Chapter 14 - Searching for clues

Mia

I couldn't sleep no matter how tired I was. I feared that if I had any nightmares and if I would scream the outcome would not be so comfortable.

James was sleeping right outside the room. I can't afford sleep right now even though how tempting his bed looks.

I sit on the bed and pick the book I was reading earlier.

I was engulfed in the pleasant masculine scent of James. It was a wonderful feeling.

No Mia, don't think about it.

It's not wonderful, it's awful very very awful.

Why are you lying to yourself, Mia?

My inner voices should shut up for a while I think.

These comforters were very very comfortable for my liking. Filled with James's scent, it smelt woodsy and something sweet I couldn't put my finger on it but it was so good.

I sat there reading for some hours I was nearly reaching the part where the hero was going to kill his backstabber best friend when a knock on the door startled me.

I gasped in fear. What was that?

There was a louder knock then.

"Mia, Mia, wake up. I need to come inside." James knocked on the door again a little louder than before.

I got up and put my book on the bedside table and opened the door for him.

"Yeah?"

"Mia, so sorry to disturb you but I gotta go to the precinct now. I just got a call from Ryan."

"Is everything all right?"

"Yeah yeah, everything is fine. I just need to get my uniform."

"Sure." I stepped out to give him privacy.

He returned a few minutes later. He cleared his throat to catch my attention.

He had my attention. My full attention.

I need to stop ogling him. It's getting out of hand.

He looked handsome otherwise but in this uniform, mama mia! Internal chef's kiss.

Mia no!

Mia yes!

The uniform fitted him perfectly. All his muscles, his muscular arms, his wide shoulders, his long legs, and thick thighs and don't get me started on that ass man! He was a freaking delight. Couldn't he wear his uniform all the time? God!

What the bloody hell Mia?

My eyes widen while looking at him and I had no idea I did that.

I ogled him without any shame. I never did that.

"See something you like Mia?"

"Uh."

He was smirking now.

"Mia, I would love it if you ogle me but now I really need to go. Even though I don't want to. Duty calls." He gave me a mock salute.

I turned beet red.

"I'll be back within a few hours, you should take a rest."

I nodded.

He smiled at me and closed the door behind him.

I released the breath I didn't realize I was holding and slumped on the couch.

I needed to get control over myself. This is not acceptable. I have to focus on killing Brian William. I'm not here to fall in love or something. It will only come between me and my plan.

I can't afford this.

I got up with a new resolve and began my search.

Think Mia where would James have any information about criminals?

I know his study and his computer, that's simple. I also need to make sure that I don't leave any trails behind, James is a sergeant after all.

I step inside his room and first search for any files or any other physical evidence.

There are many files but none have any relation with Brian. I would have to hack into his computer now I don't have a choice.

"Of course, it is password protected. Stupid Mia." I grumbled.

What does James love the most?

Three things that I can think of- irritating me, sweets, and his sleep/bed.

I discarded the idea of irritating me, I made an appearance in his life not so long ago.

I typed 'sweets' didn't work. He doesn't love sweets? I was surprised. But didn't he break into Naomi's house to eat cookies?

What if it's a particular dessert he likes? I don't know about that.

Wait a minute, he stole cookies, right?

I typed 'cookies', Nah wrong password.

I typed 'chocolate cake' didn't work.

I typed 'apple pie', nope. I've got one last chance otherwise he'll get notified that someone snooped here and that someone was me considering I was the only person staying here besides him.

Think Mia, please think.

Last option, I typed 'my bed'.

And voila! It worked!

This was a bit predictable, wasn't it?

I searched for anything that could catch my eye.

There was an icon that caught my attention. I clicked it.

Jackpot!

It had every information about the police department. I saw the files, James and his fellow detectives were working on.

I never came to know how was I exactly killed. So curiosity got the best of me and I typed my name in the search bar.

There was my report. How lucky was I that I got to read my own death report and already had my own grave? I don't think any successful person in the world has this privilege. I was really lucky.

I searched Brian William's name and his slate was clean, well duh cops were under his control. Except for one time he was caught selling drugs and he had to pay a hefty fine and was also sentenced to 3 years but apart from that, his record was clean. At least I got a face to hate now.

All this time I hated a man with no face. No one knew how he looked, well I know. He had blond hair, a big scar running across his right cheek and his left eye seemed fake. Maybe a trick of the light? He was huge, a mountain of a man. How do I describe this without being biased? He screamed evil. If you see him run away. That doesn't apply to me, I'm Mia, after all, I always do the opposite of what I've been told to do.

Not finding any other evidence I moved on to searching the club's name. Nothing. Zero zip Nada.

I searched for missing reports of girls aged between 18 to 30. I found a few but I wanted those reports to have any relation with the club or Brian himself.

There were 2 more girls who were reported missing. The last anyone had seen them was them going to the club. But Brian had provided CCTV footage that made his record clean.

The footage showed that they both did leave the club, they were swaying a bit but they managed to go ahead.

I know better than that. Brian William was responsible for this too.

Then a few weeks later they were found dead on the sidewalk, stabbed. The same way they covered for Christina's and Jane's murder.

I had to do a count now. Brian William in total ruined the lives of Melissa, Jane, Christina, and these two girls, Julia and Angela.

I will not let this go. He has to pay. I'll make sure of it.

I didn't realize how hard I'd formed my fists until the nails drew blood out of my palms.

I didn't wince, there is much more pain for me ahead, a little bit of blood can't hurt me.

What was that song?

Yeah,

"Nobody said it was easy..."

Well, easy is overrated, bring on the hard stuff baby.

I cleared my history no trails were left behind.

But I didn't know that James could see it whenever he wanted on his phone. The search history had a backup on his phone.

I came to know that very later...
