Chereads / The Undead Detective / Chapter 6 - Chapter 5

Chapter 6 - Chapter 5

It was Saturday morning when me and Ken awoke to not one but both of our phones ringing. We both grounded as I grabbed mine and he grabbed his. I looked to see that my little sister Sona was calling before I looked at the time to see it was 10:30 am.

"Hello."

I said groggily. I really just want to go back to bed with me in Ken's arms.

"You still coming to lunch right?"

Sona asked, her chipper voice coming through the other end.

"Yeah, of course. Why would I miss the chance to see my sisters?"

"We're your only sisters."

She giggled.

"Exactly."

"Now, you better be up, it's a great morning!"

"Yah yah, I'm up."

"Good."

"Bye Sona."

"Bye."

I hung up just as Ken walked back into the bedroom, nothing but a pair of grey sweat pants. Holly damn, how am I just now noticing that he has a fucking 8-pack!? I quickly looked away from his chest and to his face to notice that he had a sad look in his eyes.

"What's wrong?"

I asked. Kendal sighed.

"I'm going to have to head to the airport in about an hour. So, unfortunately, I'm going to have to leave you for a few days."

"Well, you said I'd have bodyguards right?"

"That is correct."

"When will they be here?"

"In about 15 minutes."

"Ok, they'll be here soon and I have your number. Everything will be fine."

I reassured as I stood up on the bed so I could reach to plant a soft kiss on his cheek. Even standing on my bed I still had to get on top of tiptoes and pull him a bit closer to me so I could. Why does it have to be soo difficult to give him my love!!!

"Now, we need to get dressed."

I said getting down from the bed. I grabbed my clothes and headed into the bathroom to get ready.

As I walked into the kitchen a knock sounded at my door. Kendal opened the door and in walked five vampires, three women and two men. As soon as the door closed behind them and entered the living room they all bowed or curtsied to Kendal and I.

"Good morning Your Majesties."

They said in unison.

"Addi, come meet everyone."

Ken said as I grabbed one of my juice boxes before walking to his side.

"This is Sir Blyth, your first protector."

Foster has short frizzy brown hair and knowing dark brown eyes; he's muscular and stands at 6'0.

"Next, is Sir Chester Oakley."

Chester has short fine deep brunette hair and friendly dark brown eyes; he's muscular and 5'11.

"Your final protector is Baroness Rosemary Whitby."

Rosemary has long fine brown hair and stern grey eyes; she's semi-muscular and is 5'8. Ok, if these three are to be my protectors then who are these other two women?

"Finally, these two are your personal maids, Hilda Wright and Paula Knight."

Well, there's my answer. Hilda has medium-length curly black hair and soft hazel eyes; she's thin and 5'6. Paula looked to be the youngest of the two with short curly dark brown hair and meaningful grey eyes; she's thin and 5'6. I turned to Ken confused.

"Why would I need a maid, much less two?"

I asked.

"One will help you with cleaning the house or go run errands for you, while the other will stay with you and your guards in case you need anything. Think of them not as maids but as a personal assistant to help you with small chores or anything else, leaving you with more free time and more time to work on your cases."

I nodded before turning to the five vampires as I gave them a warm smile.

"It's very nice to meet you all. I look forward to and am thankful to you being my protectors and my servants."

In response to my kid and warm greeting, their eyes all seemed to sparkle. Ken turned back to me.

"Now, I must get going. I'll be back Monday morning."

Ken said as he kissed the top of my head. I smiled as he turned to the five.

"You protect your Queen with your life, else you'll have to deal with me personally."

He threatened. Though none of them seemed the least bit scared, instead, their eyes seemed to glow with determination as they all bowed.

"Yes, my King."

They said in perfect unison once again.

It was 1 o'clock and time for me to get along. Paula is staying here while Foster, Cheser, Rose, and Hilda will follow me at a decent distance and sit at a table just close where they can watch me and to ensure my safety.

I pulled into Chilli's and walked in to see Kelsey and Sona sitting at a booth waiting for me. Kelsey is 29 and our town mayor. Kel has long wavy black hair and prominent brown eyes; she's thin with weak arms, gentle hands, a wiry torso, straight hips, spindly legs, cream skin, and is 5'5. Sona is 21 and is currently a college student studying to become a middle school history teacher and still living in our parents' basement. Sona has short straight black hair and rounded brown eyes; she's thin with her right nostril pierced, short arms, slender hands, slender torso, large breasts, a well-defined waist, long legs, tan skin, and 5'6. So, both of my sisters are still taller than me.

As the others were seated I headed over to my sisters. The first to notice me was Sona who immediately put her menu down.

"Finally, we thought you'd never show!"

Sona exclaimed dramatically. I rolled my eyes at her as Kelsey chuckled.

"It's only 1:25, and you two told me to be here at 1:30. Soo, joke's on you, I'm early."

I said as I sat down and began looking over the menu. A few minutes later our waitress came over to take our orders. Once she left taking our menus with her, Kel leaned forward as she put her elbows on the table and her chin resting on her hands as she gave me a knowing look, Sona matching her poster and expression. I looked at them confused as I took a sip of my soda.

