Chapter 13 - Manager

Ruan was in his room on top of his singular bed that couldn't be any more basic. He put his hand on the back of his head as he scrolled through his special phone. He was watching the daily shop that reset every midnight.

Health Potion: 100 LP

Stamina Potion: 50 LP

Endurance Potion: 50 LP

Ruan smirked as he watched the list of the daily shop on his phone. With his current life point, he couldn't even afford the cheapest of the three. He sighed as he watched the number on the top right corner.

"35 points and that five points was from talking with a fish, sigh."

He put away the phone before stared blankly at the ceiling. The beautiful face came into his mind once again. Those freckles and that innocent blush were etched in his heart. Unbeknownst to him that his own face was turning a red hue. There was something cute about how she expressed herself, "Rue..."

He furrowed his eyebrows before he opened a browser from his other phone. He typed in her name before he pressed enter. The result from his search was not specific enough and the name Rue came out with more than a hundred thousand results. His eyebrows twitched before he added in her occupation beside her name on the search bar.

Her photo came out with her profiles underneath. There was her height, her age, and everything else except her weight, somehow. Ruan was curious of course, he went in the page without thinking much further.

She was twenty-two, just graduated from the university with an astounding cumulative GPA. She got a full scholarship from the said university and had won a lot of media-related competitions. Not only her brain, but her looks also played a huge part in her life. She was the winner of a beauty pageant in her university and it only took her less than four years of study to graduate. She was aspired to be a journalist thus why she took a job as a reporter.

"Wow, she is wondrous," said Ruan. When he compared himself to her it was like night and day, except that he was the only dusk part.

"Hmm, but the article didn't mention her sickness?" muttered Ruan before he rubbed his chin, "Pretty sure that was not a heart attack, maybe, or maybe it is, I'm not a doctor," he shrugged.

Suddenly his phone rang as Luke's photo appeared right in front of his face. His thumb was about to press the decline button on the screen before he halted. He gulped as he thought (Damn, I'm really that introverted am I? The first thing I want to do is to decline the call).

He pressed his lips together as he let the tune played for a while before he pressed the answer button and put the phone on his ear.

"Yo, YO!!!!" Luke shouted.

Ruan instantly furrowed his eyebrows before he put away the phone and only now did he realize that it was a video call instead. He saw Luke laughing his ass off. It looked like he was in his room based on the background that he was very familiar with.

"Fuck you," said Ruan while raising his eyebrows twice only to get another laugh from Luke.

"So, what's up?" asked Ruan.

Luke hold his hand in front of the camera before he coughed, "hah, right, since the convenience store got robbed, it was actually booming yesterday with lots of customers."

Ruan raised his eyebrows, "Really? Won't a convenience store getting robbed would bring a negative impact?"

Luke shook his head, "Almost, man, almost got robbed, we stopped the act remember?"

"Well, technically yes but it is still quite dangerous don't you think?"

"I don't know man, since the failed robbery, the convenience got a lot of attention from the local media. However, there was one thing that ticked me off the most though."

"What's that?"

"Wait, let me sent you a link."

The URL was sent through the chat room between him and Luke. He opened the page before a video immediately played.

It was his manager, the one who never showed up inside the convenience store. His fat potbelly could seriously challenge the buttons on his shirt. His bald and thin eyes really looked sketchy. He seemed to be one of those people that women tended to avoid. He was sweating in the video as a reporter from the local news interviewed him.

(Hmm, I'm glad the reporter is not Rue thought Ruan as he saw the male reporter.

"So, Mr. Cuk?"

"No! It's Couk! With an 'u'," said the manager as he wiped the sweat on his forehead with his napkin.

The reporter had black lines over his head as he thought (You mean an 'o').

"I'm sorry, Mr. Couk? (God it sounded the same in the end!) Are you the manager of the convenience store behind us?" asked the reporter.

The manager nodded, "Yes that is correct, I'm also the supervisor for it."

The reporter nodded with the cameraman as they thought (Yeah, that's uh, that's what manager do though).

*ehem

"Yes, indeed, Mr. Couk, can you tell us more about the two brave youngsters that worked here?"

The manager sighed as he shook his head, "They are really brave souls indeed, I taught them well to be good employees but they always keep making mistakes, but finally, they managed to do what is right. Sometimes I hope that they keep the convenience store clean and spotless but I guess it was too hard for them."

"Ye—"

"Furthermore, they keep slacking off, and I always have to cover their shift almost all the time, but at the end of the day they are young, so I understand the fire of adventure in their heart. For I too was once young, well I am still though. Have a stable job and single a—"

"Okay, we are going to take a break," said the reporter before he made a 'cutting neck' motion to his cameramen to stop the stream.

Ruan blinked twice before Luke said, "See?! That lying pig dare to insult us and shamelessly branding himself!"

Unbeknownst to Ruan, his father downstairs was also watching the same stream.

"Hoo~,"

Suan Tey locked the screen of his phone before the dark reflection of it revealed his grin.
