Chapter 8 - Homecoming

Mia

It was time to head back home.

"Mrs. Hunter, thanks for everything. I got a call from a friend who's starting a new company and wants me to work with her. I want to try a hand at this startup thing too. She's on the other side of the country so I have to quit this job."

"If you are happy with that honey, go for it. Do what your heart desires. I don't know what will an old bird like me do without you, you made me used to yourself young lady."

She hugged me. I hugged her tighter.

Mrs. Hunter became my support system in the past year. She was more like a mother to me than an employer. I was very lucky to meet her.

I remember when my knuckles were red from all the training she used to scold me like a mother.

"I don't understand why are you so hard on yourself young lady. Why do you have to break your bones huh?"

"Mrs. Hunter, I was training yesterday. I have to be hard on myself so I can be strong and I'm not breaking my bones."

"Oh shush, give me your hand you need to apply some ice."

I feel that I should leave them alone. They don't need a liar like me.

"I've told Jenny to help you until you find someone."

"You are so sweet, dear. May God bless you."

She kissed my cheek and let me go.

With the money I had I could survive a few weeks but the rent in the city is quite high. I would have to find a job sooner. I decided before leaving this town I would need a makeover. I can't let anyone recognize me.

I went to the local salon and chopped my hair to my shoulders and dyed them brown.

It would take some time to recognize me like this. I was looking forward to seeing Brian William, after all, I waited for the whole year for him. I can't wait to kill him.

I bought some supplies I would need for the road and I was off to my dear home.

On the way, I decided to take a detour to the cemetery.

There was the grave I was looking for.

Mia Edge

A loving daughter and sister.

1994-2016

How wonderful that I had a grave!

Beside my empty grave, there was another one. I had come here when I came to know my grave was here. I bought an empty casket and dug it right beside mine. I had also buried most of the stuff I had of Melissa with me, like her clothes, her research papers. I kept only kept one of her favorite shirts and this necklace. I used to wear it some nights when the nightmares got intense.

Here lies, Melissa Edge

Kindest soul, a daughter, and the best sister.

1998-2016

I could never forget that there's a piece of my heart forever lost. Melissa didn't deserve to die or anything else that happened to her. I also had to remember that this madness cost Jane and Christina their lives. I knew them. They all had ambitions to become a scientist one day. All three of them loved their studies and research. They had such raw passion in their eyes it amazed me sometimes.

I set one rose on Melissa's grave and sat beside it.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save you. You didn't deserve this. Not at all. I'm sorry that I failed you. Failed you when you needed me the most."

I took a deep breath. I won't cry now. I decided not to grieve Melissa and her friends until I have avenged them.

"Remember my last promise to you?"

I waited a few seconds to compose myself I can't cry in front of her. I've decided not to cry so I won't.

"I promised that I'll take my revenge. I won't break that promise even if I die in the process. I promise you, Melissa."

I stood up.

"I love you, Melissa. I couldn't say it that day but you know I love you right?"

I waited a few more minutes and left.

My hometown looked peaceful. Nothing had changed. I don't know what to expect when I thought of coming here. This wasn't exactly the Gotham City of the DC Universe. The police did good work here. Who am I to judge?

I headed to a real estate agent's office. I need an apartment to stay in. I don't know how long my stay will be.

The agent showed me 3 apartments all under my budget.

I decided to go for this. It was modern and elegant. It was small but it was systematic and was already furnished so wouldn't have to worry about it.

It had off-white colored walls, compact in size but it was the best deal for me in my budget. In the corner of the room was a queen-sized bed. The beddings matched the color of the walls. There were no other walls separating the kitchen, the living, and the bedroom- it was a studio apartment.

The kitchen was right opposite the bed and near the window was an average-sized study desk with a modern lamp. There was a beige-colored medium-sized couch near the desk. The closet was right on the other side of the desk with good storage space. I can hide my weapons in the back.

In total, the apartment had 3 chairs including the desk chair. Plenty of sitting space. A coffee table was placed in front of the couch and the table had small storage space. The windows lead to the small balcony. You can't sit there but it is good for keeping an eye outside. One advantage of this is that the person outside won't be able to see inside the apartment without me not noticing him/her.

"I'll take this one."

"Sure, ma'am. I'll work on the details."

Sleeping in a car is not at all comfortable let me tell you.

"Can you do it quick I wanna move here today itself? "

"I'll work on it."

Two days later I was all set up. Now time for job hunting. I hate this part.

Now I thought for two days and concluded I need a job where Brian and his men won't even think of finding me. A place where I can keep an eye on them without worrying about giving away my location. Also a clean job. A job where I can handle the pressure easily something I have experience in. A place where I can learn new things by myself. A place where I can think. A place where I get a steady income. Plus I love books.

You guessed it correct I'm going for a job in the library.

*The next day.*

"Miss Edge, you are hired. You can join us tomorrow at 9:30 am. Don't be late."

"Thank you, Mr. Smith."

Getting a job here was hard comparatively but I had previous experience working in a library I know how stuff works here so it was a piece of cake for me.

Well now for the plan I'm thinking about this whole time.

I need intel on Brian and his gang to break him apart. I can't exactly hack into the police servers without having a basic knowledge of how they work. I need to know how they work.

Then as I slowly gain some information I can work on it myself and reach Brian when he's the weakest.

For this, I need his gang to disintegrate. I don't know how I'll do that but I need to at least start somewhere.

I can use some pawns.

Time to meet Sergeant  James Miller.