"What?"

I asked suspiciously, looking back-and-forth between the two of them.

"We know."

Sona said knowingly.

"You know what?"

I asked, getting more and more confused.

"We know your secret."

When Kel said those few words I began to panic a bit. I glanced to my guards to see them listening. Rose looked to me and shook her head as she whispered only just loud enough for my sensitive ears to hear.

"Relax, I don't think they know. If they did they wouldn't tell you in public like this, besides, His Majesty would have been aware if they knew by now."

Her words did calm me, but I was still a bit on edge. I turned back to my sisters.

"What secret?"

Kel only smirked.

"That you have a possible love interest with your new 'personal civilian consultant'."

My heart began to pound harder, but not from nerves, but from embarrassment at what she was implying as a light pink was dusted on my cheeks.

"Oh my God! She totally does!"

Sona yelled excitedly, completely forgetting that we're in a restaurant.

"What?! No, I don't!"

I exclaimed as my face flushed from pink to red.

"Don't lie to us. I saw his car at your place for the past couple of days. I had people check."

Kel said, in a matter-of-fact tone. Great, so my sister is abusing her power and stalking me now.

"Besides, I hear he's drop-dead gorgeous, I'd hit that any night."

As soon as the thought of Kel touching or being anywhere near Ken I became angry. I bit back a threatening hiss as I dug my nails into my hand, bleeding a bit.

"Your Majesty, put your head down, your eyes are threatening to turn red."

I heard Chester whisper to me. I quickly put my head down as I took deep calming breaths, I needed to calm down. Kel chucked.

"Relax Addi, I'm not going to touch your man and I'm by no means going to reprimand you for having a relationship with Kendal Denbow, you're a grown woman and capable of making your own decisions."

My head shot up, feeling much calmer now.

"Wait, how do you know his name? I know you said you had people see his car outside my house, but I never told you his name, nor the fact that he's my personal consultant."

Kel's eyes slightly widened as Sona smirked.

"Oops, busted."

Sona said in a sing-song voice. That's when I put two-and-two together. I should have known.

"I'm going to kill Juli the second that I see her."

Kel started chuckling.

"Looks like Juli now owes Joe $50."

I raised my eyebrows at her. That's when our waitress returned with our food, Sona digging in right way.

"Why?"

"Joe and Juli had a bet going."

Kel said simply.

"What was the bet?"

I asked. Sona looked up from her food.

"Joe bet Juli that you would find out that she told us about Kendal, but Juli bet that you wouldn't."

Sona said with her mouth full. Sometimes I really wonder if she's really 21 and not an 8-year-old in an adult body. Well, at least she'll fit in with the middle school children.

I only nodded. Yep, I'm going to kill her.

For the rest of the time, we all just caught up on what's going on in each other's lives. Sona is planning to continue to live with Mom and Dad while she finishes school. Kel being Mayor her schedule of course is full of boring politician stuff while she continues to prepare for her reelection in September, and on top of everything, they're still single. I didn't use the term mate when talking about him, but if I'm Ken's soul mate then I guess I'm not single. Although, I did have to throw them under the bus, cause once Mom and Dad find out they'll set up a family dinner to meet Ken and to throw Kelsey and Sona under the bus too for being single. Especially Kel, as she's the oldest and almost 30 and still not married.

When I got home the entire house was practically shining with how clean it was. Damn, Paula did a really good job, I'll have to thank her later.

After my shower, I was dressed in my p.js when my phone rang. It was my long-time best friend Minnie. I haven't seen her in about two weeks due to her grandfather getting sick and her wanting to spend some time with him and her family that lives in Canada.

"Hey, what's up?"

I asked as I answered my phone.

"Hey, are you free right now?"

"Yes, why?"

"Well, I just got back and I'm dying to see my best friend."

I chuckled.

"Where do you want to go?"

"How about the club?"

"Of course."

I said rolling my eyes.

"What? Clubs are fun!"

"But you work at one."

"No, I work at a bar."

"Same thing."

"No! Not the same thing!"

"They both serve alcohol, both have people dancing, and everyone basically dresses the same."

"Ok, fair point. But I still want to go!"

"Ok, what time?"

"6 pm."

"Ok, I'll see you then."

"See you soon!"

She then hung up. I turned to see my three guards looking at me.

"What?"

"I don't think His Majesty would approve of you going to a club."

Foster said.

"I'll be fine. Not only am I a cop, but you three will be there and I'll also be with Minnie. So, I'll be protected on all fronts."

The three of them exchanged looks before looking back to me.

"Very well Your Majesty."

Chester said defeated.

It's already 4:30 pm so I didn't have much time to get ready. I found a long sleeve backless black knee-length dress with a plunging V-neck that was tight at my bodice but loosed up as it flowed down. I curled my usually straight black hair and left my makeup to a light natural look and put on black strappy heels. I grabbed my thigh strap and my pistol, I went to load it before Chester handed me a fully loaded magazine.

