Chapter 53 - Hope Springs Eternal

Paul rode fast and hard while Sorrian tried to keep up behind to catch him. Paul rode away from her quickly, yet she still pursued. Sorrian was without food, water, or proper clothing. She began to grow weak from riding so hard.

As Paul made it to Helorion, he was greeted by Samuel and Rachel. They saw how weak he was, he could barely stand after he got off his horse.

"The assassins attacked Dante and myself. I know Dante could handle them, but one of the assassins followed me."

Rachel then told Paul that word had been sent that Dante was killed. Paul grew weary and collapsed into Rachel, and Samuel became agitated.

"I'm going to find that assassian and kill 'em myself."

"Samuel, be careful. I can't bare to lose you. Please, promise me."

"I promise." Samuel then planted a kiss on Rachel's lips and head off in the direction Paul rode in from.

As Sorrian rode, she couldn't keep her strength, and she collapsed. Her horse stayed by her unconscious body and Samuel came upon them. Samuel saw her and saw she was hurt badly after falling off her horse. He picked her up and fastened her to her horse, then lead them to an abandoned cottage.

The cottage had blood stained sheets, and oddly enough, a place for a wheelchair. Samuel laid Sorrian on the bed and tended to her wounds, keeping as quiet as possible so she could rest. He cooked so when she awoke, she would have something to eat.

"Where am I? Who are are you? Stay back!"

"Jezz, don't bite the hand that feeds. My name is Samuel. I am part of the group that is opposing Ultas and Voron. I assume you are one of the assassins?"

"My name is Sorrian. I'm am sister to Agripian, and friend to Cansoulian. Those damned cowards Ultas and Voron are simply my employers."

"So why do you follow them? Is really just for money?"

"How much of a choice do you think we have? You try fighting against those bastards. They control more than you think."

"Why don't you break free? Save your brother and your friend, join us and fight against Ultas and Voron."

"If it was only that simple."

"I can see the pain in your eyes. You know you want to be free from them. Please, I want to help you."

Sorrian looked down away from Samuel. She knew what he said was more true than anything, but she couldn't bring herself to tell him. Samuel seemed persistent, so she brought him into a passionate kiss.

"I don't want to admit the truth, but your right."

She continued, passionately entanglling herself in Samuel, bringing every pain she hand to the surface and expelling them dramatically.

"Why are going back? Why?"

"If those Iove are to escape the clutches of Ultas and Voron, then I need to be there to help them. I believe in your mission, Samuel."

"So what, did we just fuck for the fun of it?"

"Samuel, there is something in your eyes that comforts my soul. I trust you. So it was more. I hope it was more."

Sorrian gathered her belongings and rode back. Samuel rode away towards Helorion, feeling as though he just saved a soul. As he made it to Helorion, Paul greeted him.

"Did you kill her?"

"No, I never came across her. I found her track and it lead back towards Silverstone."

"Well, we'll have our chance soon enough. I'm not standing by anymore. We will strike soon."

Rachel was uneasy. She knew Samuel had been lying about the assassin, but why would he?

"Samuel, I know you're lying. What happened with the assassin? Why won't you look me in the eye?"

"I... betrayed you. I slept with her. I found her nearly dead and treated her wounds. I connected with her."

"What, she have bigger tits? She suck your cock better?"

"I connected with her soul. It was tormented when I found her. When she left, her soul seemed at peace, and determined."

"What did we have then?"

"You had me."

Rachel couldn't bare to look Samuel in the eye. She felt betrayed, but she knew there was nothing between them. It was physical. Whatever he had with that assassin was spiritual. It was deep.

Rachel was awoken suddenly by Paul and Zeno.

"We are going to Silverstone to kill those bastards ourselves."

"Why are you taking me? Mark is stronger and Samuel is faster."

"They won't kill though. They stand on the high ground, pure of heart and righteous."

"Samuel slept with the damn assassin you sent him to kill!"

"You were the closest to him. He told you the truth. He came by and told me the truth. If we are to fail and die on this quest, Mark and Samuel will be able to beat them. If they went and we stayed, we would surely lose."

"So what happens now?"

"We go stain the throne with blood."
