Chapter 4 - chapter 4

Footsteps sounded nearby, Violet's head strained to look at the approaching stranger.

Her instincts heightened and she had the sudden need to bite-for release, it was like this pent up anger surfaced into a violent volcano about to erupt, she didn't know where it had come from, all she knew was that she needed a fight and this stranger, with it's strange aura was as good as anyone.

The moon, that was no where to be seen before was now visible and shone rays of pure white light down upon the stranger, as if welcoming the thing, as if greeting it with a hug as it wrapped its mesmerising light around it. Violet could now see the stranger, but it's face was obscured with the shadows of its hood.

Violet pulled on the chains holding her down, she thrashed willing strength into each tug, but it was no use, the attempt was futile and only caused her to feel even more tired.

The stranger smiled down at Violet and her blood seemed to recoil and pool in her middle, she was going to be sick.

The stranger continued to walk towards Violet, the rays of white light followed it like a spotlight, as if it was the lead dancer in a ballet performance, each move precise and controlled, each movement thought out with deadly care, each step drawing it closer to the finale. The stranger stopped, not even a meter away, it removed its hood and Violet had to blink at the sheer beauty of it-of her.

The anger was little more than a wisp of smoke in Violets veins as she took in the strangers face, it had taken a backseat and now surprise took over, she was stunned at how beautiful someone could be, how perfect-as if the gods themselves crafted her with their hands. But the wicked smile seemed to twist her face into harsh cruelty, and Violet knew that she might not be breathing for much longer.

The stranger spat, and that cruel smile twisted even further, when she spoke her voice was like liquid night, "what are you doing in my territory?"

Violet cringed, "I-I don't know, I became lost."

The stranger laughed, "don't play stupid with me girl" she pointed a finger at Violet, "all of you disgusting blood suckers know to stay well away from my territory" she spat again, "now tell me why you are in my territory."

"what do you mean? There's more here?" Violet whispered.

The stranger rolled her eyes and said exasperatedly, "yes" She growled deep, "now answer my question or you will find yourself without a tounge"

Violet gulped, "I swear I don't know; I was out hunting, and I became lost"

The stranger smiled sweetly, but it curdled as she spoke, "so your new around here, well, well, well..." the stranger drifted off as if contemplating something.

"how did you get here" she said, her voice darker than the twinkling night above.

"well I-umm..." she swallowed, "I ran away from my family."

The stranger looked surprised, "you ran away?" then her face changed into dark amusement, "what, did you rebel because they treated you as the runt and didn't give you your fair share of blood?" she pouted, "such a shame."

Violet mumbled, "no, that's not it."

The stranger stepped closer, "talk up now girl, I can't hear you if you mumble" Violet had the sense that the stranger was just toying with her.

Violet sighed, "I didn't rebel, I was shunned and hated, my family had cast me aside because I was different so I thought it would be best if I just...disappeared."

Silent tears slipped down Violet's cheeks, they twinkled and sparkled like diamonds as they caught the light. She looked away, hoping with the shift of her head her hair could obscure her face.

There was such a silence, as if even the wind had quietened to hear the strangers next words, "I'm sorry to hear that" the stranger said softly, "I know how that feels."

Violet jerked her head up to look at the stranger, her brown silky mass of hair covered her face, her shoulders slumped, and her fingers clenched and unclenched at her side. The stranger looked up and there was a dark fire in her brown eyes, "did you choose this?" she said quietly.

Violet shook her head unable to speak, knowing her voice would be shaky with the tears she was trying to hold back.

That terrifying day assaulted her, it came back again and again and again, a never ending night mare, the day played out in her mind and the forest drifted away.

Violet's steps on the ground was the only thing heard apart from the occasional car passing by, it was dark, and Violet strained to even see a meter ahead, she had her headphones on, blasting 'brick by boring brick' by Paramore.

Her hair wiped in the wind and it momentarily blinded her, she stumbled and fell, grazing her knees and palms causing blood to drip and pool on the ground, she hissed, "damn it!"

with her hair still obscuring her vision she didn't hear or see the car speeding towards her like a raging bull.

When she finally looked up as the blinding headlight came into view, she screamed but it was already too late. The screech of the wheels was the last thing she heard.

Violet's eyes fluttered open, her whole body hurt, she tried to scream but there was only silence and a deafening ache in her head. There were no words in Violet's head, no thoughts as she lay there on the ground unable to feel her legs. Blood gushed from a wound in her head, she began shaking violently as she felt the crimson blood begin to pool around her, making the blood flow faster—she knew she was going to die.

eyes closed, the light of the moon shone down upon her, making the blood that filled the cracks of the cement sparkle. Like little river of crimson. She could feel herself fading away, the little cornel of life that shone in her began to flicker out with each laboured breath she took.

She could feel the moons light upon her eyes, she wanted to open them, to see the moons solemn face one more time before she died, to see the stars glisten like jewels hung by string in the sky.

To die knowing someone was there.

It was then that the moon and stars disappeared—no, they had been blocked by something standing over her. An invisible hand ran its cold fingers along her dying skin. Violet shivered and screamed, the sudden movement of her body sent hot flashes of spearing pain through her body.

She tried to open her eyes, but they were as heavy as lead. Then a disembodied voice as cold as ice spoke, it was filled with mischievousness and cruelty. "Well...well...well...look what the cat dragged in." violet tried to open her eyes again, but death continued to drag her into oblivion. She tried to move. To do anything against the cold finger's death wrapped around her heart, against the voice that dragged icicles along her skin.

Violet opened her mouth, the sound that came out was a pathetic croak. A push of breath past her lips as she tried to speak. "W-who...a-are you?" she questioned, each word more effort than it should have been.

The thing, what ever it was laughed. A hand ran fingers along her cheek, it was as cold as it's voice. "I'm your saviour, darling" violet didn't have the words to speak, not as all the energy drained further from her.

She didn't do anything, couldn't do anything but scream as searing pain ripped through her neck. Through her shoulder and down her arm.

She couldn't think past the pain, the burning that was unending.

She couldn't think. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't do anything as the pain surged like a cresting wave ready to sweep her into oblivion.

She breathed hard, hot breath passing her lips turning to white mist. Her screams were endless but not one heard or investigated. If they had they would already have found the alley empty. A spider web of crimson flowing through the cracks in the cement was the only indicator that something had happened.