"Here."

I took the magazine from him and noticed that the bullets looked odd.

"Black iron. The only metal that can actually harm or at least weaken a vampire of high power and kill the weaker and lower-class ones. Just in case."

I nodded my thanks as I put the loaded magazine into my gun.

"Just as effective when dealing with humans."

I commented. I pulled up my dress just high enough, causing the boys to look away as I strapped my gun to my thigh. I was ready.

Rose rode in my car with me while the boys rode in a car behind us. Rose looked to me.

"Now, a couple of things you need to know. You have almost fully awakened, due to being not only changed by the King but also being his mate, any vampire in the club will be able to sense you the moment we pull up. They will acknowledge you with eye contact and then a head nod. Once you feel their eyes, look around you, make eye contact with a few, nod your head, and continue. This'll show your people that you see and acknowledge them. So, no need to be nervous."

She explained. I nodded as I smiled, appreciating her advice.

When we got there it was packed, just like every Saturday night. Foster walked in first with Chester. Once I walked in with Rose behind me. Once I walked in I felt the eyes of all the vampires amongst the humans. I looked around to see at least 25 vampires who all bowed their heads to me once eye contact was made. Following Rose's advice, I nodded my head and continued on after making eye contact with nearly all of them. That's when my eyes locked with a pair of shocked familiar eyes, Minnie.

Minn, my best friend has short curly brunette hair styled in her usual bun and large dark brown eyes; she's thin and semi-muscular with long arms, a powerful torso, defined muscles, strong legs, white skin, and is 5'6. My eyes widened to match her shocked expression when I sensed she had the feel of both human and vampire coming from her. I immediately walked over to her. I was about to speak but she beat me to it.

"When the fuck were you turned?! And why the fuck do you smell like the fucking King?!"

She questioned astonishedly, just loud enough to cut through the pounding music and to my ears only.

"First, why do I scene both human and vampire? And why didn't you tell me?"

I enquired as I sat down on the stool next to her.

"Oh, I'm half. Also, according to the law, we're only allowed to tell our close and direct human relatives and our mate/significant other. Now, spill."

I chuckled.

"Ok, do you know that 15-year-old case I've been working on?"

"Yeah."

She said a bit unsure as to where I was going with this.

"Well, I found out who the perp was."

"And who was it?"

"Kendal."

Her eyes widened when the King's name flowed so freely over my lips.

"The King?! Really?!"

"Yep, he led me to him and he turned me right away. He's how my 'personal civilian consultant'."

"Ok, but that doesn't explain when this happened or why his scent is all over you."

"I was turned about four days ago and apparently I'm his mate."

This caused her eyes to widen even more.

"Holy shit, my best friend is going to be the Queen."

She said to herself causing me to crack up laughing.

"So, Your Majesty, where is your Greek God of a mate now?"

She said once I stopped laughing. I chuckled.

"He said that he had some business to take care of in the U.S. Vampire Capital. That's why Foster, Chester, and Rosemary are here with me."

"When is he supposed to be back?"

"Sunday night or Monday morning."

Minn smirked.

"I bet you miss him hu?"

I ground as I practically slammed my head on the bar table as she laughed.

"You have noo idea! I never knew I could miss someone this much!"

I threw my head up.

"And he only left this morning!!"

I exclaimed before throwing my head back down. Minn chuckled as she patted my shoulder.

"Sounds like you need a drink."

She said as she called over the bartender.

"Can't."

I mumbled before flitting my head once again.

"Why?"

"We finally got a lead on the missing girl that we've been looking for, and tomorrow morning me and a team are being sent out to investigate."

Minn nodded.

"Here then, something a bit more energizing to help you tomorrow."

When one of the bartenders reached us, our eyes made contact as he bowed his head to me, I nodded back.

"Our gorgeous Queen here is not only tired and a tab bit stressed, but has an early start tomorrow. She needs the rare goodness golden stuff."

I gave her a concerning look as the bartender nodded before going to the back.

"The 'rare goodness golden stuff'? You trying to drug me or something?"

I asked confused.

"God no! The rare golden stuff refers to the rare blood type RH null or golden blood. RH null is known to be the most nutritious kind out there. It's also supposed to help ease stress, tension and promote a good night's rest without feeling tired the next morning."

She explained as the bartender returned with a dark beer bottle. I mouthed my thanks. Before I could take a drink Chester came up and grabbed it. I looked at him confused as he smelt it then took a sip. He nodded before handing it back to me. Minn chuckled.

"King Denbow really did pick his top three knights just for you."

I lightly chuckled.

"Definitely most dedicated."

I smelt the blood within the bottle and it smelt amazing, and it tasted even better. Looks like my favorite so far is golden blood.

I had one more bottle before, catching up with Minn for about an hour or two before it was finally time to go home. Once back I took a quick shower and went straight to bed. Unfortunately, though, it wasn't as easy as it sounded. It was surprisingly difficult without Kendal's arms wrapped around me, but eventually, sleep did come.
