke with her. Another female and someone who knows the case better than the back of her own hand would be best."
I said looking to the interview rooms already feeling her pain.
"Just take my food and put it on my desk for me would yah?"
I asked.
"Of course."
I handed Joe my food as I headed to the interrogation room where Miss. Smith is waiting. I hope she's not a sobbing mess like most of the others, I just don't have the brainpower at the moment.
Two hours later and finally I was done talking with Miss. Smith. TWO. FUCKING. HOURS!! And now that I'm done with her I have a stack of paperwork to fill out and file. I opened my office door as I felt a slight breeze. I looked to my window to see it open. Hum, Joe must have opened it thinking that it must have been a bit stuffy and to let the nice summer air in. I'll have to thank him later. Deciding to leave it open I went to my desk to see my to-go box sitting on top. I moved my food to the side to notice a note underneath it. I didn't recognize the handwriting, it read:
"7108 Lawford Rd Knoxville. 10:45 p.m... See you soon detective ~K.D."
Confused I quickly pulled out my laptop and looked up the address. The house belonged to Mr. Adam Thomas and Mrs. Amy Thomas, a recently married couple. I quickly pulled up a list of the "vampire's" victims and their connections. My eyes widened. All their times of death are estimated to be around 10:45 p.m. This has to be him. I may have a chance to not only see his face and possibly save these two, and maybe even take him down! I quickly wrote down the address on a sticky note. Just to be on the safe side I put the note under my journal in my center drawer. If this is a trap, Josiah will know exactly where to look.
When my shift ended at 8:30 p.m. I heard directly home. I need to shower, change, arm myself, and to prepare for whoever I may face. I need to be ready so there's nothing that can stop me from finding out the truth behind this case.
