Mia
It was Saturday morning and I had my day off. I need fresh air so I wore my track pants and a tank top and my jogging shoes.
It was still early for anyone to wake up in cities where most of them are night owls including myself.
I couldn't sleep last night. I was really exhausted but I just can't sleep.
Every time I close my eyes I see Melissa's dead body and I wake up again. I can't see her face anymore.
It was so quiet and peaceful here just the way I liked. It was not chaotic like it was during the whole day and night in the city.
I could hear the birds chirping instead of car horns.
I could feel fresh air caressing my hair instead of smoke coming out of the engines.
The city looked surreal.
I could use this every morning.
I began jogging around the block when I noticed someone was following me. I kept changing my route but that person kept following me.
I suddenly stopped and turned around to punch that person in the face when a hand stopped me.
Sergeant James Miller was stopping my hand with his and had an amused look on his face.
"This is our second meet and you are already going to punch me in the face?" He amused.
"Why are you following me?"
I'm not in the mood for his flirting.
"I saw you jogging and thought I could use a buddy. We could be jogging buddies."
I didn't answer him, I turned around and continued jogging I don't want anything to do with him right now.
"Oh come on sugar, don't be so bitter." He continued jogging beside me.
"First of all, that was so cheesy. Second I'm no one's sugar."
We reached the park and he still wouldn't leave.
I continued my jogging at a leisurely speed. But I could notice he was getting jumpy.
He couldn't control it anymore and said, "Can't you jog a little faster?"
"No one is controlling you, go on."
"I wanna jog with you."
"I don't wanna jog with you."
"You think I can't jog at a caterpillar's speed? I'll prove you wrong."
"I haven't thought any such thing."
"I know you thought about it."
"I didn't."
"At least you are not giving me silent treatment now."
I didn't notice that, man he's good.
I huffed and increased my speed.
"Tell me something about yourself."
"Why should I say anything about myself to you?"
"Because I wanna be your friend."
"I don't wanna be your friend."
"My favorite color is orange what's yours?"
"I don't care about your favorite color."
I again increased my speed. Why is he not going away? I don't want to talk to him.
"You are wearing black right now so your favorite color is black."
"I didn't say that my favorite color is blue. Now go away."
"Blue, like my eyes that's cool. Why did you come here?"
"Should I have asked for your permission to come here, your majesty?"
"I wouldn't mind, but will you say it already."
"This is my hometown and I'm back here."
"Where were you all this time?"
"Stop your interrogation already, I'm not answering any of your questions."
"As you wish, I'll say something about myself. I'm Sergeant James Miller, as you know. I always wanted to be a police officer since I was a child. I have one older sister. Jasmine, she's married to John. My ma and pops stay at their farmhouse, they wanted a quiet retirement life so they shifted there.
I visit there once a year during Christmas. Jasmine comes there too and we have a blast."
"It must be good to have a family. " I whispered.
"Don't you have a family?"
"I did, not anymore."
"Hey, I'm sorry I got you sentimental. Tell me about your favorite shows, have you seen Brooklyn nine-nine?"
"I used to but lately I haven't caught up with many shows and movies."
"That's too bad. Don't worry I'll give you the detailed information. You'll catch up in no time."
He asked me many questions about my hobbies, my studies, my favorite food among other things, and also told me about his.
He seemed a good person. I didn't mind being his friend. It wasn't like anything more would happen if I became his friend. I also dropped the idea of seducing him at that exact moment. It wasn't fair to him. I'll find some other way to reach Brian William.
After a long jog, we sat on a bench. We were just catching our breaths when a teen came rushing towards us. He came near me a lifted his hand towards my neck and snatched something, my necklace! And he ran away.
"You!!! Stop."
But he didn't stop, he was running towards the gate.
I got up and ran behind him. This jog had slowed me down but I wasn't going to let him go that easily.
I huffed, my legs were hurting like a bitch but he has the most precious thing I have.
I followed him for many blocks and blocks and finals closed around him.
It was a dead-end for him. He took a wrong turn and ended up in an alley.
"Stop it now will you?"
"Just leave me alone." He spat at me.
"Give me my thing back."
"I've run enough I need my reward."
"Give it back."
"No."
"You brought this on yourself boy."
I closed the distance between us and punched him in the face.
He stumbled a bit. But regained his stance and hit me back.
I punched him in the stomach. He grunted and hit me on my jaw.
I kicked and punched him continuously and he returned the favor too.
I grunted and got up. I raised my hand to punch him again when a hand stopped mine.
"That's enough."
James said in a very dangerous low voice.
"Leave me alone."
"Mia, look at yourself."
I ignored him and got out of his hold to get my necklace back.
But he grabbed me by my waist and pulled me towards himself.
"Stop it, Mia."
"I said leave me alone."
I struggled in his hold but he was just too strong.
"Give her her necklace."
The boy gave me my necklace and backed away.
"Now leave. If I ever see you doing this again I'm gonna arrest you. This is your only warning. Leave."
The boy stumbled and limped and got out of the alley.
I huffed again.
"What is with you police officers leaving the real criminals behind and questioning the innocent ones?"
"He was just a kid and you already punished him pretty bad. I'm sure he'll not pull up any more stunts like this."
"He took my Melissa and your people helped him. I hate all of you."
I looked at my necklace and tighten my hold on it.
"You all are the same."
"I don't know what you are talking about but you are not in a good shape let me get you home."
He took my arm and gently pulled me.
I jerked my hand back.
"Leave me the hell alone!"
"Mia, let me help you."
"No one can help me."
I turned a little fast as the sudden movement made me dizzy.
I swayed before falling into something warm.
I looked up to see James Miller holding me by my waist.
"Leave me."
I punched his chest but I don't think it was affecting him much. I felt weak.
"What's the matter with you?"
He sat down taking me with him.
"Leave me."
"I won't."
That was the last thing I heard before darkness consumed me.
