"Doug, we have a problem! The police are onto us. We need to go." The man on the other side said in panic and soon the loud blaring sound of the police was heard.
"Shit!" Douglas cursed. He looked at Charlotte whose smile was taunting him. Soon the line on the other side was cut off and in a fit of anger Douglas threw the phone on the floor. It shattered in many pieces.
"Let me guess. The police are here." Charlotte said as a bit of hope ignited in her heart.
Douglas crumbled onto his knee. He clutched his head and screamed. "Why don't you love me? Why? I loved you with everything. I never cheated. I never hurt you and always pampered you. I remembered everything about you. Everything! All I wanted was your love back. Why couldn't you see that?!!" Douglas crawled towards Charlotte. His eyes glazed a white mist as he began crying. His pent up emotions that was driving him to insanity poured out at last.
"I loved you once Doug, I really did. But you're insane. Your love wasn't pure. It had become an obsession and I felt trapped and suffocated in that relationship." Charlotte wept. "I cried myself to sleep every night because I was scared of you. You were petrifying. Every time I tried breaking things up with you would just snap and threaten to kill yourself if I don't do as you say. Doug, my love for you turned into fear and every moment we were together I was stepping further towards depression. Because of you I had to hide from the world. Even though I knew you were behind bars, I felt uneasy. I felt like you would find me wherever I am if I showed the world my face. Everyday Doug. Everyday I lived in fear."
Charlotte realised she could never deny her past because she once did love Douglas with everything but then their love became toxic. It was better for them to part ways. After years of trauma, after finally being in a healthy relationship, she realised what she needed. That was closure. She had to tell Douglasfor once and forever that she was over him. She had to tell him that they could never be together because it was killing the both of them.
Douglas felt his nose turn sour as he heard Charlotte's confession. He thought she was happy. He thought that the reason she was running away from him was because she didn't want him anymore. He thought that she didn't love him.
"I-I di–" Douglas choked on his tears. He felt like someone had gotten a knife and plunged it in his heart. He was the biggest hypocrite. He said he never hurt her but what is he doing now? He kidnapped and hurt her with his own two hands. He said he loved her but he hit her. He was the beginning and end of her pain. He did this to himself.
"I'm s-sorry, Charlotte. I-I don't know what to say."
As the sincere words of Douglas left his mouth, the police broke open the door. From then on everything was a blur to Charlotte. She heard the police rush in and detain Douglas while she also heard the familiar voices of her loved ones. When she felt the warm embrace of Elliot, Charlotte dazedly stared at him. She caressed his cheeks and said, "You're here finally."
Elliot had tears in his eyes. He held Charlotte as she slowly closed her eyes and muttered under her breath. "I love you Elliot. With you here beside me, I can finally rest."
Elliots voice was choked but he nodded with his head. Alexa soon came rushing in with her father. After seeing Charlotte safe they both exhaled. They took Douglas to the police station for interrogation and searched the place for any other accomplices. After finding a group of thugs hiding, they then arrested them too. Everything took place in less than thirty minutes. It already took two days to Charlotte, they didn't want to waste another second.
Charlotte was transported to the hospital. Elliot not once did he leave her side. He refused to let her hand go. After her superficial wounds were cleaned and treated she was transferred to a VIP ward. For three days straight there was no sign of Charlotte waking up, that's when everyone got nervous.
